ABUJA, NIGERIA — Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi arrived at the national secretariat of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Abuja on Tuesday evening.

His arrival marks the commencement of his official screening exercise as the party’s sole presidential aspirant for the 2027 general election.

The Screening Exercise

The screening is a mandatory constitutional requirement by the NDC to verify the credentials, eligibility, and party standing of its aspirants. Obi arrived at the secretariat accompanied by key political aides and loyalists.

He was received by members of the NDC Presidential Screening Committee, headed by senior party stakeholders tasked with evaluating the submission of his Expression of Interest and Nomination forms.

Consensus Candidacy

Obi’s appearance at the party headquarters follows the official closure of the NDC presidential portal on Sunday. He emerged as the consensus candidate after no other aspirant purchased forms to challenge him for the top ticket.

Party insiders state that the successful completion of tonight’s screening will clear the path for his formal ratification at the upcoming NDC national convention.

Political Strategy

The NDC has strategically positioned itself as a major third-force coalition to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027. By zoning its presidential ticket to the south for a single-term agenda, the party consolidated its structure around Obi following his exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Supporters outside the secretariat cheered his arrival, viewing the screening as the first official step of his renewed presidential bid.
