KANO, NIGERIA — Ahead of the crucial 2027 general elections, political realignments have taken a strategic turn as the National Leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Presidential candidate, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, led the party’s Kano governorship candidate, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, to a closed-door meeting with former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.
The high-profile consultation took place in the “wee hours” of Thursday in Kano, at an undisclosed accommodation arranged for the former President by Kwankwaso.
Midnight Calculus Over 2027 Polls
While former President Obasanjo was officially in the ancient city to attend the turbanning ceremony of prominent legal practitioner and Kwankwaso’s key political ally, Barrister Abubakar Mahmoud, at the palace of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, the visit quickly doubled as a platform for heavy political consultations.
Confirming the development on Saturday morning, the Spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Dr. Habibu Saleh Mohammed, stated that discussions between the statesmen centered around national affairs and the upcoming 2027 electoral cycle.

“Yes, our leader, His Excellency, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, led the governorship candidate of the NDC in Kano, His Excellency, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, to former President Olusegun Obasanjo here in Kano,” Mohammed confirmed.
“The two leaders are very close. Senator Kwankwaso served as Defence Minister when Obasanjo was President, and also as Governor of Kano State during his tenure. So, it is not news if they discussed issues concerning the 2027 election cycle.”
Kwankwaso Validates High-Level Huddle
Senator Kwankwaso further solidified the report via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday, sharing details of the midnight courtesy visit.
“Last night, I paid a courtesy visit to our esteemed leader, His Excellency Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, at his accommodation in Kano. I was accompanied by the former Deputy Governor and our gubernatorial candidate, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo,” Kwankwaso stated.
Significance of the NDC Hustle in Kano
The meeting comes at a critical time when the newly aligned Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC)—which now houses the alliance between Kwankwaso’s Kwankwasiyya structure and Peter Obi’s political base—is aggressively consolidating its footprints. By introducing Gwarzo directly to Obasanjo, Kwankwaso is signaling the NDC’s readiness to mount a formidable challenge for the Kano Government House and the presidency in 2027.
Given Obasanjo’s historical influence as a kingmaker in Nigerian politics and his knack for backing strong opposition coalitions, political analysts believe this late-night meeting could be the beginning of a broader endorsement strategy for the NDC ticket.
