The All Progressive Grand Alliance [APGA] gubernatorial primaries against the November 18, 2017 gubernatorial election appears to be ready to take off following the latest court judgments delivered by two High Courts in Anambra State restraining the Martin Agbaso led incursion into the party’s national executive council while declaring that Martin Agbaso was not a member of the APGA and thus could not be the party national chairman. One of the court rulings declared Victor Oye the authentic National Chairman of the party.

Following the rulings, the national chairman of the party called for all parties to join forces and focus on the task ahead. He explained that the crisis in APGA was over and that all glory be to God. In is words, “We give God all the glory that at last truth, which is naturally unassailable – has prevailed. I call on all members of APGA to rally support for the reelection of His Excellency Governor Willie Obiano by standing firmly together, avoiding all forms of distractions and looking up to God for direction”.

The National chairman also called on the party members to not allow room for enemies of the party to ferment disunity within the party. “We must not allow enemies of the party the latitude to continue to foment trouble. We have the capacity to work together – holding hands – to build a formidable party that will give Nigerians a new lease of life, particularly in this era of global economic downturn and political instability”.

It is recalled – a group of unhappy members of the national working committee [NWC] had claimed to dethroned the national chairman over offences punishable by impeachment. The unhappy members who were five [5] in number, and in clear minority proceeded to ‘impeach’ the national chairman. It quickly became a legal matter for the courts to deliberate on.

In the process of the deliberation, the leader of the unhappy members met tragedy and died suddenly. The legal deliberations continued nonetheless.

The remainder of the unhappy members recruited a former member of APGA in the person of Martin Agbaso to take over the leadership of the group of unhappy members. At the time Agbaso was recruited, Agbaso was an active card carrying member of the People Democratic Party [PDP].

As Agbaso joined the group, a High Court seating at Enugu pronounced a ‘magical’ judgment declaring Martin Agbaso the new APGA chairman. It jolted the political system in Anambra and nationally. Many political observers termed the judgment a purchased one, others termed it a ‘jankara’ ruling. A top PDP chieftain from Aguata Local Government Area responded that, “A PDP man now heads APGA”.

Following the supposed accession of Agbaso to the seat of national chairman, he began exhibiting symptoms of his real mission to APGA. He began closed door meetings with ‘enemies’ of the Obiano administration, persons such as Uche Ekwunife, Joe Martin Uzodike, and many other politicians who were determined to halt the governor from reaching a second term.

Gov Obiano on his part remained hesitant and reluctant to engage Agbaso knowing the potential risks and underhanded pinning involved.
