KADUNA, NIGERIA — The Federal High Court in Kaduna has granted former Governor Nasir El-Rufai permission to seek medical treatment in Abuja, specifically for dental and eye care.
The ruling was delivered on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, following a request by the former governor’s legal team. While the court approved the medical leave, it specified that all movements and hospital visits must be conducted under the strict supervision of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
Strict Supervision Mandated
J. Okor Odey, the ICPC’s head of media and public communications, confirmed the development in a statement, noting that the commission will ensure full compliance with the court’s directive. Under the terms of the agreement, El-Rufai will be permitted to visit specialized clinics in the Federal Capital Territory, but he must remain under guard to ensure he returns to face ongoing proceedings.
The Legal Background
The former governor is currently facing a 10-count charge related to allegations of money laundering and the conversion of public funds. El-Rufai has maintained his innocence, pleading not guilty to all charges.
This medical concession comes at a critical stage in the trial, as legal teams on both sides prepare for the next round of evidence presentation. The court has emphasized that while the defendant’s health is a priority, the judicial process must remain uninterrupted and secure.
Further hearings on the substantive case are expected to resume once the scheduled medical treatments are concluded.
