ABUJA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for the integration of stock market trading and capital market education into the curriculum of Nigerian universities to foster early financial independence and drive national prosperity.
The President made the advocate during a meeting at the State House in Abuja, where he received the Board and Management of the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), led by NGX Chairman Dr. Umaru Kwairanga and Group Managing Director/CEO Temi Popoola.
Reflecting on the nation’s economic potential and the role of capital markets in wealth creation, President Tinubu emphasized the need to equip undergraduates with practical financial knowledge while easing their educational burden.
“If the stock market is doing well, then we are doing well. We can teach this in classrooms to our undergraduates. If they can be in the classroom without the harrowing feeling of how to pay and what to pay, then we can build a nation of success and prosperity,” President Tinubu stated.
During the briefing, the NGX leadership informed the President that the total market capitalization of listed equities on the Nigerian Exchange had expanded significantly under his administration’s economic reforms—rising from under ₦30 trillion in May 2023 to ₦160 trillion. NGX officials projected that ongoing and prospective listings could push the market capitalization further to ₦230 trillion by the end of the year.

Commending the Economic Management Team—including Central Bank Governor Olayemi Cardoso, Minister of Finance Wale Edun, Minister of Budget Atiku Bagudu, and FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji—President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to private sector-led growth, structural reforms, and capital market expansion.
