ABUJA — There is a widening chasm in Nigeria today that no amount of “Renewed Hope” rhetoric can bridge: the gap between a President untouched by the economic carnage he unleashed and the 200 million citizens currently drowning in it.
While President Bola Tinubu operates from the insulated comfort of the Aso Rock Villa—shielded by taxpayer-funded luxuries and a ₦135 billion litigation war chest—the Nigerians he was sworn to protect have seen their lives dismantled by a series of reckless, unbuffered policy shocks.
The Architect of Agony
From his first moments in office, the President’s “Subsidy is Gone” declaration set off a chain reaction that has transformed Nigeria into a survivalist wasteland. By his own hand, fuel moved from ₦185 to a soul-crushing ₦1,000+, yet the administration remains pathologically incapable of admitting it miscalculated.
Instead of taking responsibility for the failed execution of his “reforms,” the President has watched with chilling detachment as the middle class disappeared. To the man in the motor park or the mother in the market, the message is clear: the administration is willing to sacrifice the people’s present for a “tomorrow” that the political elite have already pre-purchased for themselves.
Untouched and Unapologetic
The most galling aspect for many is the sheer lack of shared sacrifice. While Nigerians are told that “sacrifices” are the only way forward, there has been no corresponding belt-tightening at the top.
- The Disconnect: While families skip meals to pay for ₦1,500-per-litre fuel, the government continues to fund a bloated bureaucracy and multi-billion naira renovations.
- The Blame Game: When confronted with the “receipts” of suffering, the administration’s defenders resort to “economic grammar,” dismissing the lived experience of the masses as “impatience” or “inherited problems.”
The Verdict of the Streets
May 2023 was only three years ago, but Tinubu’s policies have aged a generation of Nigerians by decades. The tragedy isn’t just that the economy failed; it’s that the man who broke it seems entirely unbothered by the pieces. For a leader so insulated from the consequences of his own decisions, “Renewed Hope” has become nothing more than a cruel irony—a roadmap to a despair that he will never have to feel.
