ABAKALIKI, EBONYI STATE — The multi-billion Naira Chuba Okadigbo International Airport in Ebonyi State has allegedly been converted into a venue for religious services following a total collapse in commercial flight operations.
The allegation was raised by Charles Otu, spokesperson for the Ebonyi Civil Society Coalition Group, during a live interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show.
Addressing questions regarding state infrastructure, Otu asserted that the public aviation facility no longer serves its intended purpose and has instead been taken over by a church conducting regular Sunday and midweek services.
According to Otu, the airport currently receives no commercial or private passenger flights, with operations limited almost exclusively to private chartered flights transporting Governor Francis Nwifuru and his wife at public expense.
Describing the development as a failure of public resource management, Otu noted that video evidence showing worship services taking place inside the airport terminal had previously circulated online, underscoring the lack of functional aviation activity at the site.
While the state government previously characterized similar gatherings at the terminal as temporary prayer sessions organized by ministry staff, the latest revelations have renewed widespread criticism over white-elephant infrastructure projects and the management of state funds across Nigeria.
