KUWAIT CITY / BASRA — A hostile drone attack struck Kuwait’s Al-Abdali border crossing with Iraq on Thursday afternoon, inflicting physical damage on the facility and forcing an immediate temporary closure of the primary terrestrial transit link connecting both nations.
Kuwaiti Ministry of Defence spokesman Major General Saud Abdulaziz Al-Otaibi confirmed the strike, stating that while the unmanned aerial vehicles caused material destruction to terminal infrastructure, no casualties were recorded.
The strike marks a direct escalation against civilian and commercial border infrastructure amid wider regional military exchanges across West Asia.
Emergency Clearance and Border Closure
Following the strike at around noon, Kuwaiti Land Forces, alongside specialized explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) units, were immediately deployed to sweep the complex, extinguish fires, and clear drone remnants.
“The inspection and disposal teams affiliated with the Land Force have commenced survey and securing operations, and the removal of drone remnants, in accordance with approved technical procedures, to ensure the site’s safety,” the Kuwaiti Armed Forces announced in an official statement.
Cross-border movement was halted in coordination with Iraqi authorities at the adjacent Safwan border post in Basra Governorate. An Iraqi official confirmed receiving formal notification from the Kuwaiti side that all commercial freight and vehicular passenger traffic through the corridor had been temporarily suspended pending safety clearance.
Escalating Regional Conflict
While the Kuwaiti Ministry of Defence did not explicitly attribute the drone attack to a specific actor, the strike comes as regional tensions escalate sharply following ongoing military exchanges between the United States and Iran.
The Iranian military and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have conducted multiple waves of missile and loitering munition strikes against U.S. military installations and logistics hubs situated across Gulf nations.
The Al-Abdali terminal, located in northern Kuwait’s Al-Jahra Province approximately 125 kilometers from Kuwait City, serves as the main terrestrial artery for bilateral trade between Kuwait and Iraq. Authorities stated that military engineering units remain on high alert as site recovery operations continue.
