Anambra state government has commenced a five day dredging of waterways in Akwa Capital Territory ahead of the perennial flooding that occurs every year.
To this end, over 3,000 buildings are targeted to be saved from flood erosion in the identified areas within the Capital Territory.
Recall that on yearly basis, scores of buildings are submerged while some are washed away by flood there by creating gully erosion in the area ; a development that necessitated the early warning by the state government to those residing in flood prone areas.
Government has also warned against the activities of land grabbers and illegal developers who build on the waterways and flood channels stating that it would not tolerate such illegal activities.
Similarly buildings along the affected areas have already been marked for demolition by the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority ( ACTDA) as enforcements have commenced in earnest.
The project is being embarked on by the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) which includes the dredging and clearing of the Ikenga waterway, which discharges into the Ezu River through Agu Awka, as part of ongoing efforts to improve environmental management and reduce flooding within the capital city.
This action plan which commenced last Saturday is being executed with the use of a swamp buggy and the Authority is dredging the channel and removing all encroachments obstructing the natural flow of water.
According to the MD/ CEO of ACTDA Ozo Ossy Onuko “This intervention will enhance the free discharge of storm water, mitigate flooding, reduce erosion, and protect lives, property, and public infrastructure”
“This initiative aligns with the vision of the Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, to build a livable, prosperous, and smart mega city for all residents”he said.
ACTDA also calls on communities and residents to partner with government by desilting drainages, keeping waterways free of obstructions, reporting encroachments on public spaces and drainage channels, and supporting efforts to maintain a clean and sustainable environment.
