Abuja — What could have been another Boko Haram tragic incident this year, was averted over the weekend, by staff of a private security firm, Encouragers Security company Limited, thwarted attempt by a female suicide bomber, suspected member of the deadly Islamic sect, Boko Haram from gaining entrance into the complex of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) with explosives.

The incident which happened on Friday, last week, during working hours , send fears into the spine of thousands of workers who were aware of the development making them to hurriedly close from work before the usual 4 pm official closing hours

Daily Champion learnt from reliable sources that the slim fair -in complexion lady in her 20s who hails from Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State, where the FCT minister also hails from was arrested by the security men at the gate with two explosives items.

The FCTA complex which the sect had attempted bombing houses the offices of the FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed; Minister of State FCT Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina as well as thousands of other workers.

According to the source, the fairly looking leady had arrived at the area 11 around noon from Dei-Dei a suburb of the FCT where she passed a night upon arrival in the FCT.

She was said be a first time visitor to Abuja and could not locate the FCTA therefore, had to a hire a taxis that brought her to the target.

When she arrived, she found the security arrangement hard to penetrate and she quickly contacted her co travelers in the ill fated project but she was told to wait then, she decided to be loitering waiting for the next instruction from her sponsors.

Daily Champion further gathered from source that the plot by hers sponsors was to keep her till their expected arrival from Kano after the 2 pm Jumat prayers would have been over and then, instruct her to fellow the crowd that usually prays outside the premises inside unchecked, to pave way for them to effectively detonate the bomb.

According to the source when the next instruction from her sponsors delayed in coming, the visibly worried attempted in entering the complex through the gate meant for only motorist then she was asked by the private guard where she was going.

She could not satisfy the guard about her mission with her poorly spoken English which made the security man to suspect her motive.

She was said to have managed to inform the security man that she was waiting for her brother, at this point the guard ask her to identify herself and she said she was coming from Kano this made security guy curious as the bomber was quickly arrested.

Our source told us that the lady confessed that when the JUMAT ended she actually became unhappy and afraid that she was going to kill so many Muslims who came out from the FCTA premises to pray.

Our correspondent further learnt that when the FCT Minister heard about the incident he ordered that the lady be brought to his official residence where he was at the moment and upon confession of the planned attack the female bomber was handed -over to the Police Special Anti- robbery Squared (SARS).

While she was being detained at the SARS office in Guzape, District, her sponsors gut wind of it and made attempt to bomb the SARS office in order to prevent her from revealing important information.

All attempt by our correspondent to speak with the FCDA Divisional of Police Officer as well as the Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on security proved abortive as several calls put across to the DPO phone were not answered.

In the same vain Prince Shield Nwazuruahu SA security to the minister was said to be in a crucial meeting by his staff when Daily Champion visited his office.

Meanwhile, Daily Champion gathered that an emergency security meeting which was held yesterday took a decision that no staff should stay within the office complex beyond 6 pm.

The circular entitled: Improving Security around the FCTA Secretariat dated 30th January 2012, decided among others issues that no private car should be allowed to park within in the premises.

It was also agreed in the meeting that members of staff who expect any visitor must send the name of such visitor to the security personnel for clearance.

The circular which was sent to all the secretariats and departmental heads as was well as aides of the minister also warned staff against bringing non- staff members in their vehicles.

Nigeria: We Are Shocked By Verdict – Al Mustapha Family

2

The family of Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, yesterday, described the verdict of the court as shocking.

Reacting to the verdict in Kano at their Bompai residence, the family spokesman, Hadi Al-Mustapha, said “the shocking verdict has pulled a temporary setback on our concerted effort to secure his freedom.”

Devastated by the verdict and somewhat broken in spirit, Hadi Al-Mustapha, noted that the long trial, which was brought to the end yesterday, was laden with ‘political undertone,’ stressing “the case would be pursued to its logical conclusion.”

“We strongly believe in the judiciary as the last hope of the common man, but I must confess to you that we are shocked by this verdict.

But in every situation, we should give glory to Almighty Allah,” he said.

Hadi Al Mustapha, hinted “the only thing I can tell you is that we are going on appeal and we will be vindicated at last, I promise you.”

He added, that the judgment had proven beyond reasonable doubt that his brother’s case was politically motivated in the light of years it took to bring it to close.

“Over 13 years, this man has been standing trial alongside many others but today all of them have been discharged and acquitted and my brother has been sentenced to death by hanging,” he said.

He was confident of the judgment being upturned at the appellate court, adding “we still have fate in the judiciary”. the highest court of the land will do justice on this matter and the family shall have course to smile again.”

Before Religion Derails Nigeria

It is sad to see Nigeria going up in flames. Very disheartening to see how religion is destroying Nigeria. My question is, can one live a moral life with religion? If yes, why the ongoing chaos around the world in name of religion? If no, why bother with it. In my opinion morality has nothing to do with religion. In the civilised world today the peace they enjoy comes from law and order as against the religion that we embrace in the developing world. These days its embarrassing that when you meet people after few lines of introduction, the next question that pops up usually is ‘where do you worship?’ Woe unto you if you do not give good answer to this question. You are turned to devil instantly with a serious warning of calamities that would befall you unless you chose one. At worst you will be bundled to a ‘man of God’ for deliverance. Is God that wicked and mean?

What has religion done for Nigeria? Well, some will say if not for religion there would have been Armageddon in Nigeria. I disagree with that; religion breeds hatred, pitched neighbours against each.

Religion has caused us many pains than good. You can trace the genesis of Nigeria/Biafra war, countless of mayhems in Jos and other Northern part of Nigeria to religion. Is it not time for us to revalue our inclination to this cult (religion)? Is it not time for us to stop hiding under the veil of religion to commit heinous crime? Is it not time we embrace the honest truth that religion brings sorrow than peace to our land.

All religions are evil; they never offer the world their promises (Peace). Let us imagine a Nigeria without ‘I’m a Christian, Muslim, sango and Amadi-oha worshiper. A Nigeria with no religion segregation, there will be great peace in the land. Religion does not bring the morality we hoped for. Most conflicts in world today are caused by religion in the name of soul winning. It creates division among people even within the Muslims and Christian communities. I subscribe to the quote of Thomas Paine “My Country is my World, my religion is to do good” Let us embrace this mantra and make Nigeria great. Let us see Nigeria as our world and let doing good to our fellow Nigerians be our religion. Let us stop killing one another in the name of God that is based on imported ideologies.

My greatest fear is that we are busy passing these crazy ideologies to our young minds. How do we justify showing kids horror movie or enticing them with sexual gratification at early age. But these are what both the Christians and Muslims do, covertly or overtly. At very early age, Christians will start terrorising young minds with horror picture of hell fire while their Muslim counterparts are also busy promising young minds virgin. But in real world these events are most like to cause uproar and at best classified 18 and above. Where is the morality? We should allow the young minds to flourish with no fear rather than compelling them to embrace these crazy ideologies. Let us do away with religion all together, being Christian, Muslim or whatever, and practice godliness and live as good neighbours. We can attain this without attaching any sentiment to any prophet or deity.

Religion is a man made event, which was concocted out of greed based on mind control (stopping us from being free). Government all the world love this. It sedates people with false hope. Let us see ourselves as Nigeria and not as Christians and Muslims, and build a great nation and make a better place to be proud of. Let us channel this energy for the development of Nigeria. Let us become Nigeria Development Fanatics. We should not allow this monster (religion) to derail Nigeria and destroy us. It is never late to rescue our beloved country from the clutches of this monster. Let me rephrase Gandhi here “Be The Change You Want To See In Nigeria.

God bless Nigeria.

Indecision is debilitating; it feeds upon itself, it is habit forming. Not only that, it is contagious, it transmits itself to others.” – H.A Hopf

As this month gradually nears its end, it is important to take stock of the things that happened that made this month one of the most unforgettable months in the history of this country. We need to re-visit the events, the news, the shocks, the losses and our response to them. Did we just shake up some dust? Did we just plan to unsettle things and then let them return to normalcy? Are we prepared to let things continue in the old order? Are we prepared to watch our new-found confidence wane again?

FUEL SUBSIDY

“How much better to know that we have dared to live our dreams than to live our lives in a letargy of regret.” – Gilbert Caplin

The month of January started with everyone expecting news of bombing as promised by the latest boys in town[Boko Haram]. It turned out that there was a bomb blast, but just not the type we expected. It came not from Boko Haram, but from the president himself. The grand commander himself announced the removal of fuel subsidy. The reactions started pouring out immediately. Civil society organizations and labor groups started a rebellion that we all thought would lead to a change in the old order. But it happened that 2 weeks and more than 12 lives later, labor called off the strike/mass protest and the Chief dictator himself deployed soldiers to the streets in a democratic government. We shouldn’t just forget the things that happened, we should learn from them. One of the things we should learn from the protests is that we shouldn’t rely on other people to fight our battles, we shouldn’t rely on other people’s platform; we should create our own platform.

PRESIDENT TURNED DICTATOR

“Nothing dies quicker than a new idea in a closed mind.” – John Mason

One of the most annoying things that came into light this month was the realization that we have a president who seems too scared to act, a president who takes his orders from IMF, a president who would rather get a handshake from IMF boss than receive the full embrace of Nigerians. What further brought into light the incompetence of Mr President was the unfortunate fact that Boko Haram decided to up their game and our president had the guts to tell Nigerians to live with the burden. The president further came out to announce that there were Boko Haram members in his government, yet he didn’t mention names. That set us thinking, would the president rather take actions to save lives or would he rather protect a few terrorists? Do our lives have value to him? Will he rather trade our lives to protect terrorists? The president of a nation should be held responsible for everything that happens. He should see to it that none of the citizens come to harm, but when a president neglects his duties and chooses rather to protect terrorists than protect peace-loving Nigerians, then we are headed for doom. The way the president descended so fast from the most adored president to the most cursed president makes one wonder how he ever got a hundred votes.Later, we started hearing that Mr president’s unhappy with Boko Haram. We need to ask, didn’t you give them free rein to work? Like Mike Murdock said, “You have no right to complain about what you permit.”

REMEMBERING OUR HEROES

“The measure of life is not in its duration, but in its donation.” – Peter Marshall

The resultant effect of the removal of subsidy didn’t go without claiming casualties. The Occupy Nigeria protests went well, we demanded our rights, we forced them to make some concessions; but we lost a few people. Obviously on orders from the grand commander himself, the police decided to use protesters for their target practice, and the Occupy Nigeria movement lost some comrades. We remember them today, not as MIAs, but as matyrs. It’s left to us make sure that they don’t die in vain. It’s left to us to fight for the Nigeria they envisioned. It’s left to us to keep on pushing till we get what we want. We miss you comrades, but we’ll fight to actualise your dream. We’ll change the order of things. R.I.P Comrades.

WAY FORWARD

“It’s never too late to be what you might have been.” – George Elliot

The most important thing is that the Occupy Nigeria protests showed us who we really are. It made us understand that no matter who we are, no matter what tribe we belong to, no matter what language we speak; we have one goal: FREEDOM, we have a common enemy: THE LOOTERS IN GOVERNMENT. What we experienced during the protests is something that doesn’t come easy. We shouldn’t let it go away, we should continue to build on the little successes we won. We should come together to build a platform that can neither be bought off nor compromised. It’s our nation, whether or not we become free depends on our collective actions.

SURE: 74,000 Jobs Set Aside For Vulnerable Groups – Okonjo – Iweala

1

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

FEDERAL MINISTRY OF FINANCE

News Release January 31, 2012
SURE: 74,000 JOBS SET ASIDE FOR VULNERABLE GROUPS – OKONJO-IWEALA
Twenty percent of the 370,000 jobs that will be created nationwide this year under the public works programme of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Scheme (SURE) will go to vulnerable groups including persons living with disabilities.
Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala disclosed this at an interactive forum with the leadership of the Joint National Association of Persons Living with Disabilities (JONAPWD), in Abuja, on Tuesday led by National President, Mr Danlami Basharu.
According to the minister, the initiative is a product of President Goodluck Jonathan’s focus on empowering all willing and able Nigerians to contribute their quota to growing the country’s economy.
She directed the national coordinator of the public works segment of SURE to immediately incorporate persons living with disabilities into his programme and furnish her with progress report before a follow-up forum gets underway in six months’ time.
“By seeing and incorporating you into the SURE Programme, nobody is doing you a favour. It is in the best interest of this country that everybody gets an opportunity to contribute to its development and the society loses by excluding you or any other segment”, the Minister assured them.
Recalling the example of President Frederick D Roosevelt, the only American President to serve four terms in spite of living with a disability, Dr Okonjo-Iweala described his example as an “eloquent lesson” of the benefits that society stands to gain if people living with disabilities are given a chance.
Dr Okonjo-Iweala praised persons living with disabilities in Nigeria for their resilience in the face of enormous odd, adding that considering the difficulties encountered in daily life by persons living without disabilities, what some Nigerians living with disabilities have achieved so far can only be described as awesome and amazing.
She paid special tribute to the Governor of Nasarawa, Alhaji Umaru Tanko Al-Makura State and a member representing Dutse Constituency in the Jigawa State House of Assembly Hon Adamu Shu’aibu Jigawar-Tsada for proving through their victory at the polls, that physical disability is no barrier to what a person can achieve and described members of the association as representing “one of the most inspiring segments of the Nigerian community”.
The Minister also promised to pass on to the appropriate quarters the request of the association for disability-friendly Mass Transit bus scheme run by persons with disabilities, through the Association as a way to ease their transportation problems and provide them employment.
The Minister promised to take up the implementation of aspects of the Disabilities Act with the relevant authorities to ensure that persons living with disabilities are properly integrated into the SURE Scheme in response to requests presented by the association.

0

From Chuks Collins, Awka

Anambra state citizens made up mainly of members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dragged the Federal Government, the Anambra state Government,  the state\s Independent Electoral Commission(ANSIEC), as well as the chairman of the commission, Prof Titus Eze seeking the enforcement of their fundamental human rights, over the continuous non conduct of council election in the state, since 2003

The applicants yesterday at the Federal High Court in Awka, presided over by Hon Justice Peter Olayiwola urged the court to issue orders compeling the respondents to within the next three months conduct council elections in the state.

In the submission of the team of lawyers led by Chiefs Tochukwu Onwugbufor (SAN) and E.E.Egbunonu, represented by Messrs I.C. Nsofor, the applicants noted that the continuous non-conduct of the council elections in the state has impinged on their fundamental human rights,

They also prayed the court to restrain the respondents or their agents from appointing persons in whatsoever name called other than elected chairmen and councilors from managing the affairs of the 21 councils including their finances and revenues, pending the conduct of the election and the inauguration of the elected chairmen and councilors.

An order to restrain the FG and the state governments from releasing or disbursing any money accruing to the 21 councils form the Federation Account and Revenue of Anambra state. That such monies be paid into a dedicated and interest-yielding account in the Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN), pending when the election would be conducted. That only monies meant for the payment of council staff salaries be deducted.

Before adjourning the matter to Feb 22, the presiding learned judge warned that he would proceed with the process once he\s convinced that all the parties have been served at the next hearing date.

He specifically requested the presence of Prof Titus Eze, the ANSIEC chairman who is currently battling in another court to save his job.

The FG made no appearance while the state\s Attorney General, chief Emmanuel Chukwuma was represented.

Akunyili vs Ngige: Name of APGA ‘Agent’ Missing From INEC’s Agents List

0

From Citizen Reporter, Awka

It was drama, tense moments and cross arguments as substantive hearing formally went into full gear in at the Awka Tribunal in a petition filed by  defeated APGA senatorial candidate in the April 2011 National Assembly , Dora Akunyili open her case against Dr Chris Ngige, Vice Chairman of Senate Committee on Power, by calling four witnesses.

Although   the case was called up to begin hearing yesterday, the single witness that was called up to the box merely adopted her written statement and there was no cross examination.

The 3-man panel tribunal headed by Hon Justice P.O. Onajite-Kuejuboja which resumed sitting at exactly 9.00am invited the 1st petition to continue her case cross examination of Witness DD, one Miss Rita Nwafor of Okpulu  Orji Village , Abba Town in Njikoka Ward 1.

Highlights of today’s proceedings includes a contradiction between the claim by Witness ‘AA’, Miss Chikaodili Ifeoma Nonyelu to have served as APGA agent  in the Senatorial Election re-run of April 26, 2011 and the fact that her name was not contained in the INEC’s certified true copy of list of agents for Enugwu Ukwu Ward 1, including Ebe Enuagu Code 003

Miss Nonyelu had sworn in her written deposition “My real name is contained in the list of APGA agents submitted to the 2NDRespondent (INEC) for the election.

However in the certified True Copy which was admitted by the Tribunal as an exhibit and which Miss Nonyelu was made to read in person, the name of the APGA agent for Ebe Enuagu Hall Polling Unit Code 003 was Obiora Okafor whose photograph was displayed on page 22 of the certified list.

Answering questions, from Emeka Ngige SAN, Counsel to Senator Ngige, Nonyelu who was rather tensed up admitted that apart from being a business woman which she told the court was her profession, she is also the Personal Assistant (PA) to Prof Mrs Akunyili.

She said she was molested by ACN thugs and kept at a distance form the polling table where the electoral officials sat unlike all other agents for other political parties ,but stood by her written testimony that she was still able to observe that two booklets containing 100 ballot papers each was given to the CAN agents to thumb-print.

However when Counsel for INEC O J Nnadi, SAN sought to know how she knew that the ballot papers were for Senatorial election and not for the State Assembly elections held on the same day, she said : I don’t know”

Nonyelu  also said “I  cannot remember” when Nnadi asked  here to tell the court, which party won the State Assembly election held on the same say in the polling booth.

Under Cross examination by INEC Witness DD, Miss Rita Nwafor who claimed to be a teacher, and a voter in Central Primary School Polling Unit Code 003 Abba, admiiteed that it was political party agents who informed her that there were no results sheets for recording of votes on the April 9, 2011 senatorial elections.

Miss Nwafor testified that she did not inspect the materials herself and did not join the agents who did.

Miss Nwafor has in her written deposition averred that “The result sheets were not brought so an election did not hold in the polling unit on the election day.

A dramatic twist was introduced when Witnesses BB and CC both of whom swore to and wrote their depositions in English Language claimed they could not express themselves in English, compelling the court to introduce an interpreter to hear their testimony.

Under cross examination Witness BB Ikechukwu Okafor admitted that she completed his secondary education said she arrived at 11.30 am on the voting day and therefore could not testify to those accredited before his arrival He Corroborated the testimony of Miss Nonyelu that she was molested and taken far away from the polling booth.

When INEC Counsel asked how she knew that Miss Nonyelu was an APGA agent, he said : ‘It INEC officials that said so’.

But the climax of the drama was in the testimony of Witness CC , Mr Sunday Okeakpu who claimed in his written evidence that votes cast in his polling Unit at Orubuchi Kindergarten School was not counted and was not recorded, adding that he was there till voters ‘dispersed’.

When he was however asked what happened to those votes, he said: I do not know’. He gave his testimony in Igbo under interpretation after interventions by his lawyer Barrister Oguji, standing in for ON Obianwu SAN

The Matter has been adjourned till Wednesday February 1, 2012 for further hearing in which four witnesses including Prof Akunyili and an expert witness are expected to testify.

Before adjourning on Monday the Tribunal had granted the prayers of Akunyili and APGA to tender additional forensic evidence and the request of Ngige for forensic counter-evidence, while granting Ngige’s request to replace a deceased witness.
