I Am A Victim Of Terror – By Abdulrazaq O Hamzat

SSS RAID BOKO HARAM BEHIND APO PIX 15 APO BLOOD (800x600)

“One fact that must sink in our memory is this,Terrorism has no

friend, it is an enemy of all. Terrorists are no friends to anyone,

they could kill anyone. They could kill their parents, may kill their

friends and could even kill themselves. Live has no meaning to them,

they are enemies of all, including to themselves. In fact, they are

enemies of live.”

When ever a bomb explode in any part of Nigeria, it is more like a

blast in my heart. It is usually disheartening and regrettable that

such an endless act of wickedness could be taking place in our dear

However, anytime I read reports of any explosion, I feel the effect of

such blast in my heart. It is usually as if the bombing took place

right inside of me. I feel pain and unending sorry.

In recent times, the occurrences of such explosion had gone out of

proportion. From Jos to Borno, Adamawa to Yobe,Gombe to kaduna and

even Abuja to Lagos. Bomb blast could occur in any part of Nigeria as

we speak and anyone could be victim.

According to Carsten Bockstette, George C. Marshall of Center for

European Security Studies. Terrorism is defined as political violence

in an asymmetrical conflict that is designed to induce terror and

psychic fear (sometimes indiscriminate) through the violent

victimization and destruction of noncombatant targets (sometimes

iconic symbols). Such acts are meant to send a message from an illicit

clandestine organization.

If this definition could be considered, I could say I am already a

victim of terror since I have been terrorized and at the moment,I am

scared for myself and my fellow country men who are likely to be

victim of further attacks. I am scared because my fellow humans are

dying, fellow Nigerians have been affected, women and children have

been lost, Muslim and Christians are not safe and even northerners and

southerners are not left out, who is left unaffected? I couldn’t see

In just one blast, countless of lives are lost, properties worth

millions are destroyed, hope’s are dashed, dreams are shattered and

bitterness plus endless grieve are ensured. Loved one’s are gone, able

are turned disabled, children lost their parents and parents also lost

their children.

Even right now, I can still hear the crying voice of the dying victims

and the grief of their families in my heart. Indeed, I am a victim of

While we are crying, grieving and traumatized by such ugly experience

in our national life, some are acquiring billions under the guise of

security, while others are laughing, making calculations of the next

political agenda. To them, it is all about politics and making money.

The same people claim to be protecting the citizens, but when bomb

explode and people are lost, they are the first to climb the podium

dancing azonto while campaigning for next election. So unfortunate I

must confess.

Most importantly, While we express our grieve on our social media

pages seeking to get reasonable response from the authorities to

prevent further lost, their political foot soldiers waste no time in

bombing us even on the social media. To them, every call to reason is

unwanted, every different opinion must be attacked and every sorrowful

expression must be mocked.

Therefore, the dead are recklessly mocked and blamed for their death,

their grieving friends and families are made a laughing stock

carelessly, while our national sorrow is added with insult and bitter

words capable of making every sane mind wonder if those who spite

these mockery in the face of death and such DE-humanizing conditions

are also humans.

To further establish the fact that these terror are closer to us than

we think, the recent bomb blast which occurred in Gombe State happened

right in front of my friends house, their building was seriously

affected. We ought to praised the almighty because their was no one at

home during the suicide mission.

However, a gallant Nigerian Soldier who himself had been complaining

about the attitude of the authorities was lost in the blast. May his

soul rest in peace.

In view of this recent development, we must all understand one thing,

the next victim of bomb blast could be you, it could be me, it could

be anybody. Therefore, If we fail to reason like the next target

feeling we are safe in our room while mocking others, we may be

affected and be the next to be mocked.

If we fail to stand on the path of truth, we may never get justice

when we are affected. If we fail to desist from mocking the victims,

the same people who mocked others with us may be the same to mock us.

Those who died in the latest Abuja bomb blast in Emmab plaza never

believed it could happen in their vicinity (Wuse II). To them, it

could only happen in the outskirt of Abuja. Some of them might have

argued in favor of the oppressors, some probably mocked the victims of

Nyanyan blast on the social media while supporting their political

choices, yet today, they are also victims

Let me restate that, One fact that must sink in our memory is

this,Terrorism has no friend, it is an enemy of all. Terrorists are no

friends to anyone, they could kill anyone. They could kill their

parents, may kill their friends and could even kill themselves. Live

has no meaning to them, they are enemies of all, including to

themselves. In fact, they are enemies of live.

Although, corruption has been aiding terrorism in Nigeria in no small

way, however, the greatest support terrorism enjoy in this part of the

world is the undue politicization of terror by the ruling government,

which couldn’t only set the country ablaze, but could also breeds a

very dangerous omen which if not discontinued could pitch our citizens

against each other.

A situation where the rulling political party release press statements

blaming the opposition party for every bomb blast that exploded

without any concrete evidence to back up such claim is not only an

unforgivable sin,but a crime that must be properly documented in

history and adequately punished in due time. The officers releasing

such statement must be well documented in case anything happens, they

must be held responsible.

It is my believe that, while many are needed to aid a cause, one man

can drive a dream to fruition. South Africa needed one man (Nelson

Mandella) to end Apartheid. I am of the opinion that, If only one man

died in any blast, probably, it could the man destined to accomplish a

great task for Nigeria. If Nelson Mandella had died in a blast before

South Africa was freed of Apartied, who would have ended Apartied? But

in our case, not one man is lost in our countless blasts, countless

are dying daily right in front of us and yet, we mock them under the

guise of gaining political advantage.

Similarly, 6 suspects arrested in connection with the attempt to bomb

winners chapel church in owerri, Imo state were said to have been

released on bail.

According to the police, the 6 suspects comprise one Nigerian, two

Tanzanian, one American and two Ugandans. It was reported on page 43

of leadership newspaper on June 26th,2014.

It is my concern that, If suspects who were arrested in the scene were

released on bail simply because they are not northern, yet, over 483

northerners who were simply traveling in a bus were still held captive

as suspects, how can such absurdity be justified?

It should be recalled that, as a result of the attempted bomb blast in

a church, northerners in Imo state were asked to appear for profiling

and documentation, which was a clear attempt at stigmatizing them as

terrorists. Yet, those suspects caught in the scene were left to walk

free simply because they were not northerners. This is a very bad

I am of the opinion that, if such impression is allowed to spread

among the northern population, I fear for my southern brothers and

sisters living in the north, as they may equally face similar stigma

and even more.

The authorities must act fast to avoid setting the country ablaze.

Though, people can be patient, but not for too long when they are

pushed to the wall.

We must do justice even to our enemies.

… says Okorocha is a deceit
Socialite and son of late jurist, Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, Charles (Charly Boy) Oputa Thursday explained his reason for storming out of a colloquium organized in honour of his late father by the Imo State government.
Charley Boy had on Wednesday evening suddenly stormed out of tributes event held at the newly built International Conference Centre in Owerri,
Speaking with some journalists in Owerri, Charley Boy accused Governor Rochas Okorocha of trying to use his father’s burial to score cheap political point, describing him as a deceit.
He said the government held a colloquium in honour of his late father and that despite his earlier warning that the burial should not be politicized, Governor Okorocha gathered all the members of his political party and wanted to turn the event into an APC rally.
The event, tagged Day of Tributes for Late Oputa, which saw Governor Rochas Okorocha, his deputy, Eze Madumere; Senator Chris Ngige; national chairman of the All Progressives Congress,APC, Odigie Oyegun, former deputy governor of Imo State, Dr. Douglas Acholonu, and many dignitaries present.

Trouble however started that Wednesday evening when the master of the ceremony announced that the next person to speak would be the national chairman of APC, Oyegun.
No sooner had the APC boss mounted the rostrum than the angry Charley Boy fumed about how his father’s burial was being turned into APC event.
He suddenly rose from his seat and stormed out of the event taking his siblings and family members along.

Senate Probes Sen. Oluremi Tinubu Over Comments On Its Performance

The senate on yesterday directed its committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions to investigate Senator Oluremi Tinubu, over her alleged criticisms of the Upper Chamber and its leadership in the recent comments she allegedly made in the media.

The action was sequel to a motion raised by the Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, under Order 43 (Privileges) of the Senate Standing Orders (2011, as amended).

Ndoma – Egba had drawn the attention of his colleagues to some newspaper publications on the interview granted by Tinubu, where she reportedly condemned what she described as the “rot” in the Senate.

The senator, who represents Lagos Central Senatorial District, had allegedly said that the actions of the Senate leadership was always sympathetic to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led executive arm of government.

Ndoma-Egba said, “I would have brought this matter on the first day of our resumption but for respect for the memory of our departed colleague, Senator Dahiru Awaisu Kuta.

“Today, therefore, is my earliest opportunity to raise it and that is what I raise this matter of privilege.

“There’s a story carried in Thisday of June 5, 2014 attributed to a distinguished colleague of ours, Senator Oluremi Tinubu and the headline is this: Activities in the Senate are depressing and I will read with your kind permission.

“Part of the story reads, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, representing Lagos Central Senatorial District took a swipe at the leadership of the Senate, accusing it of poor performance.

“Tinubu, at a media parley, to mark her third anniversary in the Senate said activities in the Upper legislative chamber were depressing because its leadership had failed to address a lot of pressing national issues for partisan reasons.

“She accused the Senate leadership of pandering to the wishes of the executive arm of government which is led by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). I will just stop here.

“There’s another story in the Daily Trust of Monday, June 9, 2014, again attributed to Senator Oluremi Tinubu, which is titled, “Why I may not return to the Senate in 2015” and with your kind permission, I may just read a little of it.

“Wife of the former Lagos State Governor, Oluremi Tinubu said she may not return to the Senate next year if the rot in the upper chamber persists…Mrs. Tinubu said she’s depressed with the various activities that go on in the Senate…”

“Mr. President, Distinguished Colleagues, as I said before,  I’m a Senator first and foremost and by the grace of my colleagues, a member of the leadership of the Senate and to the best of my knowledge, Senator Tinubu has never raised any concern with me or with the leadership on the activities of the Senate.

“I think it is most unkind, it is most uncharitable for a distinguished Senator who has the opportunity of raising concerns with her colleagues, not doing so and going straight to the media to play to the gallery.

“So, I object very, very seriously to the comments made by Senator Tinubu and I want to submit that my privilege, as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has been breached by the said Senator.”

Ndoma – Egba then laid the newspapers before the Senate as evidence.

Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the session referred the matter to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions chaired by Senator Ayo Akinyelure, a Labour Party member, representing Ondo Central.

Ekweremadu said, “this matter is referred to the committee so that they can have Senator Tinubu present her own side of the story and if possible, invite the newspapers which published the stories.”

He mandated the committee to submit its report in two weeks to the Senate for consideration.

Credibility Of Ekiti Poll Divides Senate

The Senate chambers on Thursday experienced a rowdy session for several minutes as senators engaged in altercation over the credibility of June 21, 2014 gubernatorial election in Ekiti State.

Trouble started when the chairman of the Senate Committee on Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Senator Andy Uba, who relied on Order 43 of the Senate Standing Order, commended the electoral umpire for conducting the most credible election in the country.

Uba, a representative of the Anambra South Senatorial District, said that the conduct of the election by INEC was a departure from previous exercises in the country that were marred by irregularities.

He further commended the people and the government of Ekiti State for the peaceful conduct of the election that led to the defeat of the incumbent governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, of the All Progressives Congress (APC) by Ayo Fayose of the PDP.

He also commended the security agencies for ensuring adequate security during and after the election, and urged all the relevant stakeholders that contributed to the success of the polls to carry on with the same spirit in subsequent elections.

This accolade, however, did not go down well with Senator Babafemi Ojudu, who represents Ekiti Central Senatorial District on the platform of the APC.

Ojudu, while also relying on the same Order 43 of the Senate Standing Order, alleged that Uba’s younger brother, Chris Uba, had led the police to cause havoc during the exercise in the state.

“My colleague (Andy Uba) had already read Order 43; I don’t need to repeat it. I will like to commend the governor-elect of Ekiti State and my governor for accepting the result of the election. But I want to say here, Mr. President, that my colleague, who stood here to talk, his younger brother, Chris Uba, led police to the hotel and smashed all the doors of the hotel,” he alleged.

But he was interrupted by the PDP senators, who shouted at him to sit down.

Senators Philip Aduda and Senator Smart Adeyemi were among the senators that moved against Senator Ojudu.

However, the timely intervention of the deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the plenary, saved members of the lawmakers from exchanging physical blows when their tempers rose over the polls.

Intervening to calm the situation, Ekweremadu, who ordered Ojudu to read the Order 43, reminded him that the said order prohibits discussing any controversial issue in the chamber.

Consequently, he ruled Ojudu out of order.

He commended INEC for a “job well done”, and implored the commission to do better in the forthcoming 2015 general elections.

Reps Declare War on New CBN Boss, Set To Quiz Emeifele Over N35m Bureaux De Change ‎Capital Base

Teddy Oscar, Abuja

The House of Representatives on Thursday mandated its Committee on Banking and Currency to summon the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, to explain before the House the controversial directive to Bureaux De Change (BDC) operators to raise their operating capital base from N10 million to N35 million.

Subsequently, the House ordered the apex bank to immediately suspend the directive, pending the briefing.

The House, therefore, directed the CBN governor to appear before the Hon. Jones Onyeriri-led House Committee on Banking and Currency.

This was sequel to a motion moved by Hon. Ibrahim Shehu-Gusau, which attracted criticism from the lawmakers, who tagged the CBN directive a “policy somersault”, and called for a “systematic review”.

Leading debates on the motion, Shehu-Gusau stated: “Bureau De Change has provided millions of Nigerians job opportunities. I am worried that the new rule will send many BDC operators out of business. The increments are outrageous against the backdrop that the CBN will also reduce the amount of dollars being issued to BDCs from $50,000 to $15,000 per week.”

Also speaking, Hon. Asita Honourable tagged the CBN directive “super elitist and racist in nature”.

However, speaking in favour of the CBN directive, Hon. Victor Nwokolo likened the move to the 2005 bank recapitalisation.

He said increasing the operating capital base of BDCs will strengthen foreign exchange transactions.

You would recall that CBN had on June 22 released fresh guidelines for BDC operators to raise their operating capital base from N10 million to N35 million.

This, CBN said, is to check persistent depletion in the country’s external reserves and the financing of unauthorised transactions.

In addition, the apex bank stated that all BDCs applying for the new licence would be expected to make an application fee of N100,000; a licensing fee of N1 million and an annual renewal fee of N250,000.

The CBN further announced July 15 as deadline for the new capital base directive to come into force.

Ousted Board Chairman Floors Chime, Enugu State Government in Court…As Court Awards N10 Million Damages

MRS. ETHEL NEBO-EZEABASILI
An Enugu State High Court Presided over by Justice C.I Nwobodo has declared as illegal and unconstitutional the premature removal from office of the former Chairman of the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board, ENSUBEB, Mrs. Ethel Nebo-Ezeabasili in 2012.
In a ruling that lasted several hours, the Court also awarded a N10 Million damages and a N100,000 Naira cost against the Governor Sullivan Chime led Government for illegal and unconstitutional actions against the Mrs. Nebo-Ezeabasilli.
Mrs. Nebo-Ezeabasili had approached the State High Court in Enugu to declare her removal from office as illegal and unconstitutional and to award her damages over a trumped up allegation that she embezzled over N245 Million Naira belonging to the Enugu State Government.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Ethel Nebo-Ezeabasili who had fled the State over alleged attempts on her could not be reached to react to the judgment.
However, her lawyer Chief Tagbo Ike said he was happy that the attempt to tarnish the integrity and reputation his client had built over the years had failed. He described the judgment as a “triumph of justice over injustice and impunity”.
“This shows that evil and political tyranny will never prevail over truth, justice, and due process forever”, he stressed.
On his part, a civil society activist, Mr. Damian Okenwa described the judgment as victory for democracy.
He added: “The fact that the ruling was given by a courageous and Honourable Justice of the Enugu State High Court against a sitting government of the same State shows that the judiciary remains the last hope of the common man; and that all hope is not lost for this nation.
Mrs. Ifeoma Nwobodo Chief of Staff to Gov
Mrs. Ifeoma Nwobodo Chief of Staff to Gov
“The ruling is another food for thought for the State Government and a warning to retrace its steps. The poor woman might have lost the battle to prevent the Enugu State Government and the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mrs. Ifeoma Nwobodo from demolishing a whopping N3.6 Billion by awarding 583 projects to just three companies, but she has won the war by exposing to the world the manner of government we have in the State.”
He further stressed that the former ENSUBEB Chairman had also made a point to the effect that “a public servant who has integrity and courage can say no to corrupt orders from even at his or her own peril”.
It could be recalled that Mrs. Ethel Nebo-Ezeabasili was prematurely removed from office in 2012 following an alleged running battle between her and the Chief of Staff to Governor Sullivan Chime, Mrs. Ifeoma Nwobodo over the running of the State Universal Basic Education Board.
In an in-depth petition at the time to the Insector-General of Police entitled “Save my Soul: Threat to My Life, Harassment and Intimidation by Mrs. Ifeoma Nwobodo, Chief of Staff to the Governor of Enugu State” and dated February 13, 2013, Mrs. Nebo-Ezeabasili had alleged that the crux of the onslaught against her by Mrs. Ifeoma Nwobodo was her principled stand against irregularities in award of contract.
chime1chime1
She wrote: “By the Procurement Act, no contractor is expected to tender or be awarded more than one lot, but in this case the Committee approved only four companies to execute 583 projects, in spite of the fact that I told them that it was not politically expedient and did not follow Due Process”.
The former ENSUBEB Chairman also alleged that in addition to the N3.6 Billion and 583 projects being carried out by four companies, which was later reduced to three, Eremite Ltd was to roof all the school buildings, Intercolour Paints Ltd was to supply all the paintings, while the Chief of Staff and Mr. Cornelius Nnaji were to supply the furniture- school chairs- at the unit cost of N29,000.
“I pointed out to them that the approved unit cost by UBEC for the chairs was N8,000, but the Executive Secretary, Mr. Dan Onyishi was directed by the Chief of Staff to increase the budgetary allocation to the Ministry of Education to accommodate the increase and that will be an extra N21,000 (Twenty One Thousand Naira) per chair”, she alleged.

Ekiti Election process badly skewed in favour of PDP – APC

Communique issued at the end of the inaugural meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja on Thursday, June 26th 2014

It is no longer news that the governorship election in Ekiti State has been won and lost, and that our candidate, Gov. Kayode Fayemi, has shown rare sportsmanship by conceding defeat and congratulating the winner, Mr. Ayodele Fayose.

We are very proud of Gov. Fayemi for his conduct and comportment before, during and after the election, and we hail him as a true democrat in the true spirit of the APC’s belief that election is never a do or die affair, and that Nigerians must always be free to elect those to govern them. After all, it is said that the just powers of governments are derived from the consent of the governed.

Gentlemen, election is a process, and whatever happens on the voting day is only an integral part of that process. What happens before, during and after the voting day complete the process.

If, therefore, we view the just-concluded election in Ekiti as a process, then we can confidently say that while the events of the voting day itself may have led many to believe that the election was free and fair, the same cannot be said of the events before, during and after the election.

We therefore believe that we owe it a duty to the continuous improvement of our electoral system and indeed the sustainability of our democracy to X-ray this election within the context that we have outlined above and draw the necessary lessons

Incidents before election day

We believe that the events leading to the D-Day in Ekiti negate the principles of a free, fair and credible election. From the militarization of the election to the police attack on our supporters, arrest and detention of our leaders across the state and the use of huge funds to induce voters, the federal authorities skewed everything in favour of the PDP.

Militarization of the process:

With thousands of armed troops, police, state security and civil defence personnel deployed to Ekiti, the state was simply under a total lock down. While we believe that the police and the civil defence indeed have a role to play in providing the necessary security for the election, we do not see why soldiers who were armed to the teeth need to be deployed to a non-belligerent situation like an election, especially at a time that their services are more needed elsewhere to turn around a slow motion war that is daily claiming the lives of our compatriots. The questions to ask are: who ordered the deployments of the troops and for what purpose. Who gave the orders to stop Gov. Rotimi Amaechi from reaching Ado-Ekiti, as the Army captain who stopped and threatened to shoot him said he was acting under ”orders from above”.

It is worth mentioning that the physical prevention of Gov. Amaechi from joining his colleagues at the final campaign rally of Gov. Fayemi in Ekiti is a direct function of the unnecessary deployment of troops to Ekiti for the election. This event will go down as the biggest affront to democracy in our country in recent times.

Also worth mentioning is the flagrant abuse of national institutions that led to the country’s aviation authorities shutting down airports in Akure and elsewhere on the same day that our party had its last campaign rally in Ado-Ekiti. This act of impunity was targeted solely at the opposition, and it runs against global standards. Let’s we forget on the same day the helicopter ferrying Governir Adams Oshiomhole fro Benin Airport to Akure en route Ekiti for that finally rally was prevented from taking off. Airports are never shut without the issuance of a NOTAM –  Notice to Airmen. Again, who gave the orders for the closure of the airports?

While still on this, it was widely reported that two aircraft made a total of three flights to Akure Airport ferrying what is suspected to be raw cash for use in the Ekiti election. This was neither denied nor investigated, just like no one investigated the police attack on our peaceful supporters during a peaceful procession in Ado-Ekiti on June 8th that led to the death of one person; the teargassing of Gov. Fayemi when he intervened to save the situation; the interception of over 200 boxes of electoral materials by security agents in Ekiti and the busting, three days to the election, of a pro-Fayose and PDP gang in a resort owned by Fayose’s Campaign Manager while they were thumb printing ballot papers ahead ofSaturday’s election. The 22 young men, who were arrested, were also caught preparing INEC form EC8.

Incidents during Election Day

On the eve of the election and on election day, without any reason, security personnel  arrested APC leaders and supporters across Ekiti, ferrying them far away from where they could vote or monitor the conduct of the election. This is an attestation to the fact that the security operatives were in the state more for a sinister motive than just to provide security for the election.

In fact, the compromise by the security operatives became more obvious when a so-called Special Task Force comprising of Military, Police, SSS and NDLEA officers were summoned to a meeting Friday afternoon – a day before the election, near the Tantaliser fast food eatery at Ado-Ekiti.

In the presence of AIG Baka Nasarawa, Mrs Florence Ikhanone (National Director of SSS) and Brig.-Gen. Momoh, who was the head of the military to the election, Mr Ayo Fayose’s Chief Security Officer, Kayode Adeoye, and Chris Uba addressed the curiously-named Special Task Force which included 67 SSS operatives, 30 soldiers, 30 NDLEA operatives and 70 mobile policemen.

Adeoye and Uba reminded the officers of the Special Task Force of their duty to President Goodluck Jonathan, who was identified as their benefactor, and how the officers must ensure that their benefactor wins the election.

This was the same team that went round the state from Friday evening and throughout the duration of the election picking leaders of the APC from across the state in specially-designated black buses with Presidency plate numbers.

The case of the Campaign Manager of Gov. Fayemi, Mr. Bimbo Daramola, was particularly traumatic and saddening. His fiancee and aged father were harassed by armed soldiers who invaded his country home in the middle of the night, with guns being pointed at them as if they were common criminals. The Campaign Manager himself, an honourable member of the House of Representatives, was hounded into an unknown place by soldiers….all this because of an election!

Also on the receiving end of the brutality by security agents were accredited journalists, some of whom were ”deported”, so to say, to neighbouring Kwara State by paid agents of state who turned themselves to enforcers for the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The Mopol Commander who led the operation to ”deport” journalists from Ekiti is the same fellow who led policemen to attack harmless APC supporters who were holding a peaceful procession in Ado-Ekiti. This obviously poorly trained and unprofessional police officer, who was on a mission in Ekiti, acted with such impunity because he once served as the ADC to Goodluck Jonathan when he was a deputy governor in Bayelsa State, and felt he was not accountable to anyone.

Incidents during and after Election Day

While our leaders and supporters were being hounded and arrested across Ekiti during and after the voting, some PDP ministers and PDP stalwarts were  moving around freely, with armed escort, even with a restriction on movement in place. What business did these Ministers and their cohorts have in Ekiti during the election? What was their role in the election?

These are questions begging for answers.

Conclusion

At a press conference addressed by our Chairman on June 20th, we warned that our democracy was in clear and present danger from anti-democratic forces who are bent on winning elections, especially in the South-west, at all cost. Today, we restate that warning and call for a reversal of the incidents that made sure a level playing ground was not provided for all the candidates at the just concluded election in Ekiti.

While voting on Election Day may not having been characterized  by the usual brigandage and violence,  we submit that the entire process was everything but free and fair. If an integral part of the process was badly tainted as we have clearly and fully demonstrated above, then the entire process cannot but be tainted. Voting in Ekiti may have been free of the usual violence or manipulation at the collation centres, but the entire electoral process in the state was neither free, fair nor credible.

Therefore, in order to prevent a recurrence of what happened in Ekiti, especially the militarization of the process, the harassment and intimidation of citizens, especially those in opposition, my party has decided to challenge in court the role of the military in policing elections. We will also encourage our leaders and supporters, who were arrested, harassed and intimidated to seek the enforcement of their constitutionally-guaranteed fundamental rights that were recklessly abridged by the security agencies, especially soldiers.

In this regard, we commend the good people of Nigeria who have spoken out openly against this bare-faced acts of hooliganism by the very agents of state paid by taxpayers to prevent such acts.

Our decision to act is not only to ensure that these irresponsible and unconstitutional acts are not repeated in subsequent elections, especially that in Osun in August and next year’s general elections, but also because we have always said that evil thrives when good men do nothing!

Imo 2015 Poll:  Why Hon Emeka Ihedioha is the Best Foot of the PDP – By John Mgbe

The  task  of  marketing HON. Emeka  Ihedioha   to  the  Imo  State  electorate  is  a  very  easy  task  because it  is  a  classic case  of the maxim:”A good  wine  needs  no  bush”. As  a  political product, Hon  Emeka  Ihedioha  has  a powerful  unique  selling  proposition(USP) or  a  niche  which  makes   him  very  competitive to grab  a  giant  portion  of  market  share. In  choosing  the  best  candidate  for  the  PDP Governorship  ticket, I  worked  with  a  marking  scheme  which  makes  it  possible  for  every  aspirant  to  be  given a  free and  fair   chance  in  the   race. Some  of  the  factors  used  in  picking  the  best  candidate  include  academic  qualification,  top positions  held  in  the  political  arena, party  loyalty/ consistency, financial  empowerment  of  party, Integrity and  dependability, interpersonal  relationship, rule  of  law /due  process, records  of  carpet crossing, criminal  records and  others. Others include the constituency/empowerment   projects, records of Bills  and  contributions  in  Legislative deliberations(i.e.  for those who  are  legislators) and  others.

After  a  diligent   analysis  of  the   marking  scheme as  it  affects  the  individual  contestants, Hon  Emeka  Ihedioha  came  up  with  an  impressive  showing  which  overwhelmed  most  of  his  peers. The  Green-capped  legislator  has  an  impressive  academic  background  as  an  alumnus  of the  prestigious  University of  Lagos where  he  bagged  a  degree  in  Food  Technology. In  the  area  of  party loyalty  and  dependability, Hon  Emeka  Ihedioha   came  out  tops. Since  the  PDP  lost  the  governorship slot  in  2007 election,  Hon Emeka  Ihedioha  is  one  of  the few   PDP  members  who  have  provided  much  needed  funds  and  logistics  to  keep  the  party  alive today. Even as  we  speak  , he  remains  one  of  the  big  financiers  of  the  party. In  the  just  concluded  fund  raising of the  PDP in Imo  State,  he  was  the   highest  donor  with  a  whopping  sum of  N22million. He  must  have  spent  more  than  this  amount  in  financing  the  PDP  since  2007.In the  course  of  this  analysis,  a  cross section  of  the  PDP  members I  interviewed was  unanimous in  the  fact  that  Hon Emeka Ihedioha  has  been  providing   financial  assistance  to  bail  out  the  party  from  financial  distress since  the  last eight years. At  a  time  when  some  of  the  governorship  aspirants  abandoned  the  party  and   defected  to  other  political  parties  in  search  of  greener  pasture, the  like  of  Hon  Ihedioha and  several  others remained  loyal  to  the  PDP.In  keeping  with  the  maxim, “A patient  dog  eats  the  fattest  bone” those  who  remained  loyal  to  the  party  in  times  of  distress must  be  allowed  to  eat  the  good  of  the  party.

A short  while  ago, about  37 PDP  members  of  the  House  of  Representatives  and  some  others  from  the  Senate defected or  decamped  to the All Progressives  Congress(APC) , Hon Emeka  Emeka  Ihedioha  was  at  the  verge  of  losing  his  exalted  position  of Deputy  Speaker and No 6  in  the  order  of  Protocol in  Nigeria, if  he  did  not defect  to APC. In  spite  of  this  insuperable  odd,  Hon  Emeka  Ihedioha  shocked  most  of  us  when  he  called  a  press  briefing  to  emphasize  that  he  did  not  have  any  plans  to  abandon PDP.In  normal  and  saner  societies,  the  like  of  Emeka  Ihedioha who  have  remained  faithful to  PDP   would  simply  be  given  the  governorship  ticket  by  acclamation or the  right  of  first  choice. It  is  only  in  the  PDP that  prodigal  sons   who  return to  the  family  after  a  riotous   and  profligate  living insist  that  the loyal  siblings  must  bow  to  them. This  contrasts  sharply  with  what  happened  in  the  Bible  where  the  prodigal  son  remained  remorseful  and  penitent  .He  was  just  asking  his  father  to  allow  him  a  place  where  he  would have a  roof  over  his  head, provided  he  would  eat  the  crumbs  from  the  table. The  Biblical  Prodigal son  was  neither  proud  nor  arrogant ; he showed  remorse , humility and  penitence  and  did  not  ask  to  be  restored  to  his  order  of  seniority. Please read the “Parable of the Prodigal Son”(LUKE 15:11-32).Is  there  anybody  who  prays  that while  he  is  busy  baking  the  cake,  someone else  will  be  busy  eating  the  same  cake- a  case  of  “monkey  dey  work, baboon  dey  chop”?  Is  there  anybody  who  prays  that  this  near  success  syndrome  will  be  his  portion? Those who go to equity must do equity.

Law making, Representation and Oversight Functions:   These  are  the  major  functions  of  a   legislator. I  do  not  have  space  to  discuss  Hon  Emeka  Ihedioha’s  superlative  performance  under  this  heading. I  advise  his  office  to  put these  land  mark  feats  in  a video  cassette diskette  (VCD) and  donate  them  to  the  public so  that any    doubting  Thomas  can  feel  the  quality  of his representation in  the  past eleven years. But, I will try to scratch  the  surface.

He  was  first  elected  to  the  House  of  Representatives (HoR) in 2003 to  represent  Aboh Mbaise/Ngor-Okpala  Federal  Constituency  in  the  HoR. In  spite  of  the  fact  that  he  was  not  a  ranking  member,  he  served  as  the  Chairman, House  Committee on  Marine  Transport(2003-2007) and in  2007,he  served as Chairman House Committee on Cooperation and  Integration in Africa. He  was  elected  Chief  Whip  of  the  House  in November 2007 where he  served  till June 2011.On June 6th,2011,  he  was  unanimously  elected  Deputy  Speaker by  his  colleagues  in  the  House  of  Representatives. That  was  the  first  time  members  of  the  House of  Representatives(HoR) elected  their  own  principal  officers  without  any  manipulations  from   ASO ROCK or  from  the  PDP bigwigs. It  was  a  paradigm  shift  from  the  past  when   principal  officers  of  the  House  were  imposed  from  the  political  demagogs. On the  commencement  of  the   7th  House  of  Representatives,  legislators  were  vehement  on  resisting  any  imposition of  officers on  them. After  the election  of  the  presiding  officers,Hon Aminu  Tambuwal from  North West and  Hon  Emeka  Ihedioha from  South East were  elected  Speaker  and  Deputy  Speaker  respectively.  Hon. Tambuwal defeated  his  opponent, Hon. Mulikat  Akand-Adeola from  the  South  West by  252 votes  to 90  votes. In  the  same vein, Hon  Emeka  Ihedioha(OON) emerged  Deputy  Speaker  unopposed. The  courage  of   the members  of  the  Green Chamber  House  to  elect  her  principal  officers  without  any  external  intervention  was  applauded by right  thinking  members  of  the  society. It  would  have  been  foolhardy/ naive  for Hon  Ihedioha  to  reject  such  a  high  office  which  was  given  to  him  on  a  platter  of  gold. If  he  had  chickened  out,  right  thinking  members  of  Imo State  would  have denounced  him as  a  saboteur, a Fifth Columnist  in  the  family. However,  any  of  us  who  does  not  understand  what  happened  then  should  be given  a  small  lecture so  that  he  can be  carried  along.

His  Chairmanship  of  the  prestigious  House  Committee  on Marine  Transport,  even  when  he  was  a  green horn/neophyte  in  the  House  is  traceable  to  the  fact  that long  before  he  joined  the HoR in 2003,  he  was  already  versed  in  the  business of legislation  and  House  Rules. He  started  his  political  career  from  the  grass roots when  he  served  as  media aide  to  top  politicians  like Senate  President (1992-1993), DR. Iyorchia Ayu,  Senate  President(1999-2000) the Late Dr.  Chuba  Okadigbo,  the  former  Vice  President,(1999-2007), Alhaji  Atiku Abubakar and  others. Unlike  most  politicians who  have  no  personal  discipline  to  start  their  political  career  from  little  beginnings, Hon  Ihedioha  spent  over twelve  years  learning  the  ropes  as  lawmaker  and  aide  to  top politicians  before  aspiring  to  be  Governor. After  serving  twelve  years  in  the  Green  Chamber  and  rising   to the  position  of  Deputy  Speaker  and  No  6  person  in  the  Order  of  Protocol  in  Nigeria, I  doubt  if  there  can  be  a  better  choice  for   Imo  State  Governor in  the  next  political  dispensation. Having  acquitted  himself  creditably  in  the  Green  House,  the  only  place  to  go  is  the  RED  Chamber zone which  is  composed  of  the  Presidency, the  Senate  and  the Governorship. But he desires to start from the Governorship  as a  first  step  in  his  journey  to  the   RED  CHAMBERS. After all, it’s  often  said  that  the  reward  for  good  work  is  more  work. A  good  study  of  Emeka  Ihedioha’s  political  strides  reveals  that  he  is  a  man  that  has  a  date  with  history  in  the  political  ambience  in Nigeria.

CONSTITUENCY PROJECTS: Hon  Emeka  Ihedioha’s  feat  in  the  area  of  constituency projects  is  both  record  shattering  and  record  setting. Unfortunately, some of his  constituents  in Aboh Mbaise/Ngor-Okpala  Federal Constituency  are  oblivious of  what  they  have  in  Hon  Ihedioha.   I  come  from  a  senatorial  zone  where  a  particular  senator  served  for  over  12 years, but, today,  there  is  no  modicum  of  constituency  project (not  even a   one – room project) that  stands  as  a  memento  to  the   period  of  his  miserable and  pathetic reign  as  senator. This  contrasts  sharply  with  Hon  Ihedioha whose  constituency  projects  are  not  only  earmarked,  they  are  also  eyemarked   in his  immediate  Federal  Constituency  and  even  across  the  various  LGAs in  Imo  State. He  has  severally  explained  in  many  fora that  constituency  projects  of  National  Assembly  (NASS)  members are federal  projects  attracted   by  legislators but  funded  by  the  federal  government;  they  are  not funded  with the  individual  legislator’s money.

Empowerment  Programmes  for  Women  and  Youths: In  partnership  with  the  National  Directorate  of  Employment(NDE),he  organized  an “Empowerment of Imo Women and Youths    Skill Acquisition Training” for  500 beneficiaries  drawn  from  the  three zones  of  the  state. Each  of  the  beneficiaries  was  given  a  full  complement of start-up  kit  to  facilitate  effective  take-off .The  venue  was  Villa  Maria Complex  on  Wetheral  Road .Another  batch  of  trainees  had  their   own  empowerment  training  at Metallurgical  Training  Institute(MTI) Onitsha .The  beneficiaries  were  drawn  from  the  three  senatorial  zones  of  the  State. They  were  also  provided  with  a  full  complement  of  kits .Another  empowerment  programme  for  the  youths drawn  from  across  the  state  took  place  at  the  Entrepreneurial  Complex  of  Federal  University  of  Technology(FUTO),Owerri. In  the  same  vein, in  collaboration  with  the  National  Root Crop Research  Institute, Umudike, Umuahia in Abia  state, he  organized  a  three  day  intensive  programme for about  700  beneficiaries  from  the 305  Electoral  wards  of  the  state. The training   spanned the period Thursday Ist Saturday – 3rd of November,2012 at Alvan Ikoku College  of  Education, Owerri. There  are  several  of  such  empowerment   programmes for  the  Women  and  Youths  and  beneficiaries  were  drawn  from  the  27 Local  Government  Areas of  the  State. The Green-Cap  lawmaker  has  also  built  federal  Skills  acquisition  centres  in   some  communities  in  his  constituency. The list here is a  tip  of  the  iceberg.

Capital  Intensive  Constituency  Projects:Some  of  these  projects  include the construction  of Isinweke-Onicha-Uboma road  in Ihitte-Uboma  LGA in Okigwe  zone; it’s  an NDDC project. Although Imo  state  is  not  a  coastal  zone,  he  was  able  to  use  his  position  as  Chairman, House  Committee on Maritime  Transport  to build  Wharf/Jetty at Imo  River  Okpala . As at 2010 when  I  last   monitored  it, over  N500 million   had  been  spent  on  the  project. In  December, 2011, I was  one  of  the  pressmen  who  went  on a  facility   tour  of  his  constituency  to  verify  his  constituency  projects. I was overwhelmed at the  massive  projects  which  confronted  us.  Some  of  the  projects  include  the 132 KVA and33 KVA transformers installed  at  Mbutu  and  Nguru  communities. The  33KVA  substation  at  Mbutu was  commissioned  on  December  24th,2011  by  the  then  Minister  of Power, Professor Barth  Nnaji. According  to  the  Project  Engineer,  the  132 KVA  on  completion  would   supply  electricity to  more  than  50  communities and  decongest  the  Egbu sub – station. Through  the  Niger  Delta  Development  Commission(NDDC), he  facilitated  the project  for  the  dualization of  the  35km interstate Owerri-Elele road. The  Deputy  Speaker  has  assured   the  polity  that  adequate  funding  for  the  NDDC  project  will  be  achieved. Other  projects  include  the 17 KM Okpala- Igwurita road linking Imo  and  Rivers  State. Also  affected  is the Chokoneze-Mbutu-Logara road, Chokoneze-Ife Road and Chokoneze-Lorji-Amuzu road. The  rehabilitation  of Sam Mbakwe  International  Cargo  Airport,  construction  of Nigeria Immigration  Service  Centre at Aboh Mbaise  Council  Headquarters.

The  phase  one  of  the  MBAISE  Ring  road   was  flagged  off   in  May, 2013 .The  road which  is  estimated  to  cost   about  N6.2billion  will  cut  across 25  communities  in  the  three  Local  Government Areas  of  Mbaise  nation. When completed, the road will have   a length of 59 km. It is a project of the Ministry of Niger Delta. He  has  extended  his  constituency  projects  to  Radio Nigeria, Owerri  and  Nigerian  Television  Authority(NTA) where  he  donated  computer  sets, digital  recorders,  split  air conditioners and  even  staff  buses and  various  items  of  media  ware  to  enhance  their  performance. His  constituency  projects  on capital  intensive  projects  are  too  numerous  to  be  discussed  here.

Appointments  into Boards of MADs: Imo  State  has  over fifty  members  serving  in  various  capacities  in  federal Parastatals, Agencies and   Departments(MADs). Even  if  for  hypothetical  reasons , we accept  the  nebulous  accusation that  he  diverted   the  appointments  to his  federal  constituency, he  has  not  sinned. I also  would  have  done so if  I were  elected  to  represent  my  constituency. The  core  responsibility  of  a legislator  is  to   empower his  constituents  and  not  to  be  a  Father  Christmas  for  other  constituencies. This  allegation  from  top politicians  validates  my   claim  that  he   is highly  effective  as  he  is  on  top  of  his  job. A legislator  who  has  such  capacity  to  influence  federal  largesse to  the  grass roots  is the  ideal  governor  we  need  in 2015.This  feat  gives  him  a  head start  in  the  PDP Governorship primaries. However, the  truth  is  that  in  his  capacity  as  Deputy  Speaker, he  has  since  taken  the  entire  nation  as  his  constituency. In  Imo West zone(Orlu),  he  facilitated  the  appointment  of  Barrister  Nnamdi   Anyaehie, State  PDP  Chairman as   member, NYSC Board. Ditto for HON Goodluck Opia, Chief Elvis   Agukwe and  others . Hon  Onyeriri  from Orlu  zone  is  House  Chairman  of  the  powerful  Committee  on  Banking. Ditto  for   Imo North(Okigwe  zone) where  he   facilitated  the  appointment  of  the  like  of  MRS. Comfort  Chukwu as  Board  member. In  his  Mbaise  nation, my  research   shows  that  he  powered  the  appointment  of  the  like  of DR. Alex Obi, Chief Alex Emeziem, Hon Mike Iheanetu and  there  are  cogent  reasons  to  justify  each  case. Please Goggle and  read online  my  article  entitled “IMO 2015:HON. Emeka breaks  silence & bares  his  fangs”. It  can  also  be  read  on  page 10  of  the Nigerian  Horn newspaper  edition  of April 16-17, 2014. Those  who  accuse  Ihedioha  of  hijacking  all  the  federal  appointments  need  to  be  educated  that  Mbaise  nation  parades  a  crack  squad  of  rugged  politicians    most  of  who   can  fend  for  themselves  in  the  shark- infested  waters  of  Nigerian  political  ambience.

Hon  Emeka  Ihedioha  is  Chairman, House   Ad Hoc Committee on Constitution Review. On  the  18th April,2013,  he  received  a  tumultuous  applause from  Nigerians  when he presented the  collated results of  the  People’s  Public  Sessions(PPS)  on  the  review  of  the 1999 Constitution. The  PPS  itself  was  flagged  off in the HoR Abuja  on Thursday, November 8th,2012. The  actual  hearings  took  place  on  Saturday, November, 10th 2012 in  each  of  the  360  federal  constituencies  in  the  country.  That  was  the  first  time  the Green Chamber  in  Nigeria  was  handling  a  task  of  such magnitude. He  parades  an  intimidating  Curriculum  Vitae(CV) which  may  not  be  fully  listed  in  the small space  available. However, suffice  it  to  say  that  Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha was born in 1965 and hails from Mbutu, Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, South-East, Nigeria. He began his primary education at Town School, Mbutu in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, completed same at SDA Primary School, Abule Oja, Yaba Lagos in 1976. He then moved on to St. Ephraim’s Secondary School, Owerrinta in present day Abia State for his secondary education, rounding off his academic sojourn in Nigeria with a Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.) degree in Food Technology from the University of Lagos. This was in 1988. He has also since taken courses at Stanford University and Harvard University, respectively, both in the United States of America as well as Oxford University Business School and the University of British Columbia, Canada. Hon Emeka  Ihedioha’s  curriculum Vitae  is large  and  may  be  published  verbatim,  if  he  permits.

A man rooted in tradition and who understands the ways and nature of his people, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha is the recipient of several chieftaincy titles among which are The Omenka Ahuruanya of Mbaise; Ezeugo Nri; Odozi Obodo Ngor Okpala; Ezienyi Nguru; Ezienyi Uvuru; Ebubedike Agulu, Ebube Mba of Ngwaland; Odiuko Nnamba of Obinugwu-Orlu; Oke-Osisi Umuohiagu; and Aha Eji Agamba of Mbutu, etc.

Hon. Ihedioha
Hon. Ihedioha

A Knight of the Order of St. Christopher of the Anglican Communion, Ihedioha has bagged several religious awards in recognition of his contributions to the advancement of Christianity. These recognitions and honours point to a general acknowledgement of his community leadership position and religious piety.

On  the  strength  of  the  snippets  of  facts  listed  here, I am  convinced  that HON Emeka  Ihedioha  is  a  fit  and  proper  person  to  emerge  as  the  best  foot or  choice  of  the PDP  in  its  forthcoming  governorship  primaries. Ceteris Paribus, he  has  all it  takes  to  overwhelm  the  candidates  of  the  other  parties  in  the  Governorship  election  in February 2015. All in all, I  am  convinced  that  Hon  Emeka  Ihedioha  has  exhibited  a  stellar  performance  in  the  core  duties  of  a  legislator which  include law making, representation  and  oversight. His  performance  is  a  paradigm  shift  from  what we see  around  here since 1999.Aperson  with  such  a  strong  background  in  political  engineering   should  have  a  head  start  in  the  titanic  battle  for  Imo  Governor  in 2015.

Abuja Bomb Blast: Senate Urges FG To Increase Surveillance

Teddy Oscar, Abuja

The bomb blast that claimed scores of lives and left dozens of people with various degrees of injuries at the EMAB Shopping Mall at Wuse II in Abuja on Wednesday received a strong condemnation from the Senate on Thursday, who urged the Federal Government to increase surveillance in all parts of the federation.

This is even as the Senate President, David Mark, and Senate leader, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, also lent their voices to condemned the dastardly act.

Presiding over the plenary, deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who observed that security agencies had been doing good works to tackle the security challenges in the country, however, advised that efforts to get rid of the incessant attacks on Nigerians should redoubled.

While commiserating with the families of those that lost their loved ones in the blast, the Senate promised to work with the security agencies and the government to ensure that whatever that is needed to be done would be done to end the worrisome insurgency in Nigeria.

“We condemn in very strong terms the sustained attacks on Nigeria by the insurgents in various parts of the country. Of course, it is completely unacceptable. So, I will like to urge the government to increase their surveillance all over the place.

“And for the security agencies, we want to thank them for the good works they have been doing, but we believe that more could be done to secure this country. As a parliament, we are ready to work with the security agencies and the government to ensure that whatever needs to be done to end this insurgents will be done.

“So, on behalf of the senate once more I condole with the families of those who lost their dear ones yesterday and similar bombing last few weeks,” he said.

Ekweremadu enjoined Nigerians to stand firm and united in the fight against terrorism and insurgency.

“The sole motives of the terrorists were to break the spirit of Nigerians and instill fear through acts of mass murder and destruction of property. This is another sadistic act to annihilate Nigerians, spurn our religious and cultural values as well as all that we hold sacred as a people.

“It is a common saying amongst our people that nobody throws stone into the market square because even his or her kinfolks could be the victims; that these bands of terrorists even bomb market places warns us again that something is fundamentally wrong with their values and that we must all stand together to fight our common enemies,” he noted.

Ekweremadu condoled with the Daily Telegraph Newspaper family over the death of its managing editor (North), Mallam Suleiman Bisalla, who was killed in the unfortunate blast.

He described Bisalla as a “seasoned professional, who paid his dues towards national development.”

In a condolence letter to the board and management of the company, who noted that Bisalla covered the Senate diligently, described his death as a huge loss not only to the Nigerian media, but also the entire nation.
He observed that the void created by the journalist’s untimely death would be difficult to fill.

He sent heartfelt condolences to all those, who lost dear ones in the unfortunate incident. He also Prayed for the peaceful repose of the dead and quick recovery of the injured.

The duo Mark and Ndoma-Egba, in two separate statements, pleaded with perpetrators to sheathe their swords in the interest of peace and continual corporate existence of Nigeria.

Mark lamented the continued and unabated destruction of property, in spite of peaceful entreaties.

“Honestly, this is not our way of life. We are a people who value life. We cherish one another. This new trend of mass murder is alien to us. We must stand up against this and make Nigeria safe and better again.

“There are more than enough channels for any body or group of persons to seek redress including the law courts. Certainly, resort to killing, violence or destruction of property is not one of them,” he said.

He urged the security operatives not to be deterred by the development, but be strengthened to face the challenges of protecting lives and property in the land.

Mark also enjoined Nigerians to be security conscious at all times.

“The business of security is no longer the sole mandate of uniform men and women alone but all citizens,” he added.

On his part, Ndoma-Egba, who noted that the bombings have assumed frightening dimension, called on all Nigerians to be on the alert to foil any future attack.

He urged the nation’s security agencies not to relent in their collective efforts in securing lives and property, despite the unrelenting spate of attacks on innocent citizens by people he termed “enemies of Nigeria.”

Juxtaposing S/East And The Need For Regional Integration

The ebbing fortune in socio-economic sphere of our lives is a conspicuous pointer that the fundamentals of governance is largely dysfunctional. In this report, FRANCIS IGATA, writes on the imperatives of establishing a formidable regional bloc in the face of worrisome security challenges plaguing the country.

From the days of yore, Nigeria’s regional identity were notable for its dominance in the economic scheme our national life. The then Western region were renowned for its Cocoa production which accrued colossal fund to the center.

The North prided itself with its groundnut pyramid which served dual purpose of injecting both economic and tourism potentials to the country while the Eastern part played a pivotal role in the economy of the country with its humongous production of Palm Oil that were exported to other countries of the world at the time.

Casting a glance back will reveal a healthy competition among the three dominant  different regions with each moving tenaciously to outdo the other in terms of stamping its economic relevance above the others.

Today, these lofty enterprise is what we now reminiscent with a tinge of nostalgia. What now applies is that the regional structures has been jettisoned in the altar of state structures.

The states has turned a blind eye on areas of comparative advantage simply because they are sure of receiving allocation from the center monthly.

The foregoing backdrop has made it increasingly pertinent ever than before, for the re-enactment of regional template in our national life.

Current security challenges bedeviling the country has again, made a deafening sound on the need to nurture and foster regional integration.

The North-East region of the country where the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko-Haram is having a field day, serves a rude reminder of the missing element among the sister states in that geo-political zone.

What the states could have rose in unison to defy, is now their albatross, which, if not checked will leave the region in perpetual ruins, carcass and tatters.

Recently in the South-East, incidents of bomb scare, evacuation of Improvised Explosive Device,IED, planted at Winners Chapel, Owerri,Imo State, arrest of 486 suspected Boko-Haram members in Aba, Abia State and apprehension of 21 suspected Boko-Haram members in Amala, Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State are causes of serious concern which sent chills down the spines of the people in the region.

Although investigation into the incidents are still ongoing, there is a dire and compelling need ever than before, for the Governors from the region, to put on their thinking cap, work as a team to wade-off any of such tales from the region which has hitherto, been alien to the people.

Panic had gripped Enugu state on Wednesday,25th June, when 21 suspects believed to be members of Boko Haram traveling to Kano with several military uniform concealed inside a luxurious bus were intercepted by the National Task Force (NATFORCE) at Amala in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu.

It was gathered that the suspects left Aba, Abia state around 2pm for Kaduna and were intercepted at the wee hour of Wednesday morning at a boarder community in Enugu state leading to the northern parts of the country.

Investigations revealed that an army sergeant on special duty at Xerox Construction Company in Ohaofia,Abia State procured the military uniforms and employed the services of the suspects for onward delivery of the consignments to an army corporal in Kano for an undisclosed mission.

The army sergeant whose identity was not ascertained as at the time of going to press was said to have been on the illegal business for quite a while before luck ran out on them.

A competent police source while speaking with our correspondent said the luxurious bus which they were traveling with which belong to the Young Shall Grow Company was not fully loaded at Aba but stopped over in Enugu to pick other passengers who unknowingly mixed up with the dreaded Islamic sects to Kaduna.

The arrest of the 21 suspects at Obollo-Afor has reportedly sent shivers to residents of the area and the entire South-East that were still grappling with the insecurity in the nation.

But the Commissioner of Police, Adamu Abubakar while reacting to the arrest of the alleged arrest Boko Haram suspects said that full scale investigations will be carried out to authenticate the true mission of the 21 suspects.

“ I wouldn’t tell you we arrested people with arms or whatever but all that I know is that we have arrested some people and we did not say they are Boko Haram because people can speculate. For us we don’t speculate until we investigate and after the investigation, we come up with the facts. We have arrested some people from Obolloafor and the matter has just been transferred to us from Obolloafor, but we have not yet gone into the facts of the case, the moment we get details, we will call you back or do a press release. People should know what is happening”, he said

At about 11.30 am Wednesday, the suspects whose ages ranged between 20 and 35 years were brought to the state police headquarters by the luxury bus accompanied by full military and police security escorts.

Moments after they alighted from the luxury bus, they were led into the premises of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), apparently for questioning.

It would be recalled that few weeks ago, the NATFORCE had intercepted about 486 persons suspected to be members of the Boko Haram at Abia state, traveling in 33 buses.

It was followed shortly by the discovery of bombs planted at the premises of the Living Faith Church in Owerri, Imo state.

Meanwhile, the State Commissioner of Police has assured that his command would not rest on its oars in the fight against crime and criminality in the state.
