KANO — The political battle for the control of Kano State has escalated into an all-out war after the newly unveiled governorship candidate of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, declared that the “battle line is officially drawn” between his movement and the incumbent Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Gwarzo, the immediate past Deputy Governor of the state, made the fierce declaration over the weekend following his official endorsement by the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. He vowed to deploy every legitimate political strategy to unseat Governor Yusuf in the upcoming 2027 gubernatorial election, setting the stage for one of the most volatile political contests in the history of Northern Nigeria.
The Collapse of a Former Alliance
The fierce rivalry between the two former allies follows the major political realignments that fractured the state earlier this year. Governor Yusuf, who rode to power under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) heavily backed by the Kwankwasiyya structure, shocked political stakeholders by defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Governor’s defection led to a bitter structural split, forcing Gwarzo to resign his position as Deputy Governor in March 2026. Following the collapse of the alliance, Kwankwaso migrated his entire political machinery into the newly fortified NDC umbrella to build a formidable opposition front.
A Consolidated Opposition Front
Gwarzo’s bid to reclaim the government house received a massive boost after his former rival, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna—the 2023 APC governorship candidate—stepped down his own gubernatorial ambitions to accept the NDC ticket for the Kano Central Senatorial seat.
Political analysts note that this strategic consensus gives Gwarzo a massive advantage. By pairing Gwarzo’s deep grassroots connections with Gawuna’s heavy elite and commercial backing in the highly populated Kano Central zone, the NDC has successfully built a cross-factional coalition explicitly designed to dismantle Governor Yusuf’s administration.
Public Backlash Over State Failure
In his address to party loyalists during the affirmation exercise in Kano, Gwarzo blasted the incumbent governor for abandoning the core values of governance and accountability that brought him to power. He accused Governor Yusuf of focusing on political survival and state-sponsored media spins rather than tackling the severe economic hardships, local inflation, and infrastructure decay affecting the state.
“The current administration has broken its promise to the people of Kano,” an NDC insider stated. “With Comrade Gwarzo leading the ticket alongside Dr. Gawuna, the battle line is drawn. We are ready to rescue Kano from leadership instability and give the people the governance they deserve.”
Verdict: A High-Stakes Turf War
With Governor Yusuf now leveraging the full weight of the ruling APC and federal state power, and the Kwankwasiyya-led NDC controlling the local grassroots machinery, the state is primed for a high-intensity campaign. Gwarzo’s open defiance signals that the opposition will not match the incumbent with quiet diplomacy, but will mount an aggressive, uncompromising challenge for the soul of Nigeria’s most populous northern state.
