The Charles Kene Ojukwu Initiative (CKOi) Okunenyeife Foundation has donated N5 million towards the reconstruction of the walkway pavilion connecting the old Medical Centre of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, to the new Medical Centre building.
The Foundation disclosed this in a press release made available to newsmen, stating that the donation was presented on its behalf by the Manager of the CKOIF, Mr Sylvester Ojiugo, and Dr Mcdonald C. Abunike.
According to the statement, the donation fulfilled a commitment made by the Founder of the Foundation, Dr. Charles Kenechukwu Ojukwu, during his visit to the university in June 2026, when he met with the Vice-Chancellor, the Medical Director and her team.
The foundation said Ojukwu, a British-trained consultant family physician practising in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and an alumnus of the university, had during the visit requested to identify specific areas of need within the Medical Centre, which he could support as a medical doctor and member of the university community.
According to the Foundation, the reconstruction of the walkway pavilion would improve connectivity and ease movement between the old and new Medical Centre facilities for staff, students and patients.
Also speaking on the donation, Dr. Chibuike Abunike, a lecturer and confidant of Ojukwu, described it as one of the many commitments the foundation’s founder had made to the university community.
Abunike, according to the statement, said Ojukwu had remained accessible and supportive of the university community despite leaving Nigeria, adding that more donations were underway and would soon be formally presented to the Vice-Chancellor and the Director of the Medical Centre.
Reports have it that Ojukwu has maintained close ties with his alma mater by extending his medical expertise and philanthropic resources towards institutional development.
It was further gathered that the CKOi Okunenyeife Foundation has been committed to community health development and health insurance for underserved persons, as well as scholarships and youth empowerment initiatives across Anambra State, alongside support for institutions such as UNIZIK.
