Businessman and social media personality Isaac Fayose has ignited fresh controversy within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) with claims that five sitting APC governors are secretly funding the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections — allegedly as part of a covert effort to block FCT Minister Nyesom Wike from delivering key victories for the party.
The Claim
In a video shared on his social media page over the weekend, Fayose — younger brother of former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose — claimed he was personally present at a meeting where the governors laid out their conditions for backing the opposition party. According to his account, the governors will not publicly campaign for the NDC or make any statements favoring the party, but have privately pledged financial support for its 2027 campaign.
Fayose said the governors’ central demand was simple: they don’t want Wike to win FCT for APC and don’t want him to win Rivers State for APC. He added that he told the governors directly that neither Wike nor the APC carries much popularity in Abuja, suggesting the governors saw little to lose by quietly hedging their bets.
Allegations of Vote-Rigging Concerns
Beyond the financial backing claim, Fayose alleged the arrangement was also designed as a check against electoral manipulation in APC’s favor. He claimed the unnamed governors are prepared to fund NDC agents to monitor and resist result manipulation at polling units in Rivers State and the FCT, and that their identities are being kept secret specifically to avoid backlash within the APC.
APC Governors Push Back
The APC Progressive Governors’ Forum, chaired by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, has firmly rejected the allegations, reaffirming its members’ loyalty to President Bola Tinubu and insisting the forum will not support any arrangement that could weaken the party’s chances in 2027.
Part of a Wider Pattern
Fayose’s claim lands amid an already tense standoff between Wike and APC governors over the minister’s cross-party “Rainbow Coalition,” which the PGF has rejected as a threat to party cohesion. Notably, Fayose’s allegation cuts in the opposite direction of that fight — rather than governors resisting Wike out of loyalty to the APC, he suggests some are working covertly against the party’s own electoral interests to specifically deny Wike a win.
His brother, Ayo Fayose — a PDP chieftain who, like Wike, serves in the Tinubu-led federal government — has taken a more measured public position on the broader dispute, arguing the Wike–APC governors feud is driven more by personal ego than any real threat to Tinubu’s re-election chances.
