KATSINA, NIGERIA — A Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Katsina has ordered that Dr. Bashir Kurfi, a prominent university lecturer and public affairs commentator, be remanded in police custody over explosive public allegations that the state government sponsored notorious bandit leaders to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj pilgrimage.

The order was handed down on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, by Chief Magistrate Zaharaddeen Kofar Soro, following Kurfi’s formal arraignment by the Katsina State Police Command.

The TV Interview That Triggered The Arrest

Dr. Kurfi, a lecturer at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, and Convener of the Katsina Community Security Initiative, was arrested after granting a controversial live interview to Trust Television on June 24, 2026.

During the broadcast, the security analyst heavily criticized past amnesty programs and peace deals with armed groups in the Northwest. He alleged that the Katsina State Government spent roughly ₦10 million per person to sponsor active terrorist kingpins for the holy pilgrimage, claiming that such actions only subsidized and emboldened banditry.

The state police subsequently dragged the academic to court under a two-count charge bordering on defamation of character and the promotion of injurious falsehood under Sections 308 and 309(1) of the Penal Code Law of Katsina State.

The prosecution argued that the lecturer published the information fully knowing it was false, malicious, and explicitly designed to destroy the image and reputation of the state government.

Defendant Pleads Not Guilty As Bail Is Denied

When the charges contained in the First Information Report (FIR) were read aloud in the courtroom, Dr. Kurfi firmly pleaded not guilty.

The defense counsel, A.D. Umar, strongly opposed the detention request, pleading with the magistrate to grant his client bail on liberal terms, arguing that a citizen is constitutionally presumed innocent and entitled to his freedom while facing trial. However, Chief Magistrate Kofar Soro denied the application and ordered that Kurfi remain in police cells until the next adjourned date.

The Federal Connection: DSS Arrests at the Airport

The political fallout of Kurfi’s broadcast remains highly sensitive. While the Katsina State Government, through the Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs, flatly dismissed Kurfi’s claims as “baseless, unfounded, and politically motivated,” subsequent events at the federal level have intensified public scrutiny.

Just days after Kurfi’s television appearance, Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, officially announced that operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) had intercepted and arrested several notorious bandit leaders at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina as they returned from the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

While the defense team expresses absolute confidence that the academic will be entirely vindicated when the trial resumes on Monday, July 14, 2026, civil rights groups are monitoring the case as a potential attempt to intimidate whistleblowers raising alarms over northern security failures.
