Why Ibori’s Dynasty Still Reigns in Delta

2

– By Amos Igbebe

Although former Governor of Delta State, Chief James Onanefe Ibori, is cooling off in London prison, his influence over the affairs of Delta State cannot be wished away. As long as he lives, his influence has continued to dominate the affairs of the state. Almost all political bigwigs and power brokers in the state look up to Ibori for political blessings. And as it always turns to be, those who worship him as god have never gone home without the blessing being poured on them.

Ex-Governor-James-Ibori

Even as he currently pines away in the prison, he is still being seen as the great man of Delta, hence, he is called the Odidigboigbo of Africa by his fans who are spread across the state and other parts of the country. No issue of significance has ever taken place in the state without his knowledge and possibly blessing before its commencement. Somehow, his signature is needed, perhaps by giving his consent to the said project, an issue which is easily understood by the ruling cabals.

As against the stigma that befalls people in prison for whatsoever cause, Ibori’s prison service has never deterred any one from paying homage to him in the United Kingdom. There is always an exodus of people to London on regular basis to pay homage and remind him of his good deed, despite serving jail term for those perceived good deeds. In 2007, he imposed Uduaghan on Deltans, hence the monumental failure of the Uduaghan’s government in the affairs of Deltans.

As the 2015 election was coming closer, London became the second home of those seeking for his blessing to emerge as governors. The incumbent Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, David Edevbie, Clement Ofuani, who is currently the Director General of Asaba Capital Development Authority and many others were alleged to have visited him for his blessing to clinch the governorship of the state. But Uduaghan had attempted to break the jinx but the cabals were greater than him.

It was learnt that Ibori actually anointed one of the aspirants then for the position but his decision somehow ran counter to Uduaghan’s choice, hence he decided to thwart the plan by pulling Tony Obuh from the office of Permanent Secretary to the governorship race. The entrance of Obuh into the race shook the over 20 aspirants as many believed that having been anointed by Uduaghan, there was no hope for others. But the turn of events thereafter proved them wrong.

The emergence of the immediate past governor, Emmanuel Uduaghan, in 2007, was known to everyone as the brainwork of Ibori in the state. Against all odds and outcry, he fought all he could to impose Uduaghan on Deltans which he succeeded, the result of which was the dilapidated state of infrastructure in the state. His imposition of Uduaghan on Deltans has been the bane of development in the state since 2007 till date. From 2007 till date, Deltans have never spoken good about Uduaghan because he failed to meet the needs of the people undermining the huge allocation coming to the state from the federation account.

From Delta South where he hails from to Delta Central to North, he has no good public relations before the people of the state. It has been sighing, hissing and cursing all over the state. The cursing and hissing grow when drivers and tricycle riders bump into potholes which could have been worked on and fully completed by his administration. Truly, Uduaghan disappointed the expectation of Deltans because considering his broad promises, he was expected to perform but lo and behold it was a woeful failure.

The present government of Ifeanyi Okowa is also a product of the Ibori’s dynasty in the state. It is a continuation of his influence over the affairs of the state. One thing that links Okowa with Ibori is that he was a beneficiary of Ibori’s government. Okowa was Commissioner for Agriculture and Health before he eventually emerged Secretary to the State Government, an office he was given to placate him following the political game played against his emergence as governor in 2007. Then, he was given the office with a promise from Ibori to wait for his turn after Uduaghan must have finished his eight year rule.

Ibori’s influence has continued to permeate every segment of the state. In June last year, he imposed his daughter, Erhiatake, on the people of his local government, Ethiope West Local Government Area, as member of the State House of Assembly. It was learnt that he made sure that every other person gave way to his daughter’s emergence as the candidate for his Ethiope West constituency.  Though a certain group under the aegis of Concerned Indigenes of Oghara, protested the imposition of his daughter, Erhiatake still emerged as candidate for the constituency. Today, she is representing the constituency in the state house of assembly.

There are also underground insinuations that his daughter might emerge the substantive Speaker of the state assembly. The alleged plot is that the current Speaker, Monday Igbuya, is holding brief for her. It was learnt that the office of the Speaker will be given to his daughter as part of compensation for him as leader and father of Delta State politics.

It is believed in many quarters that there is no cause which Ibori would support in Delta that would not come to fruition as he is seen as a demi-god to the power brokers in the state. Even while in prison, his birthday was celebrated in the state. Also, former Commissioner for Transport, Benson Igbakpa, organized a prayer session for his release from London, a few months ago. In the celebration, dignitaries of Urhobo extraction were in attendance but the celebrant was conspicuously absent.

Even in the selection of Commissioners to head ministries in the state, Ibori is still consulted before decisions are taken on who should be appointed and his list is hardly turned down. Currently, Okowa has appointed only 12 commissioners whereas there are over 20 ministries in the state. A source close to the powers that be said the person to head the Ministry of Finance might likely come from abroad, making the point clear that Ibori will certainly be involved in the selection of these commissioners for the state.

One source said, “rather than being tempered by his years in detention, Ibori has remained the power behind the throne in the state; not only because the outgone governor is his brother, but the present administration is firmly in his control. There is a rumour now that the list of commissioners and other appointments being considered by Senator Okowa included 40 percent of names sent from London. The outgone governor only has about 10 percent. That is to tell you how powerful Ibori still is in this state.”

While the claim of the former governor getting 40 percent of the appointments seemed somewhat exaggerated, there is no doubt that the Ibori’s clique has bounced back strongly in the state. The list of those elected and currently running the government of the state and other appointments have certainly confirm this.

The present State House of Assembly also has a plethora of Ibori’s loyalists from the fourth term Hon Daniel Mayuku, Chairman House Committee on Appropriation to the Speaker, Hon Monday Igbuya, Talib Tebite and Tim Owhefere to greenhorns like Chief Michael Diden, a former Chairman of Warri North Local Government Council and DESOPADEC commissioner; Reuben Izeze, a former student activist, who got his first political appointment under the former governor; Mrs. Orezi Esievo, who was drafted from Shell Petroleum Development Company and appointed a commissioner by the former governor and Toju Abigor among others.

It is against the background of the above scenario that the fate ahead of Ibori and the outgone President is strikingly contrasting. Although he was tamed, the situation on ground in Delta State and with his key allies still occupying prominent positions in the two main political parties, APC and PDP, nobody who truly understands Nigerian politics would want to bet against Ibori getting the last laugh when he finally returns from the London jail.

NNPC to throw account books open for public scrutiny, says Kachikwu

0

The Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, said on Tuesday in Abuja that the corporation would operate an open accounting system that would allow public scrutiny of its books.

This is contained in a statement issued by Mr Ohi Alegbe, Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division of the corporation.

The statement quoted Kachikwu as saying that such a policy would usher in a new dawn of transparency through periodic publications of the corporation’s financial transaction.

He said that the new NNPC of his dream would be a corporation anchored on the foundation of transparency, adding that transparency must be the watchword of every staff.

He urged the staff of the corporation to break away from the old culture and bring creative solutions to the numerous challenges facing the corporation.

The GMD said with the kind of change he had in mind, the staff could not afford to continue with `business as usual` mentality.

He challenged the staff not to obey any directive from him or any superior officer that runs contrary to the rules governing the system.

Kachikwu said that President Muhammadu Buhari would not ask him to do anything shady just as he himself would not ask any staff to carry out any unlawful duty.

“I want transparency. Beginning from next month, I want to be able to publish what the corporation makes.

“I have told the President that as from next week, I will be sending him weekly reports,” he said.

The GMD said the publication would begin with establishing the current financial status of the corporation.

Kachikwu said he would assign auditors to do proper forensic audit with a view to revealing the full state of the corporation.

He promised to revisit old processes that enhanced efficient operations and urged the staff to see themselves as the drivers of the changes required to bring about the new NNPC.

“You are the ones who have been around and who understand the system and so you are the ones who should drive the change,” he said.

The GMD said the change would be anchored on three key issues of people, processes, and profit.

He dismissed reports that he was out to sack 1,000 staff.

“Nothing can be farther from the truth as I needed quality staff to drive the processes and businesses in the new NNPC,’’ he said.

He urged the staff to ensure the success of the Federal Government’s reform agenda for the corporation and the nation’s oil and gas industry.

Buhari Calls For Comprehensive Report On Sale Of NITEL

President Muhammadu Buhari has demanded for a comprehensive report on sale of Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL), and Nigerian Mobile Telecommunication (Mtel), from the Ministry of Communications Technology.

The President made the request after briefing by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Tunji Olaopa in Abuja on Tuesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), recalls that the National Council on Privatisation (NCP), at its meeting of Feb. 27, 2012, approved the privatisation of NITEL and Mtel through “guided liquidation.”

The meeting was presided over by former Vice-President Namadi Sambo.

The preferred bidder of NITEL/Mtel, NATCOM Consortium, on April 2, 2015, completed the payment of the telecommunications assets for 252 million dollars.

Buhari, however, said he was concerned by the continuing protests by former NITEL/Mtel employees and other Nigerians over the manner in which assets of the company were sold.

The president challenged the ministry to work harder to fully develop the revenue-generation potential of Nigeria’s information technology sector.

He also directed the ministry to bring forward for his consideration and approval, all pending proposals for the development of the country’s IT sector which required the approval of the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

“Where you don’t need EXCO approval and you are not in breach of the law and will not lose money, you can go ahead.

“Now that oil costs less and we are contending with its theft, we have to move to areas where we can realize revenue quickly’’, he said.

Buhari welcomed the plan by the ministry to use post offices across the country for IT and financial transactions especially in the rural communities, saying that he was happy to hear that “we are recovering the post offices from rats and rodents.”

The ministry’s presentation dwelled heavily on the potential of the IT sector in boosting the nation’s economy.

According to the permanent secretary, the sector contributes 10 per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product, but could grow to 20 per cent if some proposals by the ministry are approved and implemented.

Tree Of Life Ministry Hosts Women Conference

It was fun filled as members of Tree of Life Gospel ministry – Women Ministry gathered in Nanka, Anambra State on August 12, 2015 to mark this year’s August meeting.

The event started with songs of praise and adoration for divine intervention on their lives and families, and the society in general. A sermon by the General Overseer of the ministry, Dr. Reverend Jerry Dada Obi admonished the women to be good wives to their husbands and good mothers to the children, and good neighbors in their communities.

The high point of the event was the presentation and breaking of kolanut, donation by guests and members.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the national president/chairperson of the Tree of Life Gospel ministry mother’s association, Deaconess Bridget Ezike spoke with 247ureports.com. Alaibe, others dump PDP to escape sledge hammer of EFCC

….TAN hijacks Bayelsa APC, to schemes out Slyva’s faction for the governorship ticket

Facts are beginning to emerge over the recent defection of the former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, (NDDC), Mr. Ndutimi Alaibe, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Col. Sam Inokoba, (rtd) and others to the All Progressives Congress, (APC).

Findings by a socio-political group; Bayelsa for Good Governance, revealed that their decision was aimed at escaping the sledge hammer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC), noting their activities while in office as public/political office holders.

This was contained in a statement signed by its chairman, Mr. Perefini Ebiye and made available to newsmen in Yenagoa.

The statement revealed that the EFCC is beaming its searchlight on the activities of Alaibe as the Director of Finance and Managing Director of NDDC, Senator Lokpobori, as former Chairman of the Senate committee on sports and Col. Inokoba as the former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), Bayelsa state.

According to the statement, the EFCC, in line with President Muhammadu Buhari zero tolerance for corruption is investigating the activities of these set of people while in office and if found culpable may be charged to court.

The allegations against Alaibe, according to our findings include the disappearance of the sum of N19 billion earmarked for the completion of some key NDDC projects which he diverted and used part of it to fund the third term project of former President, Olusegun Obasanjo. In the case of Retired Col. Sam Inokoba, the former Bayelsa State PDP Chairman, he is scheduled to keep a date with the EFCC over the misappropriation of party’s funds, following a petition written by some party stalwarts and made available to the anti-graft agency.
Senator Lokpobiri on his part was alleged to have misappropriated the sum of N5 billion regarded as funds earmarked for the development of key projects in his constituency being the senator representing Bayelsa West senatorial district between 2007 and 2015.

Sensing the danger ahead, the affected politicians decided to defect to the All Progressives Congress, (APC) in order to escape the sledge hammer of the anti-graft agency.

Meanwhile, the impending implosion in APC in Bayelsa State as earlier predicted by political pundits is already creating ripples in the party, as TAN group which is the backed by former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan, is set to dislodge the APC faction led by former governor Sylva in picking up the governorship ticket. The power game and quest as to who will clinch the APC governorship ticket to fly the party’s flag in the December 5governorship election is generating a lot of tension in the state. It is said that almost every one who decamped in last Saturday’s mega rally have governorship ambitions.

According to a reliable source, the APC in Bayelsa will have a huge task in choosing its flag bearer owing to the number of persons within its fold who are nursing governorship ambition. If the party fails to conduct a transparent primaries to pick its candidate, that will automatically affect its chances at the polls.

The source further went to say that with the backing and influence of former First Lady, the TAN group has succeeded in hijacking the party structure from Timipre Sylva, who is regarded as the leader of the party in the state. While the former First Lady through TAN is backing the emergence Senator Heineken Lokpobiri as APC governorship candidate with the choice of Werinipre Seigbarugu as his deputy, the former governor, Timipre Sylva on the other hand is said to be favourably disposed to the candidacy of Nestor Binabor, former acting governor and Speaker of the State House of Assembly. There are also speculations that he is backing Warman Ogoriba for the position of deputy governor.

A third group led by former NDDC Managing Director, Timi Alaibe, is also lobbying the party leadership at the centre to back him to clinch the governorship ticket. Unconfirmed report says he has the tacit support and backing of Bola Tinubu, a key leader and chieftain of the party.

Political observers in Bayelsa argue that the mantle may fall on Alaibe, following his solid connection and wide contact especial with key stakeholders and top leaders of the party at the centre.

Emeakayi’s Open Letter: A Disgrace to Opposition Politics

0

obiano

Our attention has been drawn to the somewhat comic and disappointing search for relevance by Mr. Ken Emeakayi, a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, with his Open Letter released to select journalists at a Press Briefing in Awka on August 17, 2015. In describing Mr. Emeakayi as a member of Anambra state PDP, we are of course only being charitable as it is not even clear if Emeakayi has not been expelled from the party by one or more of the numerous factions of the party currently at each other’s throats.

Emeakayi and his sponsors ought to have known by now that Governor Willie Obiano is too busy to be distracted with the fecal vituperations of attention-seekers who want to beef up their falling profiles by attacking people in leadership positions. Quite naturally, our initial reaction to Emeakayi was not to dignify him with a response. However, for the benefit of some members of the society who might need a little illumination to understand the emptiness of Emeakyi’s public showmanship, we wish to respond as follows –

Local Government System and Administration

Emeakayi must have been seeking comfort in vacuous self-indulgence when he posited that Local Government System in Anambra State had become redundant in Anambra State under the Obiano administration. Pray, does this disillusioned member of a dysfunctional party live in the moon? All the roads, hospitals, schools and water projects going on in Anambra State bear testimony to an all-inclusive development agenda of the APGA government under Chief Willie Obiano. We would have Emeakayi and his fellow hate-mongers know that the characters who are drumming for him behind the scene would not even let the Third Tier of government exist in Anambra State in eight long years of their regime.  And by the way, the jury is still out on what became of all the local government allocations to the state during that period.

On the question of inherited projects from the previous administration, it is obvious that Emeakayi enjoys playing to the gallery. That is possibly the only explanation of his futile effort to sell a lie to Ndi Anambra. It is on record that Governor Willie Obiano rose to power on the promise of continuity. All over Anambra, it is evident that Obiano has kept his promise by continuing all the projects he inherited from his predecessor. For instance, when Obiano commissioned the Nkpor-Amawbia Road he inherited from his predecessor and completed in record time, it attracted criticisms from detractors like Emeakayi who were surprised that the hard working governor of Anambra State had kept his promise. Isn’t it shameful that the same machinery that went on the attack mode over the completion and commissioning of the Nkpor-Amawbia Road project has suddenly turned around to allege that Obiano has abandoned inherited projects? Isn’t this thoughtless type of opposition politics embarrassing to the National Secretariat of the PDP which has so far adopted a dignified, substance-driven approach to engaging the government in power at the center?

APGA Secretariat Building

Chief Emeakayi was obviously scratching for substance when he alleged that Governor Obiano was funding the construction of the secretariat Building of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) from the coffers of the Anambra State government. One would have expected him to show greater knowledge of the way political parties raise funds for projects on account of his presumably long experience in politics but it is apparent that Emeakayi has serious gaps to fill in his learning. Nevertheless, it might be useful to remind him that parties all over the world are funded with donations and APGA is no exception.  As for the wild claim that the APGA National Chairman and Secretary are paid allowances by the government of Anambra State, it would be inappropriate to respond to a mere hearsay. We would advise Emeakyi to reserve such banters for the beer parlour where they belong.

Plan to Appoint Care-taker/Transition Committee

Once again, Emeakayi seems to be dancing in the shadows with this funny sooth-saying. It would be unwise to join issues with him on his purely speculative reverie. Obiano is too busy to waste time anticipating people who have nothing more serious to do than to second-guess him.

On Emeakayi’s other Prayers

It may be necessary to remind Emeakayi that barely one year in office, the Obiano administration emerged tops on the International Public Accounting System (IPSAS) survey of Nigeria’s most transparent and accountable state, achieving over eighty per cent fiscal merit, the highest rating in the South-East zone. An Auditor of international repute and banker per excellence, Governor Willie Obiano’s watchword remains the judicious use of resources.

Need we remind Emeakayi that at a time many states owe arrears of salaries and pensions, Anambra has continued to meet its obligations to the workforce and the society at large? Is it not petty and laughable that rather than applaud Obiano for adroit management of the lean resources of the state in a season of scarcity, Emeakyi has chosen to ridicule the honourable role of the opposition in a healthy democracy by choosing to cry wolf where there is none?

Finally, it is obvious that Emeakayi is either trying to humour himself, or seeking undeserved attention or both in his ill-advised and poorly conceived Open Letter to governor Obiano. However, if his intention was to distract Governor Obiano, his handlers should advise him not to waste his time because the hardworking governor of Anambra State is too focused on his transformational mandate to be distracted.

Signed

Desmond Tutu In Hospital Over Inflammation

20101008-desmond-tutu-thank-you

South African anti-apartheid campaigner and veteran cleric, Desmond Tutu, has been admitted to hospital due to `inflammation’, his daughter said on Tuesday.
This would be the second time in one month the 83-year-old has needed medical treatment.
Tutu was released from hospital earlier this month after being treated for a recurring infection related to the prostate cancer he has been fighting for 18 years.
“Doctors treating inflammation, it’s not recurrence of his previous illness,” Rev. Canon Mpho Tutu was quoted as saying on the Tutu Legacy Foundation’s social media account.
She said that “Series of treatments have had an impact on elasticity of his body and his ability to come back from an illness.”
Tutu, a Nobel peace laureate, retired from public life in 2010 but has kept speaking out in a wide range of issues, including corruption among South Africa’s political elite.

Buhari Won’t Spare Effort To Achieve Greatness- Onu

0

Former governor of old Abia state and one of the national leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chief Ogbonnaya Onu, has revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari and his party are determined to bring the nation back to the path of greatness, saying no sacrifice will be too much to make for this to be realized.

buhari face

The former governor of old Abia state believed that it is important for Nigerians to remember that the generation before them broke the barrier of foreign rule to make the country free, adding that they also worked hard to set free many others in different countries of the continent.

Onu who was speaking as the guest of honour at two books presentation and the 65th birthday anniversary of Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa, in Abuja yeserday, said since May 29th when President Buhari took over the nation set out in a new direction.

He said: “Gradually Nigeria is undergoing a major transformation. We are in the process of rediscovering those values that made us strong in the past, which we unfortunately discarded in the immediate past. As we read our newspapers, listen to the radio and watch the television, the tone of our conversation, the theme of our discussions have changed.

“We now, more than ever before, emphasize honour, integrity and duty in the lives of both the citizens and the country. It is these values that will help us continue successfully on this new journey no matter how rough the road may be or how steep the mountain could be.

“It is these values that will help us build strong institutions that will safeguard the rule of law such that no citizen can be above the law, strengthen our democracy, build a nation of equal opportunities for all, defend human rights and protect the press, civil societies, the weak and the poor. We thank President Buhari for this.”

According to Onu, Buhari administration is a child of the supreme will of the Nigerian people, and it will not rest until it ensures that the votes count and the voter matters in the electoral process.

“Some work has been done, but a lot more needs to be done. I am confident that day in, day out, the APC led Federal Government will work in pursuit of electoral reforms in order to ensure that the vote is the manure that will enrich our soil to enable democracy blossom and flourish.

“It is the duty, the task for our generation, this generation, to build on the achievements of those before us to unite our country, secure our nation, work for peace and prosperity so as to guarantee the happiness of Nigerians. This can be achieved if we tirelessly work to ensure that the right leadership continue to govern our country.” Onu said.

Why PDP Needs Bala Mohammed – By Emma Agu

0

If anyone has been wondering why the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost the last elections, here is one of the major reasons: a house divided against itself cannot stand.   As recent events have shown, just as the party was unable to manage success, it appears woefully incapable of living down defeat. The rift between the workers and the leadership of the party simply goes to show that what we had all along thought was confined to the top echelon of the party indeed permeated its entire organizational fabric. If workers in the party secretariat who are supposed to be custodians of its secrets and the last line of defence have long been drawn in a brawl with the National Working Committee, NWC, how then was the party expected to harness the loyalty and commitment that constituted the minimum requirements for success?

Bala-620x330

The ongoing exchange of verbal missiles between the staff and the party’s NWC is as bad as it can get. If this awkward development is not quickly arrested, the party would naturally degenerate to an object of public ridicule. And with lost credibility, hardly can it be expected to muster sufficient traction to play its opposition role, a situation where the general public will become the ultimate loser. For now, irrespective of party affiliation, it is in the interest of all Nigerians that the PDP quickly puts the ongoing charade to rest and galvanize the intellectual, human and material resources to effectively play its role as the political check on leadership.

The danger of a tepid opposition platform is better imagined than experienced. Imagine a situation where the PDP continues in its self-destructive path, chances are that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-government, as a human institution, could lapse into lethargy since the threat of an alternative platform, if you like, a government in waiting, would have been destroyed. But, that is even the milder of two potential dangers. The more serious scenario is the prospect of Nigeria descending into full blown dictatorship. It will be infantile in the extreme, as some are won’t to do, to dismiss such a possibility, unless one is too naïve to realize that, without a virile and patriotic opposition, an ex-general’s regimental background could overshadow his democratic credentials.

But, if the party must rise to the challenge of its novel opposition role, then installing a new leadership with the credibility and demeanour to command the respect of its members and public acceptance and confidence is a task that must be accomplished with utmost care and dispatch. In doing so, the party might as well avail itself of the advice of the Father of Modern Nigeria, President Olusegun Obasanjo who, in a recent comment, advised against ethnic or regional parties. I can hear some people wondering what I am driving at: it is possible, inadvertently, though, to reduce a national party to a regional one by the actions or inactions of the leadership. By its performance at the last elections, the PDP has literally been reduced to a regional party, with the south east and south-south as its major strongholds. At any rate, when you remove Delta, which has a large Igbo constituency, PDP will be effectively confined to the defunct eastern region of Nigeria! So, even if the PDP were to elect a leader of northern extraction but who lacks the reach, disposition or organizational stature to command respect across the length and breadth of Nigeria, the party stands the danger of being pigeon-holed into a regional entity.

Therefore, the impending special convention of the party provides a rare chance to begin the healing process in all its ramifications. In this respect, Senator Bala Mohammed’s interest in completing the term of Ahmed Muazu as PDP chairman is a welcome development. Bala Mohammed’s entry into the PDP chairmanship race fuels enthusiasm to the extent that, from what we know, he fits the leadership profile that can restore the party’s unity and bounce. Through years as a top civil servant and politician, the former minister of the federal capital territory, FCT, has been able to accumulate politically bankable capital all over Nigeria. And the fact that he was always entrusted with strategic party responsibilities, albeit of an ad hoc nature, demonstrates the confidence reposed in him by the party. Yet, he cannot be said to have been tainted by the corrosive and destabilizing divisions that had become the hallmark of the elected party executives. This is significant because the party needs a unifier, a father figure, a role that the former minister can play very well in spite of the fact that he is still under 60.

Secondly, by his antecedents as a senator and minister, Bala Mohammed carved the image of a nationalist with the vision of a country where every Nigerian could feel at home. It is important here to recall his patriotic action when, at the death of President Umaru Musa Yar’Ardua, against all odds, he galvanized his Unity Forum, group in the Senate to unify in conferring legitimacy on the floundering authority of Goodluck Jonathan. Such gestures are rare in a highly ethicized Nigeria. But the message was not lost on many Nigerians; that a new political ferment was brewing where, with time, in the words of our former National Anthem, Nigerians can be truly committed to a country:

“Where tribe and tongue may differ,

But in brotherhood we stand”.

We saw that in the doctrine of necessity. It also played out in the last presidential elections where a paradigm shift in electoral alliance saw the south west and the north collaborating electorally for the first time to cause a change in government at the federal level. Put succinctly, Bala Mohammed and like-minded fellows have ignited a new political ferment that has engulfed Nigeria for the better. PDP stands to reap immense political capital from the goodwill that Bala Mohammed acquired in the various political stations he has been privileged to occupy.

Perhaps, a third important consideration should address the relationship between the APC-led government and the leadership of the opposition. Here commendation should go to Senator Godswill Akpabio who, even as minority leader on the platform of the PDP, with his colleagues, has pledged the support of the 49-strong PDP membership of the Senate for President Muhammadu Buhari. There is no doubt that Akpabio’s promise of bipartisan support for the President will be richly complemented by Bala Mohammed’s leadership of the PDP. Let the truth be told: PDP cannot reverse its dented image by the gangster method that it has adopted trying to ridicule every step of President Muhammadu Buhari. From feelers, the electorate is not amused by these shenanigans. Let us concede that some of Buhari’s actions are irksome, even downright indefensible; yet, courtesy demands that the opposition should accord him the respect he deserves by speaking truth to authority with some level of decorum.

Herein lies Bala Mohammed’s strongest point in the PDP leadership race; his taciturn demeanour, that ability to drive his point home without sounding abrasive yet, like the well trained boxer, tailors his punches to land on target with destructive effectiveness. Besides, from all indications, the former minister still commands the respect of his former colleagues in the defunct All Nigeria Peoples’ Party, one of the four legacy parties of the APC. We can only appreciate the significance of this point when the role of an opposition party is put in its proper perspective, away from the impression that opposition simply means to frustrate or pull down the ruling party.

No. That is not correct. While opposition parties plan to succeed ruling parties, the former are duty bound, by logic and patriotism, to openly support policies and actions of the government that translate to the greatest good of the greatest number. Incidentally, it takes a man with the maturity, patriotism and humility of Bala Mohammed to soar from the nadir of jaundiced partisan spectacles to this zenith of sublime statesmanship. If there are other interested people of the same hue as Bala Mohammed in the PDP from the north central zone, please let them file out for the competition.

However, I wish to conclude by emphasizing that in the over thirty years that I have known Bala Mohammed, he has left an indelible impression on me as a highly detribalized Nigerian, a result-oriented workaholic, an astute organizer of men and materials, a loyal party man and an unassuming leader who can be trusted to uphold the authority of the Nigerian State, as embodied in President Buhari, without compromising the electoral aspirations of his party.

Few weeks after operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) intercepted $2.1 million dollars in Lagos, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) command of the Agency has arrested a twenty-five (25) year old man with forty-eight million, four hundred and fifty thousand naira (N48,450,000:00). The monetary exhibit was detected during routine motorized surveillance along Abaji Abuja express way. The command also arrested a cannabis dealer with seventy-nine bags of dried weeds that tested positive for cannabis weighing 817kg.

The FCT commander of the NDLEA, Mrs. Obijuru Chinyere said that the twenty-five year old suspect claimed that the money belongs to a bureau de change. “The suspect, John Okafor was on board a commercial bus from Onitsha in Anambra State when N48,450,000:00 was found in a brown carton concealed in a sack. He also had on him eighty-six thousand, five hundred CFA Franc. He claimed that the money belongs to a bureau de change at Onitsha. Chukuka Ugbai was arrested at Bako village in Kwali Area Council following the discovery of his cannabis warehouse” Chinyere stated.

Okafor John in his statement said that he was on official assignment for a bureau de change in Anambra State. “I work for a bureau de change at Onitsha. I was asked to purchase dollars at the foreign exchange market in Abuja with the money. When we got to Abaji, our vehicle was searched and the money was found. That is all I know about” Okafor stated.

It was judgment day for Chukwuka Ugbai who was caught red handed at his residence. In his words, “I can say I was not lucky enough because I do not know how they detected my cannabis warehouse. I sell cannabis to take care of my family and pay my children school fees. The officers found seventy-nine (79) bags of cannabis in my store house. I pray to get out of this problem never to do it again in my life”.

Chairman/Chief Executive of the Agency, Ahmadu Giade called on members of the public to adhere strictly to the provisions of the anti-money laundering act. “The Agency is committed to the fight against illicit drugs and related offences such as money laundering. It is important to comply with the provisions of the act and embrace the cashless policy. The cannabis seizure made at Bako village is part of ongoing drug supply control plan to cut away drugs from the end users. We shall be vigilant to identify any violation of the NDLEA Act relating to drug trafficking and money laundering” Giade stated.

Meanwhile, John Okafor had been transferred to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for further investigation while Chukwuka Ugbai will soon be charged to court for unlawful possession of cannabis.
