KANO — Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, personally supervised traffic compliance on Monday, spending over an hour at the busy Kofar Fanfo Junction to ensure motorists and road users strictly obey traffic light signals.
The exercise was detailed in an official press release issued on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, by the Director-General of Media and Publicity to the Governor, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
Accompanied by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), state commissioners, and senior government officials, Governor Yusuf engaged directly in monitoring vehicular traffic to restore discipline and order along major metropolitan roadways.
Stern Warning to Offending Motorists
Expressing strong dissatisfaction over widespread recklessness and non-compliance among road users, Governor Yusuf emphasized that multi-billion naira public traffic infrastructure cannot be left underutilized or ignored:
“Traffic offenders should be closely monitored and punished by the relevant authorities to ensure that the equipment is not relegated to merely a city decoration.”
— Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf
The Governor extended the compliance mandate across all road user categories, directing commercial drivers, private vehicle owners, tricycle (Keke NAPEP) operators, and pedestrians to adhere strictly to signal lights to protect lives and public property.
Overhaul and Repositioning of KAROTA
To guarantee sustained enforcement beyond his personal intervention, Governor Yusuf announced plans to institutionalize structural reforms within the Kano Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA):
- Professionalization: KAROTA will be restructured into a professional traffic management body centered strictly on road safety and smooth traffic flow.
- Enhanced Capacity: The state government will strengthen the agency’s operational capacity to enforce road regulations, monitor compliance, and curb traffic infractions statewide.
- Urban Order Infrastructure: The move aims to complement continuous state investments in road network modernizations, street lighting, and urban transport infrastructure.
