ABUJA, Nigeria — Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, National Chairman of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), has warned that President Bola Tinubu’s “harsh” economic policies and his total detachment from the resulting suffering will ensure his defeat in the 2027 elections.

Speaking on Monday, Baba-Ahmed criticised the administration for being “genuinely isolated” from the reality of millions of Nigerians who are being crushed by the government’s fiscal decisions. He noted that while the President demands applause, the citizens are witnessing unprecedented poverty and a lack of accountability.

“When a president tells citizens who question his record to ‘get new glasses’ or calls them ‘biased beyond the polls,’ it’s a red flag,” Baba-Ahmed said. “That disconnect is exactly why we are confident President Tinubu will be defeated.”

The PRP chairman, who resigned his role as a Special Adviser within the administration a year ago, argued that the “harsh” reforms—including the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira—have been implemented without adequate social safety nets, leaving the most vulnerable Nigerians to bear the brunt. He added that the advice reaching the Presidential Villa appears to exist in a “different world” from the hunger and insecurity on the ground.

Baba-Ahmed concluded that if the current trajectory continues, the President will be judged by history for prioritising political scheming over the urgent economic relief Nigerians desperately need.
