SEOUL — North Korea has officially denied recent assertions by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding renewed high-level communications, dismissing Washington’s decision to scale back joint military exercises with South Korea as a hollow gesture.
In a official statement released through the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim Yo-jong, director of the General Affairs Department of the Workers’ Party and sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, refuted claims that Pyongyang had responded positively to recent diplomatic outreach from Washington.
Rejection of Diplomatic Outreach Claims
Addressing President Trump’s statements made earlier in the week regarding direct contact with Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leadership denied any ongoing dialogue between the two heads of state.
Kim Yo-jong clarified that Pyongyang remains unaware of any recent foreign policy communication with Washington, directly contradicting White House assertions that high-level exchanges had resumed.
While acknowledging that Kim Jong-un maintains personal sentiments toward President Trump based on past engagements, she emphasized that personal relationships do not alter North Korea’s sovereign security actions or force structure.

Dismissal of Joint Military Exercise Adjustments
Pyongyang also expressed indifference to Washington’s directive instructing the Pentagon to reduce the scale and duration of the annual joint Ulchi Freedom Shield military exercises alongside South Korea.
North Korean state media emphasized that tactical changes to joint drills do not alter their underlying strategic nature:
- Hostile Intent: Kim Yo-jong stated that reducing the scope or timeline of joint drills fails to remove what Pyongyang views as the inherently aggressive design of joint U.S.–South Korean operations.
- Goodwill Gestures Rejected: The administration in Pyongyang warned that adjustments to military posture would not be treated as a concession, reiterating that North Korea focuses on the continuation of military cooperation rather than temporary operational modifications.
- Denuclearization Terms: North Korea maintained that future diplomatic engagements or summits remain off the table so long as Washington insists on complete denuclearization as a prerequisite for talks.
The developments underscore persistent friction between Washington and Pyongyang over military posture and nuclear status across the Korean Peninsula.
