ABUJA, NIGERIA — In a major blow to the political machinery of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the Coalition of Atiku Support Groups Initiative (CASGI) has officially dumped its namesake and declared full support for Peter Obi.

The declaration, which sent ripples through the opposition landscape on Friday, May 8, 2026, marks one of the most significant realignments since the formation of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) earlier this week.

A Shift in Loyalty

CASGI, an umbrella body that previously coordinated thousands of grassroots volunteers for Atiku’s 2023 presidential bid, announced its decision following a strategic meeting in Abuja. The leadership of the coalition cited the “evolving political reality” and the need for a unified front to challenge the status quo as the primary reasons for their pivot.

The move follows Peter Obi’s recent departure from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to lead the newly registered NDC, alongside former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The “Unity” Narrative

Speaking at the declaration ceremony, representatives of the coalition expressed that while they maintain respect for Atiku’s contributions to Nigerian democracy, the current national climate demands a different approach.

“We believe that at this critical junction in our nation’s history, Peter Obi represents the most viable path toward economic recovery and national stability,” a spokesperson for the group stated. “Our structure is now fully committed to the NDC project and the leadership of Peter Obi.”

This defection comes at a sensitive time for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its 2023 candidate. Just days ago, Atiku Abubakar signaled his intention to run again in 2027, reportedly rebuffing suggestions to step aside for a younger candidate.

By losing a core support initiative like CASGI, Atiku’s influence over the youth-led grassroots movements—which have increasingly gravitated toward the “Obidient” banner—appears to be waning.

What’s Next?

Political analysts suggest that this endorsement will provide Peter Obi with a ready-made, battle-tested administrative structure in the North and South-East, which were previously loyal to Atiku. It also sets the stage for the NDC’s National Convention scheduled for tomorrow, May 9, where the party is expected to unveil its formal leadership structure.
