TEHRAN, IRAN — The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy has issued a chilling ultimatum to Washington, vowing to launch “heavy assaults” against American military bases and naval assets if Iranian oil tankers or commercial vessels are targeted.

The warning, reported by Iranian state media on Saturday, May 9, 2026, marks a dangerous escalation in the maritime standoff currently paralyzing the Persian Gulf.

“Missiles and Drones Locked On”

In a series of statements broadcast on state TV, the IRGC Navy Command warned that any aggression against Iranian shipping would trigger a massive and immediate response. “Warning! Any aggression against Iran’s oil tankers and commercial vessels will result in a heavy assault against American centres in the region and the enemy’s ships,” the command stated.

Supporting the threat, the IRGC Aerospace Force claimed that its long-range missiles and high-explosive drones have already “locked onto” U.S. targets across the Middle East. “We are awaiting the order to fire,” a separate military update read, indicating that Iranian forces are on high alert.

Escalation in the Gulf

The ultimatum follows a week of violent kinetic exchanges in the strategic waterway:

  • Tanker Strikes: On Friday, May 8, reports emerged that U.S. naval forces disabled two Iranian-flagged oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman, alleging they were attempting to breach a blockade.
  • Casualties: Iranian media reported that at least one sailor was killed and 10 others were injured after one of the vessels caught fire during the encounter.
  • Direct Clashes: On May 7, Iran claimed it retaliated against U.S. Navy destroyers after they allegedly targeted a tanker in Iranian territorial waters—a move the U.S. described as “unprovoked.”

A Tenuous Ceasefire

This latest rhetoric comes just as President Donald Trump announced a temporary pause to “Project Freedom”—a mission to escort commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz. While Trump cited “diplomatic progress,” the U.S. maintains a strict blockade on Iranian oil exports, which Tehran has branded an “act of war.”

Military analysts warn that the IRGC’s threat to hit U.S. bases directly—rather than just naval targets—significantly raises the stakes for a regional conflict. Meanwhile, the UK Defense Ministry has confirmed it is deploying a Royal Navy warship to the region to protect international shipping interests.
