Acute Shortage Of Academic Staff Hit College Of Education, Akwanga,Others

Feelers within the College of Education, Akwanga has disclosed that the major challenge that cripple academic activities remains inadequate teaching staff.

This compelled the Institution to hired and engaged 172 teaching staff, available record of the Fact-finding committee into the activities of the College of Education,Akwanga revealed that the Institution from October 2014 to October 2017 indicates that the College has a total of 798 staff.

It was unfolded that the hired and engaged staff especially graduates are paid N20,000 allowances while holders of National Certificate of Education and Diploma are paid N15,000 and school leavers were given N10,000.

Out of the 798 only 235 are teaching staff and 563 are non-teaching staff while the hired and engaged staff are on fixed allowances.

An insider who pleaded anonymity said besides other pressing issues like lack of sufficient hostel accommodation and portable drinking water are the second need of the Institution.

It could be recalled that the State government under the outgoing administration even with the pronouncement that Tertiary Institutions are given autonomy to operate,the three Tertiary Institutions namely
College of Education, Akwanga,College of Agriculture, Lafia and Nasarawa State Polytechnic,Lafia no autonomy exist.

On the issue of hostel accommodation, impeccable source said students are taxed multiple accommodation charged by the management of the school.

The Provost,College of Education,Dr.Rebbeca Isaac Umaru debunked the allegation that the Institution did not collect double accomodation fees from students, describing it as a mere imagination by wailers.

She further debunked the allegation that she was given colossal amount of money to hired students to disrupt the ongoing strike embarked by Joint Union of Nasarawa State Tertiary Institutions.

“I had this from you and you must tell me who told you that
I was given money by the state government to mobilize students to protest against the strike embarked by JUNSTI”.

Besides,my relationship with College of Education Academic Staff Union is cordial ,asked them I persuaded them to end the strike and they refused.

The Provost also debunked grapevine going round that the Institution is operating fifteen bank accounts even with the introduction of Treasury Single Account.

“In the past five years,the College is operating fifteen bank accounts but currently we have only five bank account”she stated.

The Provost declined comment on the issues at stake over foreign service by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund where some staff are acussing Dr.Rebbeca Isaac Umaru of conniving with TETFUND officials to short change selected beneficiaries from benefiting from TETFUND gesture.

“I would not comment on that delicate issues,if you need any information about TETFUND we have our desk officer, Benbella Madaki who is in position to answer that”.
