BAUCHI, NIGERIA — The Bauchi State Government and the academic community have been thrown into mourning following the death of Alhaji Yakubu Ibrahim Hamza, a former State Commissioner for Religious Affairs and sitting Special Adviser on Higher Education.
Alhaji Hamza passed away on Saturday, July 4, 2026, in Abuja following a protracted illness.
In accordance with Islamic rites, his remains were transported back to Bauchi, where a funeral prayer was held on Sunday at the prominent Bauchi Emir’s Palace, followed immediately by his interment. The funeral drew a large gathering of state officials, religious leaders, associates, and well-wishers who gathered to pay their final respects.
A Legacy of Public Service and Academic Oversight
The late elder statesman was a central figure in the administration of Governor Bala Mohammed. He initially served for approximately two years as the Commissioner for Religious Affairs during the Governor’s second tenure, where he was credited with fostering inter-faith harmony and strengthening the state’s moral infrastructure.
Following a minor cabinet reshuffle, Hamza was reassigned by the Governor to serve as the Special Adviser on Higher Education, a role he actively occupied until his demise. In this final assignment, he deployed his vast administrative background to drive policy reforms and oversee the growth of tertiary institutions across the state.

Governor Bala Mohammed Expresses Deep Sorrow
Reacting to the loss, Governor Bala Mohammed expressed profound grief on behalf of his family, the government, and the citizens of Bauchi State, describing the deceased as an exceptional educationist and an irreplaceable public servant.
In an official condolence statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Governor, Mukhtar Gidado, the Governor recalled Hamza’s unwavering commitment to the transformation of the state’s educational landscape, spanning back to the era of the old Bauchi State.
“Alhaji Yakubu Ibrahim Hamza was a distinguished public servant whose life was defined by integrity, humility, selfless service, and an unrelenting passion for the advancement of education,” Governor Mohammed stated. “He brought his vast experience, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to the development of the education sector, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations.”
The Governor further lamented the timing of his passing, noting that his wise counsel and deep institutional knowledge greatly enriched the state’s executive policies.
“Alhaji Yakubu Ibrahim Hamza was a committed patriot, a respected educationist, a mentor to many, and a bridge-builder whose contributions to the educational and moral development of our society will remain indelible. His death is a painful loss not only to his immediate family but also to the Government and people of Bauchi State and the nation at large,” the statement added.
Prayers for the Bereaved
The state government has extended its heartfelt condolences to the immediate family, friends, and professional associates of the late elder statesman.
Governor Mohammed prayed that Almighty Allah (SWT), in His infinite mercy, would forgive the shortcomings of the deceased, comfort the bereaved family with the fortitude to bear the monumental loss, and grant his soul eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus (the highest paradise).
