What could be best described as an atmosphere of fear, grief and uncertainty has enveloped Ideani Community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State following the discovery of the lifeless bodies of three children inside the residence of a woman popularly identified as an Ezenwaanyi (female traditionalist) in the community.
The horrifying discovery, which has continued to attract reactions from both within and outside the community, reportedly happened at Umuoduba Village, Ideani, where the woman is said to reside.
Although details surrounding the incident remain sketchy, sources within the community disclosed that concerned residents became suspicious after noticing unusual developments around the house and eventually forced their way into one of the rooms through a window, where the bodies of the children were allegedly discovered.
Another child, who was also said to have been found in the building under unclear circumstances as he battles for survival, was reportedly rescued alive and immediately rushed to a hospital for medical attention.
The woman, whose residence also reportedly houses livestock, including pigs and poultry birds, was subsequently taken into custody by operatives of the Ogidi Divisional Police Headquarters, while the remains of the deceased children were evacuated to a mortuary.
Videos currently circulating on social media showed the Divisional Police Officer of the Ogidi Division, accompanied by community leaders, local security personnel and the President-General of the Ideani community, visiting the scene as investigations commenced.
The footage also showed the woman leading the security team around different sections of the compound, including some shrines and residential areas within the premises, while community members watched from a distance.
While speculations have continued to trail the incident, different versions of what might have happened have also emerged on social media.
One social media user claimed that the deceased children belonged to a woman who had left them in the care of their father, after which they later found accommodation in the residence of the woman at the centre of the controversy.
According to his own version of the story, the children allegedly consumed garri after secretly purchasing groundnuts on the night before the tragic incident, only for three of them to be discovered lifeless the following morning. The claim, however, has yet to be verified.
Meanwhile, residents have continued to call on the police and other relevant authorities to conduct thorough investigations and an autopsy to determine the actual cause of death and unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.
As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Police Command had yet to issue any official statement on the matter, while efforts by this reporter, Izunna Okafor, to get the reactions of the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, proved abortive, as he snubbed messages of inquiries from the journalist on the incident.
