KADUNA, NIGERIA — The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has rejected attempts by Peter Obi and Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to join the party, citing their demand for an automatic 2027 presidential ticket, according to the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed.
Speaking on DITV Kaduna, Baba-Ahmed revealed that while both politicians sought a platform for the next general election, they insisted on securing the standard-bearer slot without participating in internal primary elections, which the PRP leadership refused, citing its commitment to democratic processes.
“We told them no, this is the PRP; we do not practice that kind of politics,” Baba-Ahmed noted, adding that the party insisted on formal registration before contesting any position. He further questioned why the leaders feared competition within the party’s democratic framework.
Beyond the ticket issue, discussions stalled over requests for key party leadership positions based on their proposed support base. Despite the collapse of the negotiations, Baba-Ahmed noted the discussions ended peacefully.
This development highlights the ongoing challenges of building a united opposition coalition to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
