NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi has again visited an internally displaced persons camp — this time in Mangu, Plateau State — reiterating a message he has repeated across multiple election cycles: that Nigeria as a whole remains displaced as long as any of its citizens are living in IDP camps.
The Visit
Obi visited the camp on September 9 after his delegation was prevented from reaching Yelwata, Benue State, the previous day, where he had planned to visit families affected by recent attacks. He described conditions in Mangu as “deeply disturbing,” citing reports of more than 45,000 people displaced and over 20 communities sacked by terrorists in the area, and said he visited a camp sheltering more than 500 displaced persons, offering support as a gesture of solidarity.

“As long as there is one displaced Nigerian, all Nigerians are displaced,” Obi said, adding that displaced citizens “must not become forgotten Nigerians” and calling on the government to secure affected communities and support residents in rebuilding their lives.
A Recurring Message
This is not new territory for Obi. He made a nearly identical argument as far back as December 2022, telling IDPs in Abagana, Benue State, that “as long as you remain in IDP camp, Nigeria is in IDP,” and again in July 2026 during a birthday visit to the same Mangu camp, where he donated 50 bags of rice and ₦5 million in cash. He has made comparable visits to camps in Wassa, FCT, and elsewhere across nearly every year since declaring his presidential ambitions.
The Contrast With Tinubu
Obi and his supporters have repeatedly contrasted his personal, recurring camp visits with the absence of similar visits by President Bola Tinubu, though 247ureports.com could not independently verify a specific running count of how many camps Obi has visited to date, nor confirm the exact phrasing attributed to him describing this as his “12th” camp visit. The Presidency has not, in current reporting, directly addressed claims that Tinubu has not personally visited an IDP camp during his tenure.
