Nnewi Killings –ACN Demands Judicial Panel

‘Life has suddenly become very cheap in Anambra State’

Last Friday about six persons lost heir lives in Nnewi following a gun battle between the task force of Anambra Task Force on Markets and Parks (Mpiawa Azu), ostensibly on a mission to collect revenue from Nnewi and the Youth of Nnewi.

While we cannot assess all the fa cts inthe build-up to the matter, we are appalled that added to the plethora of needless deaths arising from the inability of the Anambra State government to secure the state, there could be further deaths caused by, premeditated attacks from agents of the State government in Nnewi to the tune of six lives, which could be more, as the media-which is usually conservative in reporting casualties.

We wonder why a state apparatus should shoot live ammunition to kill those it seeks to obtain revenue from and better their lives, instead of effecting arrests with a view to facilitating the due process. Before Nnewi, such massive resistance and violent clashes have taken place in Onitsha, Nkpor, Obosi and a few other market towns, with heavy casualties.

We are quick to observe scathing comparisons between the crude mode of operations of the Anambra State Task Fore on and the defunct ‘Bakassi Boys ‘under the Chinwoke Mbadinuju era which if it ever added value to our lives in Anambra ,has been overtaken by superior human develop drive and therefore should be consigned to the dustbin of history.

At some point, the Bakassi Boys, constituted more of a source of terror to the majority of citizens than the criminal elements they were meant to check. We see parallels in Mpiawa Azu.

That an organization of the state could fail to act within the law setting it up and move into a different era of extra-judicial killings of those that were supposedly to benefit from setting up those organizations is a serious matter that should not be glossed over by the Nigerian Police, and the Anambra State House of Assembly.

Once again we condemn the excessive violence e deployed by the Anambra State Task Force on Parks and Market, which only last year was responsible for the violence perpetrated by political parties outside the ruling APGA in the state including Senator Chris Ngige in Onitsha and Se. Annie Okonkwo in Awka.

We also recall with a very painful heart that the same task force was used by the APGA–led state government led by o e ‘Iko Nso’to burn three campaign vehicles and inflict bodily harm on the person citizens of Anambra State on three occasions in Agulu.

We do not envisage an Anambra of any vision where people daily die like fowls under the seeming supervision of the government that should protect them. Life has suddenly become cheap in Anambra State, given the increasing reports of violence and deaths. We consider it a failure of governance by the APGA government in Awka.

Whatever revenue was sought to be recovered on Friday in Nnewi ended up not being collected, because what ought to be a civil operation in a clime that means well ,ended up being mission to annihilate which saw the movement of ‘troops’ from far away Onitsha to conquer territories in Nnewi.

If the Task Force was a well –organised and a well-intentioned body, there is no reason why its Nnewi branch cannot carry out the revenue drive and resort to the Policce in Nnewi when overpowered or overawed. Rather they sought to enlist the cover of their troops commanded by Sylvester Nwobualor and the Governor of Anambra State, as if civil liberties should continue to elude Ndi Anambra on end.

Besides the duty which this suspect body sought to do in Nnewi is nothing more than the duties of a properly constituted local government which unfortunately is not in place because the state government operatives led by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Mr Dubem Obaze, urged on by Governor Peter Obi, insists on preventing local government elections, so that monies belonging to the third tier of government would continue to be siphoned by individuals.

We urge the Anambra State Government to set up a judicial panel of enquiry to unravel the immediate and remote causes of the unfortunate killings Nnewi and rise up to the responsibility of protecting life and property in Anambra State.

WE urge the State House of Assembly to undertake a comprehensive review of the enabling laws and mode of operations of the Anambra State Task Force on Parks and Markets, more popularly known in the state as Mpiawa Azu.

We commiserate with the families of those who died in the avoidable and unprovoked war in Nnewi and trust that those who lost their lives will not die in vain.

“Arrest Nwobu-Alor Now” APGA Chairman Urges Inspector General of Police

1

by Jude Atupulazi, Awka

Following the wanton killing of three innocent citizens of the commercial city of Onitsha last week by the group known as Mpiawa Azu, the national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Sir Victor Umeh, has called on the inspector-general of police, Mohammed Abubakar, to immediately arrest the special adviser to the Anambra State governor on parks and markets, Sylvester Nwobu-Alor, and one Mr. Iko who is the leader of the notorious group.

Umeh while addressing newsmen in Agulu at a public function, frowned at the wanton manner the group had been operating, noting that several appeals he had made to the state governor, Peter Obi, for the proscription of the group had fallen on deaf ears. According to Umeh, the activities of the group had been causing incalculable harm to the people of the state and he used the opportunity to distance his party, APGA, from the menacing group.

He accused Nwobu-Alor of using the group to terrorize innocent citizens in the name of task force and equally accused the governor of shielding Nwobu-Alor. ‘The I-G of police should immediately arrest Nwobu-Alor and Iko for their nefarious activities. We can no longer fold our hands and watch them terrorize the public,’ Umeh stated.

On the purported call for his removal as APGA national chairman as a result of incompetence, Umeh laughed it off and described Nwobu-Alor as suffering from senility. He wondered what an 88-year old man was still doing in Obi’s cabinet and called for his replacement with a young, capable person.

Umeh also wondered where Nwobu-Alor was when he, Umeh, returned Obi for the second time as governor and where he was when he was fighting to save APGA from the grips of its enemies led by Chekwas Okorie. ‘Was I incompetent then? Why is it that after I have secured the party for them and returned Obi for second term they now say I’m incompetent?’ Umeh queried and asserted that no one was capable of removing him as he enjoyed the support of a vast number of APGA faithful.

He also condemned the non-conduct of local government elections by the governor and said that it had affected democracy in the grassroots. He also carpeted Obi for not empowering his party people and said this had been responsible for the poor run of the party in recent elections as party members out of hunger collected money from opponents to work against the party. He accused Obi of killing APGA by his style but assured that they were doing something to save the party. ‘I can assure you that APGA will retain Anambra State in 2014. Nobody can stop us. We will make sure nobody anoints anyone to succeed him but the people. We will bring out a popular person to give us what we want,’ Umeh assured.

He said it was because of his opposition to the non-conduct of council polls that some people were now fighting him because of what they gained from council funds.

Gov Okorocha Converts Oguta Lake to Movie Village

1

As part of the efforts to make the Oguta Blue Lake of treasure the
greatest tourism centre in Africa, the Imo State government has
reached agreement with the Actors Guild of Nigeria [AGN] towards the
lake to a movie village.

The State Governor, Rochas Okorocha disclosed this to newsmen while
touring the site with some actors in the Nollywood Industry.
Owelle Okorocha added that in order to ensure that the facilities are
improved and managed effectively, the supervising ministry, the ministry of culture and Tourism would be re-located to the Oguta Lake.

He said that the state government would erect befitting buildings
needed for movie activities as well as a grant free access to the
state owned oguta motel and other facilities to the movie industry in
the country.

On the need for security, the governor said that the road leading to
the lake would be barricaded with a gate while a police post would be
built at the lake.

Governor Okorocha equally directed government ministries and the 27
local government councils of the state to erect a building each at the
vicinity of the lake to fast track the development of the area.

He disclosed that about $500 million is needed to develop the lake to
international standard while the state government is expected to
provide the initial fund of $1 million.

Governor Okorocha equally disclosed that government is creating
jetting beach, procuring over 10 speed boats to ease transport at the
lake as well as launch a boat regatta festival on the lake in a short
period.

The governor who decried Nigeria’s over-reliance on oil noted that Imo
State has the potential to realize millions of dollars from tourism as
inherent in the lake.

Mrs Patience Ozokwo, a Nollywood star thanked the governor for giving
them opportunity and promised that the actors would make an optimal
use of the facility available at the lake.

on other state government to emulate the efforts of governor Okorocha
in developing tourism in Nigeria.

Naira for each community totaling about N3 billion Naira as a take-off
grant for the fourth-tier government christened Community Government
Council [CGC].

Governor Okorocha who disclosed this in a meeting with stakeholders
and senior civil servants at Ahiajoku Convention Center, Owerri, said
the fund will be deployed to communities under the management of the
civil servants that will form the administrative wing of the
fourth-tier government.

He said the fund would be invested largely on agriculture, adult
education and other micro projects that will fast-track development at
the grassroots.
“I am pleased to announce to you that as part of measures to
kick-start the fourth-tier government, the state government has
approved the sum of five million Naira for each community as a
take-off grant.  The fund will be deployed to specific areas like
agriculture to fast -track development at the rural areas.   It will
be the responsibility of the civil servants that will be posted to
form the administrative wing of this government to manage the fund as
appropriated” Governor Okorocha said.

Governor Okorocha stated 3,000 [three thousand] civil servants will be
deployed from the 27 local government areas and state civil service
for immediate take-off of the Fourth-tier government even as the
communities have been mandated to provide temporary offices for the
workers.

He said that the governing council which will serve as an advisory
body will still retain the traditional ruler as Chairman with
community Liaison Officer [CLO], President-General, Woman and Youth
leaders as members.

Governor Okorocha disclosed that his administration has set up a
Judicial Panel of Inquiry to screen traditional rulers with a view to
dropping those with dirty records owing to their direct involvement in
governance.

“Because of the direct involvement of traditional rulers in this
fourth-tier government, the state government has decided to revisit
the past records of the traditional rulers to drop those that don’t
deserve to be part of this new arrangement. The essence is to ensure
that this lofty idea is successfully carried out without any
impediment from anybody including some of the traditional rulers with
past dirty records.  It will also mark the end of an era where
criminals dominate our revered traditional institution”  Governor
Okorocha said.

The governor who also announced the abolishment of Town Unions in the
state, further explained that decentralization through the community
government will checkmate corruption in the system, involve key
stakeholders in the business of governance and guarantee development
at the rural areas.

Governor Okorocha also declared war against kidnappers and criminals
in the state and announced a handsome reward of N1 million to whoever
that volunteers useful information that ultimately lead to the arrest
of a suspected kidnapper and N200,000 for armed robbers.

He explained that the step is one of the strategies mapped out to
address the problems of insecurity which he said has continued to
scare away foreign investors as well as slow down the pace of
development in the state.

In his contribution, the Chairman Imo State Council of Traditional
Rulers, Eze Sam Ohiri urged the organized labour to join hands with
Governor Okorocha whom he said has shown enough commitment to
transform the state.

He enjoined them to desist from raising unnecessary controversies
over the proposed fourth-tier government and redeployment of some
civil servant to the communities which he also admitted would
encourage development at the grassroots.

The Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, Hon Ben Uwajimogu assured
that the legislature will give the fourth-tier the necessary legal
backing it deserves  hence it is conceived to boost development at the
rural communities as well as promote good governance.

In his remarks, Chief Judge of Imo State,  Justice Benjamin Njemanze
urged the legislature to enact the enabling laws to give  legal
backing to the proposed fourth-tier in line with the constitution of
the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Who is Misleading America on Boko Haram?

by Frisky Larr

Recent unconfirmed media reports claim that theUnited States of Americais leaning towards an official policy position on the wave of terror attacks perpetrated onNorthern Nigeriaby the Boko Haram group. There seems to be a movement against the listing of Boko Haram as a terrorist organization. A group that has unleashed a reign of street terror onNigerianever before experienced in the history of the country.

These unprecedented vicious acts, which introduced the hitherto unknown element of suicide bombing into the general psyche of the Nigerian Muslim community, has become an omnipresent plague exacerbating a prevailing sense of general insecurity in the country. It is an act that has catapulted the Nigerian Muslim community overnight, to a level of parity with the dominant Jihadist version of political Islamist movements in theMiddle East!

Militant Islamists fromIndonesiato the Abu Sayyaf movement of thePhilippinesundoubtedly derive their inspirations from theMiddle East– the spiritual seat and birthplace of the Prophet Mohammed. In their activities spreading death and bloodshed, they have never been left in doubt by western governments on how they are viewed and rated. No world leader minces words explaining that assaults on people who go about their daily lives in accustomed routine expecting nothing unusual, cannot qualify for anything else but terrorism.

Christians wake up on a Sunday morning in northern Nigeria. They dress themselves up and proceed with a sense of piety. They move to the only place they expect to find some abstract respite and escape from the pressures of the entire working week. They proceed to the Church hoping to drown their worries generated by daily occurrences in prayers and nurture spiritual hopes for the unforeseeable future through songs of praise. They arrive at the altar feeling at their best in physical composure and emotional unison with the calling of their God most high. The same God that Muslims believe in! Then something happens. A loud deafening sound is heard in the midst of all the prayers, singing and dancing. Consciousness darkens out all of a sudden! Some come around minutes after grieving in severe pains after losing several body parts. They are told the number of deaths before they realize that the numbers are not mere numbers. They include their own children, father, mother, relatives, neighbors and friends. They try to figure out what has happened. They try to understand who would wish them dead. Then they are told they had been attacked by Boko Haram for no offence they can imagine.

The search for an answer to the questions raised by these deadly attacks has always produced conflicting answers. The prelude was clear. Northern Nigerians lost out in a power game that it had long controlled unperturbed. It did not disguise its anger over the monumental loss. Prominent sons of the land threatened that a political leader who takes over the helms of affairs and deny the region what it perceived as its legitimate right to the Presidency following the unexpected death of a Northern President, would inherit a land that will stay ungovernable. When the results were declared, bloodshed began in the form of social unrest killing several young university graduates stationed in the region for obligatory national service. Prominent sons of the North sounded a loud tone with their conspicuous silence. Silence that sounded like: “there you go! We warned you!”

Then slowly Boko Haram began its own reign of bloodshed. First, it was declared as vengeance on the killing of their leader in Police Custody in 2009. That was the year in which the group rose to nationwide prominence. They attacked government buildings and police stations without warning. No one knew what informed these attacks but the media reported the meaning of the name of the organization: “Boko Haram.”

Boko (perhaps an Hausa word) was said to stand for Western Education. Haram – a known Arabic word – means “Abomination”. Western Education was therefore a forbidden act that broke all the taboos of the values they understood and their value was religion.

We then understood that they were fighting a battle against the westernization of their religious values. Law enforcement waded in and tracked down their leader. In a bid to underscore the fundamental political ideology of secularism driving the multi-ethnic and multi-religious Nigeria, the young man was to be prosecuted. In a manner that superficially compares to the outright execution of an unarmed Osama Bin Laden however, the Nigerian Police took the laws into its hands. The young man was summarily executed in custody. Calm followed for a year or two.

The tempestuous presidential elections of 2011 came and went. The threats made are now history. The immediate aftermath of those elections in which scores of innocent lives were killed is no longer news. But what informed the resurgence of attacks by Boko Haram against government buildings, Churches, Bars, Police stations, etc. after the 2011 presidential elections and all the threats by northern politicians still makes headline news.

Today,Nigeriahas woken to the reality that it is fighting a limited war with a group of radicalized young minds. Self-imposed radical Islamic scholars!Nigeriahas cried out to the world for assistance – logistical and psychological. WithinNigeria, there is a consensus on the nature of the battle being fought with the combined efforts of law enforcement and limited military logistics. Unfortunately however the world is still groping in the dark trying to find a definitive status to qualify the violence.

With logistical and psychological assistance from foreign countries, Nigerian intelligence was fed data confirming Boko Haram’s link with Al-Qaeda in theMaghreb. After all, the sophistication in their modus operandi could not be lost on any observer. Hardware weaponry and improvised explosive devises were amazingly similar to the ones used inIraqby the defunct group of Abu Moussaf Al-Zakarwi.

Of course there were criminal gangs who also raided banks time and again and stacked away millions in hard currency. This explained a part of their source of funding. No honest observer could however deny having suspected that politicians – Northern politicians – played a prominent role in preparing this violent onslaught while admonitions were vehemently being dispersed during the elections of 2009.

As time went on though, these suspicions gained concrete credibility. Having gained foreign logistical support, the Nigerian security forces were now able to record isolated successes in making high-profile arrests. The first prominent politician in the person of Senator Muhammed Ali Ndume was pinned down in the aftermath of the confessions of a murderous top-notcher. One after the other, more high-profile leaders of the group were caught in the net of law enforcement in quick succession.

Only then did prominent politicians – Northern politicians – suddenly begin to speak out. Before then though, their conspicuous silence had spoken volumes. One could not help suspecting that the dragnet was closing in slowly on suspected politicians up north who have at best, hitherto enjoyed and rejoiced over the new security challenges that renderedNorthern Nigeriaalmost ungovernable. None other than the President had cried out openly in frustration that agents of this group were spread through strategic organs of governance in the country including his own cabinet.

A visibly lame duck President offered an involuntary proof of his incapacitation by failing to name and shame to say the least of prosecuting (at least) those agents of Boko Haram in his cabinet. The nation had long expected him to wield the axe on those voluble men and the men behind them, who issued tangible threats in the run-up to the Presidential elections. The President failed across the board.

Prominent Northern politicians began to speak out, some of them – not unsurprisingly – calling for immediate negotiations. Meanwhile calls for splitting the nation along the religious line once suggested by Muammar Ghadaffi were getting louder. One could not help sensing the fear amongst the Northern elites that they were about to lose everything that they thought they stood to gain while launching the bloody battle. Very few courageous ones voiced outright condemnation of the killing of innocent souls.

Then the Guru of northern intellectualism – the Governor of Nigeria’s Central Bank Sanusi Lamido Sanusi – joined the fold. He added his voice to the controversy and declared economic deprivation, unemployment and marginalization as the underlying cause of the carnages on Christmas day, Easter Sunday, United Nations building etc. perpetrated by Boko Haram. Others blamed police brutality in the killing of Boko Haram’s leader in 2009 as the cause of the reign of terror which included the bombing ofNigeria’s Police Headquarters inAbujain 2011 and several Churches. The intellectual Guru went a step further donating government money to Muslim victims in oneKanoblast and subsequently sought to remedy the situation by also donating a meager sum to Christian victims only after a public outcry.

For well-meaning Nigerians though, there has been no mistaking the handwriting of terrorism on the wall. The Americans saw it too.Washingtonmoved to designate Boko Haram as a terrorist group.

All of a sudden, some Nigerian political groups launched an intensive lobby in Washingtonto sell the idea that Boko Haram was not a terrorist group. In a shocking and most amazing development, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi’s arguments found their way into Washington. The poor young killer boys are marginalized and economically deprived! They are pitiably frustrated in the face of police brutality! Their innocent young leader who could not harm a fly was murdered in cold blood in police custody.

Nigeriaas a country ruled by northern Muslim leaders for a large part of its years since independence, has failed to toe the path of development across the board. No single region was spared. The north was not singled out for economic deprivation.

This makes it all the more shocking thatWashingtonis reported convinced by these simplistic arguments. Ambassador Johnnie Carson, Deputy Secretary of State forAfrica, is reported to be leading this drive for a policy position. He is reportedly most convinced with the submission that the killing of hundreds if not thousands of innocent Nigerians by Boko Haram is the result of economic deprivation suffered by frustrated youngsters. It does not matter that no single church frustrated them. It does not matter that economic frustration will always be found in the biography of almost every terror foot-soldier fromAfghanistanthroughIraqup untilSyria.

Ambassador Carson seems to have bought into the idea that police brutality is one point to consider in the reaction of Boko Haram. I do not know if anyone would blame the American special squad for excess brutality in the killing of Osama Bin Laden who was not armed.

The crucial question then remains “who on earth is misleading the Americans?” Nigerians have their suspicion and they center on northern politicians. There are names suspected too! But more importantly, will the Americans be so naïve, stupid or collusive to buy into such shabby and unmistakably self-serving arguments in the interest of obvious forces? There is also no shortage of suspicions of American motives in managing political matters inAfrica.

To further darken the murky waters of political confusion however Boko Haram has declared in a recent statement that its mission is the total Islamization of entireNigeria. Just so much for Police brutality and economic deprivation!

0
Jos, Plateau State

PRESS STATEMENT ON THE THURSDAY APRIL 26, BOMBINGS OF THIS DAY NEWSPAPER AND THE SUN NEWSPAPER OFFICES IN ABUJA AND KADUNA BY RT. HON. CHIBUIKE ROTIMI AMAECHI, CON, CHAIRMAN NIGERIA GOVERNORS’ FORUM AND GOVERNOR RIVERS STATE ON BEHALF OF THE NIGERIA GOVERNORS’ FORUM

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) received with shock and dismay, the bombings of This Day Newspapers’ offices in Kaduna and Abuja as well as the offices of The Sun and The Moment Newspapers and condemns this barbaric act in its entirety. This is one attack too many in a series of consistent destruction of lives and property in our nation. It is most abysmal that perpetrators of these acts unashamedly hide under the guise of religion and poverty.

The NGF realizes the quest and agitation of our people for a better nation and sustainable living and development, we refuse in its entirety the notion that brigandage and heartless destruction would herald our Eldorado. Our nation is bigger than all of us and we must all protect it.

We at the NGF condemn these acts and pledge our support for the security agencies and the Federal Government in our quest to guarantee the lives and properties of every Nigerian citizen regardless of race or creed.

We commiserate with the families of all the victims who have died in all these unfortunate incidents. We also express our regrets to the publisher, management and staff of ThisDay, The Sun and The Moment Newspapers for their loss.

We reassure you that this is an assault on our collective psyche and one which we must not allow to go unchallenged. We ask the Media and Nigerians in general not to be deterred or undaunted by the acts of a few miscreants to plunge our nation into the valley of the shadow of death but to stay focused. As Nigerians we are a resilient people and have overcome severally in the past attacks on our psyche and nation hood. This time too, we shall overcome.

On our part as governors, we pledge our commitment to better the lives of our people and to guarantee the peace and security of our various states. It is an oath to which we swore and one that we are determined to keep. We also urge the Federal Government to remember that it owes every Nigerian and all those living in Nigeria the responsibility to protect lives and property.

Bomb attacks kill nine at Nigerian newspaper offices

0
By Ola Awoniyi (AFP)–12 hours ago

ABUJA — A suicide attack at the Abuja bureau of a top Nigerian newspaper and an attempted car bombing at another of its offices killed nine people Thursday in the first such strikes on the country’s media.

The second attack hit the northern city of Kaduna. Later in the day, a third, smaller bombing also occurred in the same city, leaving three people wounded.

The attack in the capital Abuja saw a suicide bomber drive into the back of the building belonging to ThisDay, one of the country’s most prominent and influential papers.

Five people were killed, including the bomber, while eight were wounded at the privately-owned paper, ThisDay said in a statement, which called it an “attack on journalism.”

In Kaduna, one of the main cities in the north, a bomb went off outside a complex housing a number of newspaper offices, including for ThisDay. An attacker also drove his car onto the premises, which later exploded.

Four people were killed in Kaduna, while 19 were wounded, a rescue official said on condition of anonymity.

Secret police said in a statement there were two people in the car in the Kaduna attack, with one caught by civilians as he sought to flee and handed over to authorities.

He was identified as Umaru Umaru Mustapha from Maiduguri, the base of Islamist group Boko Haram.

A purported spokesman for the Islamist group had recently made threats against news media outlets, saying they were being used by authorities to publish stories against Boko Haram.

President Goodluck Jonathan, currently attending a regional summit in Ivory Coast, condemned the attacks, as did the United States, saying that they targeted “free speech itself”.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said that it was up to Nigeria to determine the culprits of the attacks but voiced solidarity with concerns about Boko Haram.

The US embassy in Nigeria warned last week that Boko Haram might be planning attacks against hotels or other areas in Abuja, but the government sought to downplay the concerns.

Thursday’s loud blast in Abuja shook the area, sending smoke billowing into the air and causing panic, with memories of a suicide bombing of UN headquarters in the Nigerian capital in August still fresh.

“The suicide bomber came in a jeep,” the chairman of ThisDay’s editorial board, Olusegun Adeniyi, told reporters at the scene.

“(Security guards) opened the gate for them … The guy drove in through the gate and rammed into the building and exploded.”

The attack hit the area housing the printing press, some distance away from the newsroom, and blew the roof off there. The paper said the dead included a security guard, three passers-by and the bomber.

The newspaper is based in the economic capital Lagos, but has a major operation in the capital Abuja.

Its owner, Nduka Obaigbena, is a high-profile figure who sponsors glitzy events with speakers who have included ex-US president Bill Clinton, among others. Major pop stars have appeared at his festivals in Nigeria and elsewhere.

In Kaduna, witnesses reported a chaotic scene where an attacker threw a bomb outside a complex housing newspaper offices, while his car was driven onto the premises.

The bomb outside the premises exploded, while the car later detonated.

A secret police statement, which provided slightly different details than witnesses at the scene, said one of the suspects — Mustapha — exited the car with a bomb, which he threw at two people. The blast killed them, it said.

He later “pulled out a pistol and fired several shots in the air in an attempt to escape”.

“He was however caught and subdued by brave members of the public who refused to be intimidated and handed him over to security forces,” the statement said.

It did not say what happened to the second suspect mentioned in the statement.

An AFP correspondent reported that police fired shots at the car after it had been left and it exploded twice. Authorities were later said to have discovered three gas cylinders and other explosive devices inside the car.

The explosion that went off later in the day in Kaduna saw a suspected Boko Haram member plant a bomb on a road which wounded three people, an emergency official said.

Boko Haram’s insurgency, mainly in northern Nigeria, has killed more than 1,000 people since mid-2009.

It claimed responsibility for an August suicide bombing of UN headquarters in Abuja that killed at least 25 people.

The group’s deadliest attack yet occurred on January 20 in the northern city of Kano, the country’s second-largest, when coordinated bombings and shootings killed at least 185 people.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation and largest oil producer, is roughly divided between a mainly Muslim north and predominately Christian south.

South South Governors Condemn ThisDay Bombing

Governors of the six South- South States of the country have condemned, in the strongest terms, the twin bomb attacks on Thisday Newspaper Offices in Abuja and Kaduna state.
In a joint statement issued on the sidelines of the 2nd South-South Economic Summit in Asaba, the Delta State Capital, the Governors described the attacks as barbaric and cowardly. While wondering the motive of the attacks, which coincided with its ongoing regional summit where the newspaper’s Publisher, Mr Nduka Obaigbena is playing a pivotal role, the Governors urged the security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators of the attacks are apprehended and made to answer for their heinous crime.
“We totally condemn the bomb attacks on the premises of the ThisDay Newspaper in Abuja and Kaduna state. It’s barbaric, cowardly and condemnable. “We call on security agencies to fish out the perpetrators of this heinous crime and bring the full weight of the law to bear on them,” they stated. The Governors sympathized with the staff and management of the Newspaper, urging them not to be deterred by the incident.
They expressed regret that the attacks came at a time President Goodluck Jonathan is doing a lot to restore confidence in the Nigerian state through purposeful leadership. They used the opportunity to reiterate their support to the President in his determination to tackle acts of terror and other forms of insecurity in the country.
The statement was signed by Governors Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State; Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State; Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State; Liyel Imoke of Cross River State; Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State and Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State.
