UYO, AKWA IBOM – The political landscape of Akwa Ibom North-West has been jolted by a high-profile defection that sets the stage for a dramatic showdown in the 2027 general elections.
A former close aide to the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has officially dumped the ruling party to join the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The move is not merely a change of allegiance but a direct declaration of war, as he seeks to unseat his former boss for the Akwa Ibom North-West (Ikot Ekpene) Senatorial District seat.
The Break of a Political Union
The defection marks a significant fracture in the political machinery of Senator Akpabio, often referred to as the “Grand Commander” of Akwa Ibom politics. The former aide, whose departure was made public on May 6, 2026, cited the need for “fresh representation” and a departure from the “old guard” as his primary motivations for the move.
Speaking to supporters during a formal reception hosted by the NDC leadership in Uyo, the aspirant emphasized that his decision was born out of a desire to provide a more inclusive and grassroots-oriented leadership for the district. “The time has come for a new vision that prioritizes the people over personal political empires,” he stated.
A Shifting Tide in Ikot Ekpene
The National Democratic Congress (NDC), which has been gaining momentum as a formidable third force in the state, welcomed the defection as a “victory for democracy.” State party leaders believe that the former aide’s intimate knowledge of Akpabio’s political strategies will give the NDC a distinct advantage in the upcoming polls.
Political analysts suggest that this rivalry will be one of the most watched contests in the 2027 cycle. While Akpabio remains a political titan with a massive national profile, the emergence of a “homegrown” challenger who once walked the inner corridors of his administration presents a unique threat to his senatorial longevity.
The Road to 2027
As the 2027 election season begins to simmer, the Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District is expected to become a central battleground. For Akpabio, the challenge is maintaining his grip on his home base while managing the heavy responsibilities of the Senate Presidency. For his former protégé, the goal is to prove that the student is ready to surpass the master.
The Senate President’s camp has yet to issue a formal reaction to the defection, but sources close to the APC leadership in the state maintain that they are “unfazed” by the development.
