KANO, NIGERIA — The political landscape of Kano State has been thrown into complete turmoil following a direct warning from the former Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who has told the incumbent administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to start packing its bags to vacate the Government House.
The aggressive declaration marks a total breakdown in regional alignments following a high-stakes legislative shakeup that saw Gwarzo impeached from his executive position shortly after Governor Yusuf dumped the opposition platform to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Impeachment Fallout and Executive Defection
The fierce battle for the control of the ancient commercial city reached a climax after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf executed a controversial political shift, abandoning the structures that brought him to power to form a new alliance with the APC center.
The move triggered immediate institutional retaliation within the state assembly, resulting in the swift impeachment of Gwarzo, who refused to abandon his original political base. Now operating from the outside, the former deputy governor has launched an aggressive counter-campaign, asserting that the current administration has lost its democratic legitimacy and will be soundly evicted by the Kano electorate in the upcoming polls.
“They should start packing their things to leave office,” Gwarzo stated during a highly volatile strategy session with grassroot loyalists. “A government built on political betrayal and backdoor defections cannot sustain its hold on Kano State. The people are waiting to reclaim their mandate.”
The Senatorial Battle: Gamuwa Set to Clash with Shekarau
The political warfare has simultaneously spilled into the legislative arena, setting up an explosive senatorial contest in the state. Reports from party secretariats confirm that top political strategist Alhaji Ahmed Gamuwa has been slated to battle his former boss, the veteran politician and former Kano Governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, for the coveted red chamber seat.
The upcoming contest adds another layer of complexity to the region’s structural splits:
- The Former Alliance: Gamuwa previously served as a key lieutenant within Shekarau’s highly disciplined political vanguard, giving him intimate knowledge of the elder statesman’s mobilization tactics and regional structures.
- The Structural Split: Backed by the newly realigned state apparatus, Gamuwa’s entry into the race is a direct attempt by establishment forces to permanently retire Shekarau from active legislative politics.
National Gridlocks and Electoral Vulnerabilities
This local power struggle in Kano erupts at a time when the entire country is dealing with widespread political and institutional instability. Public trust has cratered following INEC’s rigid enforcement of the May 30 statutory deadline, which voided late-stage primary elections and threw opposition groups like the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) into absolute legal disarray amid blistering criticisms from experts like Dr. Sam Amadi.
Simultaneously, the foundational safety of the country is fracturing. Armed Fulani herdsmen have captured vital forest blocks across the Middle Belt, boldly renaming territories between Ado and Okpokwu LGAs as “Sambisa Forest,” while satellite communities just outside Abuja are facing a violent resurgence of mass kidnappings by Fulani terrorists.
With FCT Minister Nyesom Wike facing intense public ridicule for backing down on his street grazing bans out of fear of regional backlash, political analysts warn that Kano’s elite are focusing their energies on toxic internal rivalries while the basic security and economic survival of ordinary citizens is left completely unaddressed.
