ILORIN, KWARA STATE — Deep mourning has hit the Omugo community in the Oro Ago district of Ifelodun Local Government Area, Kwara State, following reports that five abducted Christian worshippers, including the wife of an Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) pastor, have died in captivity.
The tragedy comes after the minister-in-charge, Pastor Sunday Timothy Omole, exhausted his savings to deliver a multi-million Naira ransom package, only for the terrorists to breach the agreement and demand an additional ₦300 million.
The Pulpit Invasion and Initial Release
The crisis began during a Sunday morning service on March 22, 2026, when heavily armed terrorists stormed the ECWA church building in Omugo. The attackers disrupted the sermon, rounded up the congregation, and forcefully marched eleven worshippers into the dense forest, including the pastor’s wife, who was reportedly battling an illness at the time [5 Jun 2026].
After a few days in the wilderness, the abductors released two elderly victims and a single child, reportedly because they were slowing down the gang’s movement across rugged terrain.
The Broken Ransom Pact
The kidnappers initially contacted Pastor Omole to demand a staggering ₦1 billion ransom. Following frantic negotiations, the gang agreed to lower their financial demand in exchange for critical logistical provisions.
According to community sources, the pastor was ordered to deliver:
- Cash: ₦20 million in physical currency.
- Foodstuffs: Five bags of rice, one keg of palm oil, and a carton of seasoning cubes.
- Logistics: Four 30-litre kegs of petrol to fuel the gang’s operational motorcycles.
- Narcotics: ₦40,000 worth of hard drugs.
Pastor Omole successfully dropped off all the requested items at a designated forest boundary. On the day of the delivery, the minister reported hearing his wife’s voice from a distance, giving the family hope that the remaining captives would be released immediately. However, the gang pocketed the supplies and vanished back into the bush, issuing a fresh demand for ₦300 million.
The Escapee’s Grim Revelation
The true horror of the situation was revealed a few days ago when one of the remaining hostages successfully escaped the enclave and tracked his way back to the Omugo community.
The emaciated survivor informed distraught residents and church leaders that five of the hostages, including the pastor’s sick wife, had already died under harsh weather conditions, starvation, and a lack of medical care in the forest.
This tragic outcome mirrors the ongoing national safety crisis, where bandits holding school children in Oyo State have introduced ideological demands for Sharia law, and armed herdsmen have captured ancestral lands between Ado and Okpokwu LGAs. Despite online terrorists openly flaunting ransom proceeds on TikTok, local communities continue to face the brunt of state-level security failures. The Kwara State Police Command has deployed tactical anti-kidnapping squads to track the remnants of the Oro Ago syndicate, while the ECWA leadership has called for intense prayers for the survival of the remaining hostages.
