ABUJA, Nigeria — Social media was set ablaze on Monday following reports alleging a direct sibling connection between Dr. Abiodun Essiet, a Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu, and Adeyinka Grandson, the notorious “Igbo-hater” currently jailed in the UK for racial incitement.

Abiodun Essiet (the senior special assistant to Bola Tinubu, on Community Engagement) is the sister to Adeyinka Grandson, the Yoruba Nation agitator who was jailed in the UK for incitement against Igbos.

The claim suggests that Dr. Essiet, who serves as the SSA to the President on Community Engagement, is the sister of Adeyinka Shoyemi (popularly known as Adeyinka Grandson). Shoyemi gained infamy for his virulent anti-Igbo rhetoric and was sentenced to four and a half years in a London prison in 2022 after being found guilty of inciting racial hatred.

The allegation has sparked a heated debate regarding the vetting process for presidential aides. Critics have pointed to the stark contrast between Dr. Essiet’s official role—which focuses on peacebuilding and grassroots engagement—and the divisive, hate-filled campaigns of her alleged brother, who frequently used his platform to attack the Igbo ethnic group.

While both individuals share roots in Ogun State, the Presidency has not yet issued an official statement to confirm or deny the familial link. Dr. Essiet has previously been recognized for her public service, recently receiving a traditional title in Nasarawa State for her work in mediating community conflicts.

As the report continues to gain traction, many are calling for transparency to ensure that the administration’s efforts toward national unity are not undermined by associations with figures convicted of promoting ethnic discord.
