ABUJA, Nigeria — Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal, has launched a blistering verbal assault on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing him as neither a politician nor a statesman, but rather a “greedy roguish capone and plunderer.”

The former cabinet official accused the current administration of steering Nigeria toward systematic elite plunder, arguing that democratic institutions are being subordinated to private enrichment and political patronage.

Allegations of Predatory Governance and Institutional Decay

In an outspoken critique of the federal executive, the former SGF characterized the administration’s trajectory as an organized departure from constitutional governance:

  • Degeneration of the Presidency: Lawal asserted that Nigeria is confronting an unprecedented degeneration of the highest office into an instrument for elite capture, where public wealth is converted into private privilege.
  • Weaponization of State Machinery: He alleged that critical national institutions have been reduced to political weapons, leaving ordinary citizens as collateral damage amid worsening socio-economic conditions.
  • Organized Criminality in Constitutional Robes: Describing the administration’s style of leadership as predatory, Lawal warned that when governance operates on extraction and personal interest, democratic processes risk becoming an empty ritual.

Call for Constitutional Change Ahead of 2027

Framing his description of the president as a “warning siren” for the country, the former SGF called on Nigerians to organize for structural political renewal:

  • Reclaiming the Republic: Lawal maintained that the only sustainable path forward is a peaceful, constitutional, and electoral revolution to reclaim the state from political actors who treat public office as private estate.
  • Deepening Opposition Stance: Lawal’s latest remarks mark a further hardening of his opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) administration, following his prior fallout with the party over leadership choices and policy directions.

Neither the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy nor spokespersons for the All Progressives Congress (APC) have issued a formal response to the former SGF’s latest statements.
