IBADAN — Prominent public commentator Shehu Gazali Sadiq has issued a stark warning to Southwest stakeholders, accusing the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) of complicity in the recent incursion of terrorism into the region.
The alarm follows a controversial synchronization of demands between the Islamic group and suspected terrorist factions operating within Oyo State.
Sadiq raised the concerns via an online statement, explicitly linking MURIC’s long-standing, aggressive advocacy for the implementation of Sharia law in the Southwest to the immediate ideological demands of active insurgent groups in the area.
Allegations of Ideological Alignment
In his statement, Sadiq questioned how MURIC could be detached from the unfolding security crisis when its core domestic agenda mirrors the political objectives of regional terrorists.
“I told us that MURIC is complicit in the incursion of terrorism to the Southwest,” Sadiq stated. “MURIC is at the front of demanding for Sharia law in the Southwest. Now that the terrorists in Oyo are demanding for Sharia law in the state, how do we exonerate MURIC from the demand?”
The analyst argued that by consistently mainstreaming demands for Sharia in a predominantly pluralistic socio-religious region like the Southwest, MURIC has inadvertently or deliberately laid the ideological groundwork for armed extremists to exploit.
Calls for Immediate Security Investigation
With security vulnerabilities mounting along the borders of Oyo State, Sadiq forcefully called on traditional, political, and socio-cultural leaders across Yorubaland to launch an immediate, comprehensive probe into the group’s operations before the situation escalates beyond control.
“Yoruba leaders should investigate MURIC before it’s late,” Sadiq warned.

Growing Friction Over Southwest Security
The Southwest region, historically known for religious tolerance and communal cohesion between Christians and Muslims, has faced unprecedented strain due to rising cases of kidnapping, farm invasions, and militant outposts in deep forests.
Critics of MURIC have frequently accused its leadership, headed by Professor Ishaq Akintola, of deploying polarizing rhetoric that threatens this delicate balance. Sadiq’s latest public indictment raises the stakes, moving the critique from mere political disagreement to a direct matter of regional national security.
As of the time of publication, neither the leadership of MURIC nor the Oyo State Government has released an official statement responding to these severe allegations.
