ABUJA, NIGERIA – Armed security personnel, reportedly from the Nigeria Police Force, on Thursday staged a siege at the National Secretariat of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the Wuse 2 district of Abuja.

The intervention occurred shortly after the party concluded its screening session for presidential aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections. The incident has triggered sharp condemnation from party leadership, who have characterized the move as a direct attempt by the federal government to stifle opposition voices and interfere with internal democratic processes.

Disruption of Internal Primaries
Prince Adewole Adebayo, the SDP’s 2023 presidential candidate who had just undergone the screening exercise, alleged that the presence of security forces was an act of political intimidation. In a briefing following the arrival of the operatives, Adebayo accused the Tinubu administration of utilizing state apparatus to frustrate the nomination of credible alternative candidates.

“This is a coordinated effort to disrupt our internal primary process,” Adebayo stated, alleging that the siege was part of a broader plan to destabilize the party’s administrative functions at a critical stage of the electoral cycle.

Broader Security Crackdown
The occupation of the SDP headquarters is the latest in a series of similar interventions across the Federal Capital Territory on Thursday. Earlier in the day, security teams reportedly sealed off the national headquarters of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) and maintained a heavy presence at the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) secretariat following the council’s recent criticism of national economic policies.

Additionally, armed personnel were sighted at Wadata Plaza, the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the party prepared for its National Executive Committee (NEC) deliberations.

Administrative Silence
As of Thursday evening, the Nigeria Police Force has not issued a formal statement clarifying the specific legal grounds or intelligence that necessitated the deployment at the SDP Secretariat. There has been no confirmation of any arrests made during the operation, though party officials reported significant panic and disruption of administrative duties.

The SDP has called on the international community to monitor the growing pressure on opposition platforms, maintaining that the freedom of political parties to conduct internal affairs remains a cornerstone of the nation’s democratic stability.
