Conflicting reports have emerged over the fate of Success Ezenwafor, the young UNIZIK Primary School pupil swept away by floodwaters in Awka, Anambra State, on Tuesday, after the shuttle bus carrying him and other schoolchildren became trapped along the Nibo–Isiagu Road during heavy rainfall.
While some social media reports on Wednesday claimed the boy had been found alive under debris, Awka South Local Government Chairman, Prince Chinedu Okafor, told reporters at Amaku Teaching Hospital that Success’s body had been recovered. Okafor said the other seven children swept up in the incident were rescued alongside two adults and remain in stable condition, receiving treatment at the same hospital.
Success was reportedly on his way to school Tuesday morning when the vehicle he was traveling in was overwhelmed by flash floods following ten hours of torrential rain. Police say nine other people — seven schoolchildren and two adults — were rescued by the Anambra State Police Command’s Safe School Operatives working with local residents, while search efforts for Success continued into Wednesday.
The incident has renewed public criticism of infrastructure and drainage conditions under Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration, with residents at the scene pointing to poor road and drainage maintenance as a contributing factor. It comes as the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) has placed Anambra among 15 states facing high riverine flood risk between September 19 and 25.
