Philanthropist donates N100m as support to education in Bauchi

Disturbed by the rising rate of school drop outs in Bauchi state, coupled with the incapacitation of most parents to cater for the educational pursuits of their wards, a philanthropists and political activist, Nura Manu Soro, has through his pet project, Nura Manu Foundation, released the sum of N100million as scholarship to deserving students of Bauchi State origin in his effort to change the tide.

According to reports, so far, out of the said amount, the sum of N17, 933, 449 has been disbursed to 4,000 deserving students studying in 54 institutions across the country while efforts are on to disburse more to other deserving students after the mandatory screening of applicants.

The executive director of the Foundation, Moukthar Jarmajo revealed that it was after a tedious screening exercise that those who benefitted from the first phase of the gesture received their disbursements and are students in primary, Islamiyya and secondary schools as well as those in tertiary institutions that could not afford tuition fees.

“The exercise is a continuous process and with time and determination from the beneficiaries, the rate of dropouts will be reduced to the barest minimum” he said.

Commenting on what motivated him to venture into such a commendable project has is lacking in the state, President of the Foundation, Nura Manu Soro said: “I had the privilege to be educated and I know what it takes to be educated to an appreciable level. I know the dangers associated with an ignorant society and there is no reason we allow the children of the less privileged to dropout of schools because of finance while we can offer a supporting hand for continuity. We should support the education of the less privileged as a concern to a better and more enlightened society that we can be proud of. The Foundation has the interest of all at heart and we shall not relent until we make a difference

“I have made it as part of my responsibility to my state and to humanity to extend a helping hand to the less privileged without strings attached. We are for all of those that qualify for the scholarship without iota of any sentiment because Bauchi state belongs to all of us and we shall change tide with time” he said.
