With both events drawing large crowds, dignitaries, and heavy security details to the same stretch of road connecting Omagwa to Ubima, security personnel barricaded sections of the route. According to reporting from the scene, part of the road nonetheless remained open, allowing some traffic to pass through even as movement in the immediate vicinity of both events was tightly controlled.
The burial drew a notable roll call of national political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other ADC leaders, reflecting Amaechi’s continued standing as a prominent opposition-aligned figure and former Minister of Transportation. Amaechi served as Rivers State Governor from 2007 to 2015, succeeded by Wike, whose own rise to national prominence — first as governor and now as FCT Minister under President Bola Tinubu — has been shadowed for over a decade by an often-bitter rivalry with his predecessor.
The Allegation

On Friday, Rivers State ADC Publicity Secretary Chizi Enyi publicly alleged that Wike had arranged the Omagwa reception in coordination with LGA Chairman Wobodo specifically to obstruct movement toward Ubima. “The essence of the reception tomorrow at Omagwa is to shutdown the access road leading to Ubima, the home town of HE. Rotimi Amaechi,” Enyi said, adding defiantly that the burial would proceed “no matter what.”
Once the barricades went up Saturday, Enyi escalated the claim further, alleging in a video statement that police had actively assisted Wike’s side in the blockage. “The Nigerian Police have helped Wike to block a Section of the Omagwa road in Rivers State and this is major road leading to Ubima, for the burial of Rotimi Amaechi’s Late Mother,” Enyi said, describing the resulting congestion as a significant obstacle for mourners and motorists trying to reach the funeral.

What remains contested is the characterization of why that happened.
Enyi’s account frames the blockage as a deliberate, coordinated act by Wike and the Ikwerre LGA administration to hamper the Amaechi family’s burial — a serious political accusation that, if true, would represent a striking abuse of security resources against a private family occasion. An alternative, more neutral reading offered in other reporting from the scene is that the barricading reflected standard security management for two large, simultaneous gatherings of senior political figures in close geographic proximity, a routine precaution when VIP security details converge — with part of the road kept open rather than fully shut.
Neither Wike, his office, nor the Nigeria Police Force had issued a public response to Enyi’s specific allegation as of this report. The ADC’s claim of an outright conspiracy between Wike and Wobodo to schedule the reception as a disruption tactic likewise remains an accusation rather than an established fact, resting on what Enyi described as “credible information” the party said it had received, without further public evidence disclosed.
