LAGOS, NIGERIA — SEPTEMBER 16, 2026 — Legendary Nollywood actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has passed away at the age of 84.
The announcement was made on Wednesday through an official statement released on social media by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, on behalf of his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, and the family. Describing the iconic actor as “The Lion of Lufodo,” the family expressed gratitude for his long life and notable legacy.
A Master of the Craft and Cultural Titan
Born on July 11, 1942, Olu Jacobs built a career spanning over five decades across stage, television, and cinema. Trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in England, he appeared in international film productions and British television before returning to Nigeria to help shape the emerging Nollywood movie industry.
Renowned for his authoritative screen presence and commanding voice, Jacobs earned widespread acclaim and numerous accolades. He was awarded the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007, received the AMVCA Industry Merit Award in 2013, and was honored as a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.

In his later years, the veteran actor stepped back from public life following a battle with Dementia with Lewy Bodies.
