GURGAON — Police authorities in Gurgaon, Haryana State, India, have arrested two Nigerian nationals for allegedly defrauding a resident of Pataudi of ₹63,500 through an online romance scam involving a staged immigration emergency.
The police identified the suspects as Kelvin Ogbu and Kingsley Emeka Ojobo. Investigators disclosed that one of the suspects was already facing pending legal proceedings under India’s Foreigners Act for immigration violations.
According to police reports, the duo created a fictitious Facebook profile under the name “Kathlin” to establish contact with the victim. After building rapport, the suspects migrated communication to WhatsApp, using two separate phone numbers—one bearing a UK country code and another with an Indian code—to make the persona appear authentic and convincing.
The fraudsters subsequently concocted a fake immigration emergency, prompting the victim to transfer ₹63,500 under the pretext of clearance fees before the victim realized he had been swindled and reported the matter to law enforcement authorities.
Gurgaon police confirmed that both suspects are in custody as investigations continue to determine whether they operated a broader syndicate targeting internet users across the region.
