Fresh deployment of the Anambra Police Command and the Agunechemba Security Squad have taken over the compound of the St Faith Anglican Cathedral Awka
This is coming as the Supervising Bishop appointed by the Primate of the Anglican Church Rt Rev Samurai Ezeofor is being expected to report to duty and hold meetings with the Diocesan Board this Wednesday.
Ezeofor is to take over from Archbishop Alexander Ibezim who the Primate Henry Ndukuba had ordered to embark on six months compulsory leave .
Early Wednesday morning, a crowd of protesters had stormed the St Faith Anglican Cathedral protesting the expected arrival of the Supervising Bishop expressing their support to Archbishop Alexander Ibezim.
But the Chancellor of the Diocese Sir E.B I Nwafor SAN and the Board had earliier dismissed the appointment of Ezeofor contending that there nothing like the office of Supervising Bishop adding that they remain loyal to the Archbishop Alexander Ibezim.
Since the crisis erupted in the Diocese there has been heavy presence of security personnel and the Police Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga had earlier stated that more deployments would be made in a bid towards ensuring safety law and order in the area.
“The presence of the security operatives is to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order at the Cathedral and the Command has urged the waring factions to be law abiding and not to take the laws into their hands” he said.
Ikenga further noted that the Command has no support or sympathy for any of the factions adding that it would not give room for miscreants to capitalize on the situation to commit crime warning that the Command has zero tolerance to violence or ilegalty.
At the time of this report, it is not clear if the Supervising Bishop would still come to the Cathedral or hold meetings with the Diocesan Board as directed by the Primate.
