ABUJA — In a move that has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s political establishment, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has officially declared his readiness to run as the Vice-Presidential candidate to Peter Obi in the 2027 general elections.
The former Governor of Kano State made the disclosure during a Monday night appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time, confirming that he is prepared to set aside his own presidential aspirations for the sake of a unified opposition under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
A Strategic Sacrifice
The announcement marks a historic reversal from the 2023 cycle, where failed merger talks between the two leaders were blamed on a deadlock over who would lead the ticket. This time, Kwankwaso stated he would be “glad” to work beneath the former Anambra Governor if the NDC formalizes the pairing.
“We have already reached an understanding on the core issues,” Kwankwaso revealed during the interview. “My brother, Peter Obi, and I are committed to a joint front to confront the security challenges and economic instability that have pushed our country to the brink.”
The 2031 ‘Zoning’ Pact
The merger is underpinned by a strict internal power-sharing agreement designed to satisfy both Southern and Northern interests. Under the NDC’s current framework, the party has zoned the 2027 presidency to the South for a single four-year term.
This “One-Term Pact” is intended to facilitate a transition in 2031, at which point the ticket would flip, allowing the North—and presumably Kwankwaso—to take the lead.
Kwankwasiyya Loyalty
Crucially, the influential Kwankwasiyya movement has signaled its total support for the arrangement. Sources within the red-capped movement confirmed they have accepted the zoning formula, viewing it as a pragmatic long-term strategy to ensure the North returns to the presidency in 2031 while removing the incumbent APC administration in 2027.
The Third Force Solidifies
With the “OK Movement” (Obi-Kwankwaso) now moving from a theoretical alliance to a practical reality, the political map for 2027 has been dramatically redrawn. By uniting the “Obidient” youth base of the South with the disciplined “Kwankwasiyya” voting bloc of the North, the NDC has positioned itself as the primary challenger to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
“The goal is simple,” a high-ranking NDC official stated following the broadcast. “We are putting Nigeria first, ego second.”
