KANO, Nigeria — Former Kano State Deputy Governor, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, has strongly dismissed circulating reports that he plans to dump the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), labeling the rumors as entirely false and malicious.
Speaking out after intense political speculation, Gawuna explicitly cautioned opposition forces against dragging him into what he described as their “political oblivion.” He reaffirmed his unalloyed loyalty to the NDC and the Kwankwasiyya Movement, led by former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
The Rumour Mill and the ADC Offer
The denial follows an exclusive exposé indicating that national leadership forces within the ADC—reportedly spearheaded by prominent northern politicians—were aggressively wooing Gawuna with an automatic 2027 Kano State gubernatorial ticket alongside substantial campaign funding.
The move was widely seen as an attempt by the ADC to capitalize on a perceived rift after Kwankwaso formally announced Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo as the NDC’s consensus governorship flagbearer.
Unshaken Loyalty to Kwankwasiyya
Despite missing out on the top executive ticket, insiders confirm that Gawuna is fully aligned with the NDC’s internal power-sharing arrangement. Under the party’s current framework, Gawuna accepted the ticket to contest the critical Kano Central Senatorial District seat, aiming to secure a legislative stronghold for the coalition.
“I remain fully committed to the ideals of the NDC and the leadership of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso,” Gawuna’s camp stated, urging the general public to completely disregard the defection claims as desperate propaganda.
A Volatile Kano Landscape
The fast-paced political realignment comes on the heels of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s shock defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), leaving the opposition coalition determined to project absolute solidarity. Observers note that by swiftly killing the ADC rumors, Gawuna effectively seals any gaps that opposition parties hoped to exploit ahead of the highly anticipated 2027 general elections.
