Umahi flags off Implementation of NEWMAP Community Action in Ebonyi

Governor of Ebonyi State, David Nweze Umahi Wednesday officially flag – off the implementation of NEWMAP Community Action at the State Ministry of Environment Centenary city, Abakaliki.

Gov Umahi was represented by the Commissioner for Environment Dr Nnabu Richard.

During his address, Umahi noted that the occasion is indeed very special in many ways, as it encapsulates the vision of Ebonyi state Government in providing environmentally friendly atmosphere and empowerment for the people of the state.

The Governor affirmed that erosion and flood were part of the nagging problems of the state. Stating that the coming on board of the World Bank assisted Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project became a turning point in ameliorating the ugly trend of these menace in the state.

“By share sense of vision, the Government of Ebonyi state threw its weight to the inauguration of the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) in the state.” (Umahi)

He stressed that “Since the NEWMAP effectiveness in the state, the achievements of the Project have been laudable. The civil works for the remediation works at the Nguzu Edda gully site where erosion menace had sacked the Council Headquarters of Afikpo South LGA has been completed and the 19.13km channelization works of the major rivers within the capital city of Abakaliki by the Project are nearing completion to the delight of all Ebonyians.

“The provision of solar powered motorized boreholes, energy efficient cook stoves and components; customized Roadside Waste Bins to institutions and communities, cargo tricycles for youth empowerment; solar power system to the COVID 19 Centre, Elinwovu, meteorological/laboratory/greenhouse equipment support to our State University, capacity building to local Government staff and agro -processing mill in Ebia Unuhu are amongst the achievements of the project too numerous to mention which a good number of you are beneficiaries in various communities.” Umahi said.

Adding “Today we are here to flag-off the provision of sub-grants to the various Community Interest Groups and Community Associations in NEWMAP intervention communities in order to support them in livelihood restoration and enhancement, being the associated benefits of the World Bank-Assisted NEWMAP in the state.”

A total of 61 Community interest Groups and 9 Community Associations were supported with the sum of Three Hundred and Three Million. Eight Hundred Eighty-Eight Thousand, Three Hundred and Two Naira (N303,887,302.00) as sub grants for their respective livelihood enhancement activities.

Umahi however advised the beneficiaries to use the funds for its intended purposes in their areas.

To ensure that this activities is successful, the beneficiaries will not only be monitored by the NEWMAP but also by the State Exco, traditional rulers and the town unions of each respective communities.

The Governor reaffirmed the position of his government on zero tolerance for indiscriminate dumping of waste into drainage channels, encroachment on waterways, illegal sand mining and other forms of practices that aggravate soil erosion and flooding in the state and retard efforts to enthrone a wholesome and safe environment.

He thanked the World Bank and the Federal Government of Nigeria for their kind support to Ebonyi State through the NEWMAP initiative.

In appreciation, Emmanuel Nwovu on behalf of the beneficiaries thanked Governor Umahi, the state cordinator of NEWMAP for fulfilling their long time promises and pledge to ensure that the items will be judiciously used.
