ABAKALIKI, Nigeria — A prominent Ebonyi State social media commentator behind the platform “Ezza TV” has cried out over threats of physical violence and arrest by local actors.
The developments follow a video he shared exposing the infrastructure and learning conditions of nursery pupils at Community Primary School, Umuora Obulechi, Oriuzor, in Ezza North Local Government Area.
Exposure of Deplorable Infrastructure
The initial video clip uploaded by Ezza TV sparked widespread discussion across local networks. It showed young nursery school pupils sitting on the bare floor inside a dilapidated classroom block with no desks, chairs, or basic educational materials.
While the video was intended to draw the attention of the Ebonyi State Ministry of Education and independent donors to the plight of the rural community, it reportedly triggered political discomfort among certain local stakeholders and community leaders.
Secret Meeting and Threats
In a follow-up statement, the commentator revealed that a meeting was convened by individuals hostile to the exposure. According to him, the organizers are planning to assault him and orchestrate his arrest by security operatives to silence him.
“There was a meeting held about me today,” he stated. “They are allegedly planning to beat and arrest me because of the video I posted about the nursery school pupils of Community Primary School, Umuora Obulechi.”
Public Reactions and Intervention
The backlash against the commentator comes despite the video achieving its goal. Following the broadcast, Ebonyi businessman Chief Chibuike Orogwu (popularly known as Baby Oku) stepped in, sending engineers to survey the site and pledging to construct and equip a modern school building for the community.
Civil society groups and human rights advocates in Ebonyi State have condemned the threats against Ezza TV, urging the State Police Command to guarantee the safety of the whistleblower and ensure that local politicians do not use law enforcement machinery to suppress free speech.
