The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the release and safe return of Chief J. J. Ezeokafor, the Chairman of the Jezco Oil Groups and a Reverend Sister who were earlier abducted by armed criminals at Ifite-Awka.
The Command confirmed the development in a statement issued on Saturday, August 15, 2026, by its spokesperson, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, who noted that the two victims had regained their freedom and safely returned.
The development brings a major breakthrough in the abduction case, coming days after the reported disappearance of the 72-year-old businessman, who was abducted at Ifite-Awka, Awka, alongside the Reverend Sister.
Although the circumstances surrounding their release remained unclear as of the time of filing this report, the Police said it was taking necessary steps to establish how the victims regained their freedom and obtain information that could assist the ongoing investigation.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, the information being gathered from the victims is expected to assist investigators in identifying the perpetrators and establishing the circumstances surrounding the abduction.
Reacting, the new Commissioner of Police in the State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, psc, mnips, commended the safe return of the victims and directed an intensified intelligence-led operation and manhunt for those responsible for the abduction.
The Police said the ongoing operation involves the Police, Department of State Services (DSS), Military, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Agunechemba Security Operatives and other relevant security agencies.
The Command also appreciated members of the public for their support and cooperation, urging residents to remain vigilant and provide credible and timely information that could assist security agencies in tracking down the perpetrators.
