MAIDUGURI, NIGERIA — Tragedy struck the Nigerian military in the early hours of Thursday, May 7, 2026, as suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists launched a devastating assault on a forward operational base in the Magumeri Local Government Area of Borno State.
The audacious night-time raid resulted in the deaths of several soldiers and left a high-ranking officer, Lieutenant Colonel Manu, the commanding officer of the formation, with critical injuries.
The Assault
According to high-level security sources, the insurgents arrived in a convoy of at least ten gun trucks, launching a coordinated attack that caught the troops by surprise. Despite a fierce exchange of gunfire, the sheer volume of the assault reportedly overwhelmed the base’s defences.
During the chaos, the terrorists successfully seized several military operational vehicles and carted away a significant cache of arms and ammunition before retreating into the Sambisa forest. Local residents reported hearing heavy explosions and sustained gunfire that lasted for over two hours, sparking fresh panic across the troubled local government area.
A Pattern of Audacious Raids
This latest incident adds to a troubling surge in high-profile attacks on military personnel and formations in the Northeast throughout 2026. In April alone, a Brigadier General and several soldiers were lost during a similar raid in Benisheikh, while a Colonel was killed by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in the Monguno axis.
Military analysts expressed concern over the “alarming regularity” with which commanding officers are being targeted and bases are being sacked. This trend has raised urgent questions regarding intelligence failures and the adequacy of the technical equipment provided to frontline troops to detect and repel night-time incursions.
Military Response
While the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has yet to issue a formal casualty figure, search and rescue operations are reportedly ongoing to account for soldiers who fled into the surrounding bushes during the firefight. The injured Lieutenant Colonel is currently receiving intensive medical treatment at a military facility in Maiduguri.
The Borno State Government has expressed its condolences to the families of the fallen heroes, even as it urged the Federal Government to intensify aerial surveillance and provide more advanced tracking technology to the Theatre Command of Operation Hadin Kai.
As the nation mourns yet another set of casualties in the decade-long insurgency, the pressure mounts on the military high command to transition from defensive posturing to a more proactive strategy that can effectively secure its own formations from such devastating raids.
