BENIN CITY, NIGERIA — Operational operatives from the Edo State Police Command have dismantled a notorious kidnapping syndicate, recovering the decomposing remains of victims who were brutally executed despite their traumatized families paying a staggering ₦11 million ransom.
The breakthrough follows an intensive, intelligence-led crackdown launched by tactical units to curb the spike in highway ambushes and rural abductions across the state’s arterial roads.
The Grimy Discovery
The suspects were arrested during a coordinated raid on a hidden forest enclave used as a holding camp by the gang. Upon deep interrogation, the arrested suspects confessed to the crimes and led forensic detectives and medical teams deep into the bush where they had shallowly buried their victims.
The recovery of the bodies has thrown local communities into deep mourning. Relatives of the deceased revealed that they had completely exhausted their life savings and taken out massive loans to meet the ₦11 million ransom demand dictated by the gunmen, operating under the explicit assurance that their loved ones would be released unharmed.
“They collected every single kobo we raised, kept us waiting in suspense for days, and still slaughtered them like animals,” a distraught family representative stated at the police headquarters.
Police Move to Eradicate Highway Gangs
The Edo State Police Command has intensified its tactical field deployments to completely sanitize high-risk axes, particularly the Benin-Auchi expressway and border communities adjacent to neighboring states.
A preliminary inventory of items recovered during the raid includes:
- Military Camouflage: Tactical gear used by the suspects to pose as official law enforcement officers during highway ambushes.
- Lethal Weaponry: Multiple AK-47 rifles, locally fabricated firearms, and dozens of rounds of live ammunition.
- Communication Equipment: Operational mobile phones used to negotiate ransom payments with the victims’ families.
The command stated that the arrested suspects are currently providing vital intelligence regarding their external sponsors, logistics suppliers, and alternative hideouts. The police have vowed to ensure that the entire network faces swift prosecution under the state’s stringent anti-kidnapping legislation, which prescribes the death penalty for capital offenses resulting in the death of a hostage.
