Some traditional rulers of Igbo extraction in the 19 states of the North plus the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT) have cautioned politicians in the country against hate speeches which are capable of affecting adversely, the unity and oneness of the country, even as they declared total support for INEC on the use of Card Reder

The rulers who operate under the umbrella name of Association of Ndi Ezes In the 19 Northern states and Abuja, rose from their two days meeting  at the Liberty Hotel, Kubwa, Abuja, last Sunday, with a communiqué which emphasized the need for politicians to be very careful with their utterances, especially in this period of electioneering.

In the communiqué signed by Eze Udo, Dr Uche Egenti and Eze Udo Silas Chukwu Ajah, the association’s  President and Secretary respectively, the rulers also canvassed support for the use of the Permanent Voters Cards[PVCs] and the Card Reader, for the March 28 and April 11 elections.

It read, “we, Ndieze Udos, being the grass root leaders of Ibos in Diaspora, should be prayerful, patriotic and pragmatic in our utterances, decisions and actions”. It added that “the imbalance meted on the Ibos in terms of political appointments, from1999 that democracy evolved in Nigeria, is not only inhumane but ungodly, as it is unconstitutional”.

It also pointed out that the concept of an Igbo man not being in the Security Council in the modern day Nigeria, is unacceptable”, adding that “the drum beat of war that is going around the Nigerian nation, is not acceptable and we plead to all those that are investing in bombs to reinvest in brains and ask the Ibo man of the ripples effects in the past civil war because we the Ibos are not ready to go to war again”.

The rulers asserted, through their communiqué, that “we insist that PVC[Permanent Voters Card] be used to lend credibility to the election” and that “Card readers Machine should be used for decency as we can not afford to be type writer repairers in the modern days of computers”.

They also said that “all party Youth Leaders ,Religious Leaders and security Officers should sign the peace pact/ accord”.

Speaking to with newsmen after the meeting, President of the association, Dr Egenti, said there were over 88 Eze Udos from different states and local governments in the 19 states of the Northern Nigeria and Abuja, who attended the meeting.

He added that the concern of the association is to see that this year’s general election goes smoothly, without any rancor. “ We are all out to support whatever will make these elections peaceful, credible, transparent, free and fair. This is the reason we have thrown our weight behind the clamour by the overwhelming majority of Nigerian people, that both the PVC and Card Reader should be used for the conduct of these elections”.

On those who are opposed to the use of PVC and Card reader, Egenti said, “such persons must have sinister motive. We can not continue to be made a laughing stock among the committee of nations because of the way we have conducted elections here since 1999. This time around, we need to join the civilized World in doing what is proper. These elections must be conducted in a  credible, free and fair manner. Anything outside that is unacceptable to us”.

He also warned politicians, especially those of Igbo extraction, to be careful about their choice of words when they speak. “We don’t want anything that will endanger the lifes of our people, especially here in the North, where they reside. We are not going to fight anybody’s war for him. Ndigbo have suffered enough in this country”, he said.
