BAUCHI — Nine persons have been confirmed dead after being burnt beyond recognition in a multiple vehicle crash near Zangoro village along the Bauchi–Maiduguri Federal Highway in Bauchi State.
The fatal accident occurred on Monday night, August 3, 2026, around 11:20 p.m.. According to the First Information Report released by the RS12.1 Bauchi Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), rescue operations were immediately dispatched to the scene, arriving within 15 minutes of receiving the distress call.
The crash involved two commercial vehicles: a Toyota bus carrying passengers and an unregistered MAN diesel tipper truck loaded with sand. A total of 17 adult males were involved in the collision. Nine of the occupants died on the spot after the vehicles burst into flames, while eight others survived with varying degrees of severe injuries.
Preliminary investigations by the FRSC identified a high-speed tire burst as the primary cause of the collision, which led to a sudden loss of vehicle control before impact.
Emergency responders evacuated the injured survivors to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi for urgent medical care, while the charred remains of the deceased victims were deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.
The damaged vehicles and items recovered from the crash scene have been handed over to the Motor Traffic Division of the Bauchi State Police Command for further investigative procedures.
