Sir,

The incumbent governor of Abia State – Chief T.A Orji has in several occasions promised to hand over power to an elected governor of Ukwa Ngwa extraction. Upon this promise, many politicians of Ukwa Ngwa extraction have been indicating their interest to context the seat of Abia State Governor come 2015. It is important to make clear that the governor’s promise to hand over power to Ukwa region of the state does not stop politicians from other parts of the state from contesting the seat of Abia Governor come 2015. This makes it absolutely imperative the Ukwa people to put their house in order. The governor’s promise alone cannot guarantee victory at polls.

The need for Ukwa Ngwa people to unite has become even more imperative now that the governor declared on 1ST July 2014 during the swearing in ceremony of the newly appointed care-taker committee chairman for the 17 Local Government Area of the State tend to have excluded some parts of Ngwa Land from the race. The governor made it categorically clear that power will move to Abia South Senatorial Zone. Thus excluding Isiala Ngwa South and North L.G.As as well as Osisioma Ngwa that belongs to Abia Central Senatorial Zone. This declaration by the governor, coupled with the announcement by P.D.P vice chairman has “put a sword” among the Ukwa Ngwa people. Ngwa politicians from Abia Central Senatorial Zone who are interested in race are not comfortable with the announcement and the position of the governor on the issue of Ukwa Ngwa Governor. This State of affairs if not properly handled would divide Ukwa Ngwa, and whenever a house is divided against itself failure becomes eminent.

In view of the foregoing, we the people of Ngwa and Ukwa should ask ourselves this important question “what shall we do to save ourselves from political slavery in a state where we constitute the majority of the population.

Before an attempt can be made to proffer solutions to this problems facing Ukwa Ngwa (politically), the following facts should be noted:

  1. Power is not giving for asking, it must be struggled for.
  2. Ukwa Ngwa people are not the only people struggling for Governorship position in Abia State come 2015.
  3. In politics, there is only permanent interest: no permanent friend, no permanent enemy.
  4. Governor’s promise of power shift to Ukwa Ngwa is not enough to give Ukwa Ngwa man the seat of governor come 2015.
  5. Divided we fell in the past, and shall fall again if we do not unite.
  6. The interest of Ngwa Land should supersede party loyalty and every other consideration, if an Ukwa Ngwa must emerge Abia governor come 2015.

In view of the above facts, I believe the following steps should be taken to ensure the success of Ukwa-Ngwa in 2015 Guber-Election.

  1. Ukwa Ngwa elders and leaders of thought should summon a meeting of all aspirants of Ukwa Ngwa extraction to avoid many candidates emerging from Ukwa Ngwa region for the seat of Governor Come 2015. This is very important because multiplicity of candidates from Ukwa Ngwa has remained blame to our political success over the years. If our politicians can be made to understand that the more the number of candidates from Ukwa region, the less our chances of becoming the governor of the state, I strongly believe they will see the need for compromise.

  1. Ngwa people should check the activities of self-centered Ngwa politicians who will work for aspirants from other regions. These people will present themselves to us as aspirants, while they are allies of candidates from other regions. Their aim has always been to divide the votes of Ukwa Ngwa people so that the votes of their compradors’ will remain intact. These people will pick tickets of those political parties that will never win any election. They are enemies of Ngwa Land.

  1. There should be a formidable political youth forum in Ngwa. Such an organization should include able bodied Youngman and women from the nook and crannies of Ngwa and Ukwa. The youth organization should be instrumental in sensitizing Ngwa people on the need for total support of Ngwa man to become the governor come 2015.

  1. There should be sound political education, and Ngwa people learn to vote and defend their votes.

  1. Since opposition has little or no power, and cannot influence outcome in Nigerian politics, all efforts should be made to ensure that an Ukwa Ngwa wins P.D.P governorship primaries.

I believe that these measures, if taken timely, will lead to the emergence of Ukwa Ngwa man as governor come 2015.
